We think there is one more, maybe more than that...Panda is still pushing!

As for the stillborn one, Stacey didn't even let me see her
how long did she work on her? I've worked on them for 30 minutes and then had them come around...
I'm so sorry..... any reason?? Did you have dopram or brandy handy? (for the whelp not you). Try the pin in the nose?
Was she stuck for some time after placenta detached?
Sorry for the questions.............

Yes, so soory you had to euthanize the little cleft palate puppy but Know you did the RIGHT thing eventually .......... hey ae so sweet but it is just the best thing to be done...........

Glad to know the rest are all healthy........ were all 3 girls cleft?? forgot what you told me.
Hows everyone doing today?

I'm sorry to hear about the cleft pup or pups. :(
If any of the cleft pups are still with you, this information might be helpful...

Anne was very helpful to both the breeder and me when Kaytee was born.

Many people opt for corrective surgery... sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Kaytee is a cleft pup that did not have surgery to correct the defect. The rule is dry food and water for life... Kaytee's defect allows her to eat other things and she's never had a URI to date but it is not a full mid-line cleft. If she gets wet food, we give it to her off a spoon that's flipped outside down. This isn't an option if it's a full mid-line cleft.

For some pups, the defect is too severe and euthanasia is kindest. Others will thrive. Their weight is much less than littermates because they must be tube fed for the first 4 weeks or until they reach about 2 pounds. http://oesusa.com/Kaytee/Kaytee.jpg In fact, the specialist that evaluated Kaytee told my husband and I she would only live about 6 weeks because he feared she had liver shunts... she was too small to test. We chose to adopt her anyway. Preventative meds are used while the pup is tub fed to help prevent inhalation pneumonia. They're then put on a tiny dry kibble and water at around 4 weeks/2 pounds. The water helps to clean out the opening in the roof of the mouth.

Just info in case there are other special pups.
Jaci, adopting a special pup goes beyond a thank you. You're top notch!

Special needs adults and children have given me more than I could ever repay. I'm sure your pup has made a special impact in your lives.

I agree that euthanizing is the best answer in some cases. And, at times, a few of us are humbled by having a special one in our lives.
Elissa explained that the cleft palate puppies had all passed away.
I'm very sorry, Stacey.

So you've been touched too, Dee :) Special pups are just as easy to
love... there comes a time when you forget they're any different. You just
get so used to them being the way they are and making small
adjustments in the way you do things.

The other day Kaytee had come back to bed with us and she was doing
this nose-in-the-air-licking thing. It doesn't happen very often but I knew
she had something stuck. She had blueberries with her breakfast and had
a big honkin' one stuck in her snozzle. Popped it out, she ate it and we
went back to bed

I keep checking for new pictures of Panda's pups. We'll all be excited to
follow them over the next several weeks.

That is what I heard, not 100% sure on this.
Stacey, I am very sorry. :ghug:
Yes unfortunately there were two with cleft palates, one was stillborn, the other was born alive but was not thriving. After a trip to the vet we agreed it was kinder to euthanize. I had hoped to keep her alive, even though every breeder told me not to bother.... if she had shown signs that she could thrive I would have done what I could. However, I feel if too much intervention is needed sometimes it's just not meant to be, and not fair to make them suffer.
Stacey, I'm so sorry and sometimes it is very hard to be so kind. :ghug:
:ghug:
There are varying degrees of cleft palates... I'm certain you did the kindest thing. I applaud you for trying to save her!! Even Kaytee's doctors didn't have the same view on the extent of her birth defect. One thought it wasn't too bad and the other thought is was terrible and couldn't understand how the first vet could think this. There just wasn't a whole lot of experience out there with these pups because many are euthanized shortly after birth. Kaye Fletcher tube feed "Hope" (Kaytee) around the clock for over a month... it had to be exhausting. It was surprising too that Kayt's mother didn't reject her because of the defect- http://oesusa.com/Kaytee/Dinner.jpg It's not always the case.

I remember when we took Kayt down to MSU for a second opinion on her eyes... a doctor from the surgical department at MSU heard there was a 6 month old cleft palate pup in the building and brought along someone else and asked if they could examine her. They seemed quite excited for the opportunity to look her over and later a bit deflated we weren't going to have corrective surgery done.

A former breeder once told me she tried to have a cleft palate surgically corrected in one of her pups and the surgery failed... twice. The pup was later euthanized. It can take multiple surgeries and it doesn't always have a happy ending.

These were two pups were born with cleft palates. They made the news last year and had a bumpy ride in getting the birth defects surgically corrected.

Euthanasia is the compassionate thing to do when the pup is not thriving or achieving that slow but steady weight gain. Doing the right think hurts sometimes though...

:ghug:
Jaci,
how wonderful you were able to work with this and THANK you for ALL the information! I wish more people were as open and unafraid to share information like this. We all need to learn in case it happens to us sometime. I know i would rather be prepared and KNOW WHAT to deal with at the time instead of being thrown to the wolves and wondering what i would supposed to be doing!

Thanks again.
Ali
Stacey
I am so sorry
There is never an easy answer.....
You will all be in our thoughts.
:ghug:
You did the right thing Stacy. I'm proud of you.
Ali
I'm sorry to hear about the pups stacey! :( I didn't realize that could happen to dogs!!!
Stacey, my heart goes out to you.  I'm sure this was one of the hardest things you've ever had to do, but you have to know that you did the right thing. I hope the rest of the pups are doing well. :ghug:
We can only do our best, and make the best, most informed decision. Go easy on yourself. You did great.

Huggle the other pups for me.
The other pups are doing wonderfully, :hearts: gaining weight like crazy, Panda really is a great mom, she barely wants to leave them for potty time. But when she does go out...its my time for PUPPY BREATH :excited:
Puppy breath is good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know you are incredibly busy, but can ya snap a few pictures for us?
Here are a few from yesterday :)

And this one, though a bit blurry is the firstborn, a huge boy who is now a whopping 1lb 11oz

Oh my...how precious!!!!!!!!!!!!! :hearts:
They are adorable...any names yet?
Awwww... they're beautiful Stacey :)
I love the picture of the first born.
Smooches to the precious babies.
Just beautiful :hearts: :hearts:
They are SOOOOOOO cute! :hearts:

Hugs to Panda and her babies.
I can almost smell the puppy breath from here!
How sweet they are
Who is getting first born? Can I have him? :hearts: I want to hear their names too! It almost seems easier to name each batch the same things as last time since they're changed later anyway. I think I said that last time too. This is coming from someone who will look at YUKI and say "that's 1 ....that's 2... " while she's out being bad on a walk as if she understands. All because I get confused to who I'm yelling at. I told my husband, "Ohhh bubby" [what I call lil j] in bed before ...more than once. 8O
They're adorable!!! Makes me want puppies!!!!!
Beautiful beautiful beautiful :hearts: :hearts: :hearts: now youve gone and done it i want a puppy
People haven't chosen their pups yet, so not sure which ones are going where just yet.

As for names, we considered naming them all versions of Ron LOL but haven't done it.

When I was planning on keeping a girl I was going to name her Piper, and I figured the whole litter would have names from the show Charmed, but now I'm not keeping the girl unless she turns out to be really, really spectacular.
Otherwise their names I guess would be (in order of birth) Leo, Piper, Wyatt and Chris.

We may never hear the end of it
I thought if we named them all variations of Ron then that would be it...we wouldnt have to hear about it anymore :sidestep:
