Apple iPod Touch Wirelessly

Hello from Ron using an iPod Touch wirelessly.
Am I to become an Apple geek?

Happy 4th!

Cool! I can't wait to get one....
I love it! We are all addicted! I used my iphone to check the site while we were driving to Ohio a couple weekends ago!! :P
I found it sooo hard to do much with that small screen, don't you?

It was fun until I tried to post that message, then tried to correct a typo. My goodness, I couldn't navigate around in the text box.

I hadn't capitalized the "H" in Happy, so I tried to delete the lower case h and couldn't seem to get the cursor to the right of it except at the end of a word so I went to the beginning of the line, entered a capital H then went to the end of the word and deleted back to the new H and retyped "appy".

Phew! I must have been doing it wrong... there MUST be an easier way!

I am sure there is. Just stop and ask a kid on the street, I'm sure they know all the "ins and outs" and shorcuts. You will get used to the small screen after awhile. Good luck with your new toy!
Ron I think you are right.... It IS difficult to do things on that small screen. I have better luck just looking at things and not relpying at that time.
Hey WAIT A SECOND!!!

It's not mine, I'm still a PC-ONLY kind of guy. I was just playin'.

It's the free iPod Touch that came with the MacBook I was forced to purchase for my niece for her graduation gift. I tried (gently) telling her that she could have a state-of-the-art PC with a Blu-ray drive and twice the memory and twice the hard disk and a much larger screen and the "Sunshine Yellow" that she wanted... but nope. It's kewl to have a Mac.

BTW I thought it kind of looked like the iPhone, and then my brother said it was the same as an iPhone and he bets it could be modified to be an iPhone... then when they plugged it into the MacBook, a screen came up and said something like "there was no SIM card in the iPhone you are trying to activate!" LOL

I dunno, if the new iPhone that is debuting in a couple of weeks does a good job with GPS navigation (car) and all that stuff, I might be convinced to give it a whirl, but I'd have to give up my membership in the 12-installation-step AHA (Apple Haters Anonymous.)

[Ron, in front of an AHA meeting]: "Hi, my name is Ron and I Hate Apple,"
[Audience in unison]: "Hi Ron"
[Ron]: " but I just bought an iPhone."
[Audience, stunned, in unison]: "*GASP*"
the new iPhone that is coming out isn't getting great reviews. But the one that is currently on the market has a wonderful GPS that we've used several times to get ourselves un-lost from strange new places!

And there is a fix to make the iTouch into a phone; a friend of mine did it. It involves one of those free internet phone services. Since you can make you rcomputer into a phone with those sort of providers, and iTouch can be made to do the same thing.

I haven't heard or read anything but reviews touting the improvements of the GPS feature (no more triangulation!) in the new iPhone, not to mention an awful lot of "fixes" to its predecessor's issues. What have you read that is negative? (Not counting reviews from anti-Apple people!)
on one hand; there are a few articles about the lack of programs that will be made available; or maybe I should say lack of applications. Alot of companies simply don't want to create tech to run on the ipod, as they see no benefit to thier own companies in doing so. Forbes summed it up here:

I also read this little blurb; not earth shaking, but it is informative:

Unfortunately, we hoped for an even larger bundle of features in this round. Apple still leaves multimedia messaging out of the mix along with voice dialing and video recording. We still don't understand why Apple can't include these basic features, many found in even the cheapest and simplest cell phones. We were also hoping for a landscape keyboard, the capability to cut and paste, Flash support for the Safari Web browser, expanded memory, and additional Bluetooth profiles. Apple, you left us hanging in a big way. It's also disappointing to hear that the dock is now sold separately for $49, but we suppose that helped cut the price. No, you don't need the dock, but it's nice to have. Even the power adapter and the SIM card removal tool that now come in the box won't make up for its loss."

Adam loves his iPhone, and I was considering buying the old model rather than the new one. But I'm undecided, to be honest.
I guess I still don't get why you would want the old model over the new one except for being able to buy it cheap used? They didn't take away any applications, they just didn't branch out and add a lot more. There are definitely more improvements than setbacks, I think. I've been waiting for a long time for the next gen to come out before I considered one so I'm counting down the days until my current contract is up!

The new Verizon contract now prorates the early termination fee :D :D :D so all you're losing is the "value" they gave you for your new every two deal or whatever price incentive you got for your current phone. Well, at least here in Massachusetts. I don't know if it's the same everywhere.

That may not apply to old contracts, but it does with my new one! :D

EDIT: A Quick Google finds that this may be in place for all the old contracts, and maybe not just Verizon.

That's good info, Ron, thanks. I didn't know that. Right now, I actually only have about 3 weeks left in my contract so I really don't mind riding it out.
Just had to share-- I finally got my iPhone and it's awesome. It's pretty much the best thing to happen to me this year, maybe even my life. There are so many good apps for it! I'm really loving one lately that shows you all the traffic cameras on the freeways so we know which way will be backed up and can plan accordingly.

The keyboard took about two days to get used to but now it's perfect. I find the zooming really good and makes everything really easy to read. A lot of popular web sites even make mobile versions for the iPhone, too so that makes it even better.

Ooh, brainstorm! Ron, will you make me an oes.org iPhone app? If you could, my life would be complete. And who knows how many others...
What kind of app would you need?

I don't understand this app thing. ;)
Ha! It's an addictive little thing isn't it? My Ipod touch sits and does nothing far too much, I just haven't had time to really play with it and check things out, but so far I still love it. Because it's not a phone I can access everything for free, no data plan or anything necessary, just access whatever available wireless networks are available, and they are everywhere.
The audio and video quality are amazing, and it's so FAST!!

My only complaint is short battery life....
I haven't really found battery life to be an issue-- even with talking on it a lot. Since it's my phone and it's always with me, I just plug it in in the morning at work to sync and let it charge from there.

I'll tell you though, nothing beats that 3G network when you're in the middle of the highway and you're thinking about where you can find a place to eat or if you need to worry about traffic on the way. It's a great thing when you're on the move so you don't have to jump wireless networks. I find the 3g to be plenty fast and I have an unlimited data plan so I usually just use it. For the unlimited data and a text messaging plan, I'm only paying $25 more a month than I was for my old crappy phone that I hated and it's well worth it!

I gave my daughter one in May - it was stolen out of her car three weeks ago :(
