Prayers please!

My best friend Alexia's son Johnathan is on his way to the second hospital in 12 hours. He was brought into Eisenhower Hospital here in the Desert and they said he has e-coli poisioning from Tomatoes.

The tomatoes had been put back on the shelves here.
They went to a restaurant the other night and Johnathan was not feeling good, he said he was constipated and complained of cramping. Yesterday the constipation turned to severe diarrhea then vomiting.

Late last night they took him to Eisenhower where they gave him three IV's of fluids. He had vomited over 23 times. They said this morning this was the worst case they had ever seen and needed to transfer him to Loma Linda Children's Hospital. (50 miles away) Instead of waiting for transportation to be scheduled, Alexia decided to drive him there.

Could please keep him in your prayers?

Here is a pic I took of him on Monday at his Preschool Graduation

Poor boy!!! He and his family will be in my thoughts and prayers!! Please keep us posted on his recovery.
:(

We will keep him in our prayers.
Oh my gosh Elissa, that family has had so many tragedies recently with Alexia and cancer and now this. Jonathan will be in my prayers and so will the rest of the family.

Strength,
Precious little boy.
Sending prayers that he will be well again soon.
Fingers crossed and prayers said that Jonathan gets better soon.
Lots of prayers and sheepie light from the High Desert!!!!
a special pray for them.........hope all goes well
WOW, sooo sorry. I hope he gets BETTER FAST!
Oh no :( I will definitely hope for the best!!!!! That boy looks adorable!
Oh he looks like such a fun loving little boy, I will keep him and his family in my thoughts and prayers and hope for a speedy recovery for him.
Johnathan was released from the hospital and sent home for two days of bed rest (the Dr's obviously don't know this child because he doesn't know the meaning of rest). He has a bunch of prescriptions to help his tummy. They don't want him to eat for 24hrs. Poor guy.

On the way out of the hospital Alexia realized that the baby, Jose, was burning up with fever. Jose is 10 months old. The hospital refused to look at Jose, but allowed Alexia to take his temp. He was burning up.
Back into the car and from the Hospital and straight to urgent care for the baby. While I was on the phone with her Jose started to vomit.
OMG glad Jonathan sounds as if he is getting better, and I hope the baby is Ok. Golly gosh they are having more than their share of bad luck. fingers crossed for them. xx
Sending prayers and good thoughts.
Jose has a double ear infection his fever was 105.1 at the Urgent Care. 8O

When they were leaving from the Urgent Care after getting done with Jose, Jocelynn the 20 month old starting getting sick. So they turned right around and went back and Jocelynn has e-coli too. :(
Jocelynn however is not dehydrated yet, so the Dr's think they can handle her at home.

The cultures on the kids won't be back for a couple of days, but the preliminary cultures on Johnathan and Jocelynn were positive for e-coli. I guess with the other cultures they look at the strain to make sure they find where it's coming from. They had to file reports with the hospital and the Urgent Care about where they ate...etc. The CDC was notified.

Poor Alexia has been out of her house for about 13 hrs now. She hasn't slept at all since Wednesday and has 3 sick kids. She just had to get off the phone because Jocelynn started throwing up again and they are still in the car.

Luckily her older son Joshua has been at his Grandma's for the past two days.
Oh my, that is horrible!
I hope the kids all get better, how scary for them all.

The tomatos are still off the shelves and not being served at restraunts around here.
Elissa, that is too much. I will prayer for the boys and the family, that they all recover quickly.
Wow, that is a lot of have to handle. They are in my prayers.
Having three small children of my own this post really hit close to home. I just can't imagine.

My thoughts and prayers are with the entire family.
That poor family :( . I hope they all have a speedy recovery! BTW, how could a hospital refuse to look at a child? Even if they have no insurance I would think just out of compassion they would try to do something.
E. coli now?? It's been Samonella. I always knew vegetables were bad for you!!

Poor Mommy, 3 sick kids.
Okay could be Salmonella. She was half awake. She did tell me it was the tomato poisioning and the symptoms and bloodwork matched what the CDC had sent out about what to look for.
I thought Johnathan had been transferred to Loma Linda University. But when they called their PC Dr's office they told them to come to their office instead. This Dr's office is also Jose's Dr. The Dr that they saw was not the regular Dr that takes care of them there. When she asked if she could just take Jose's temp, they said she would need to sign a release of liability. They did not want to treat Jose...which is very messed up.

Luckily the Dr at the Urgent Care was better, he even offered to look over Johnathan again.

Everyone is finally home and Alexia is sleeping. The last time I spoke with her they were on their way to the pharmacy and then home. Her car had been thrown up in quite a few times. YUCK!!
I will get an update later.
many prayers being said from here...............
Wow! Just how much bad luck could one family have?? Prayers and good thoughts are being sent Alexia's way!
Oh my -- how awful. Many prayers are being sent for speedy recovery's and strength for everyone.
Prayers said for mom and the kids! The Lord says He won't throw more upon us than we can take. She must be an extremely strong and faithful woman!

Will continue to pray that God's perfect will be done!
They will be in our thoughts.....
how scary!
Hope they all get to feeling better soon!
My heart goes out to Alexia and her family. I'm sending my thoughts to all the family. I'm praying their little boy has no recurring problems. This is so sad.

Just got an update. Jocelynn has stopped power puking... nothing left in her but pedialyte, Johnathan is still power puking. :( He has been doing nothing but sleeping, waking up to throw up and going back to sleep.

Susan it was e-coli. The CDC called them this morning and said there have been two other cases in the Desert. Alexia said she hadn't heard about them. They told her she would be hearing about it soon.
They told her to keep the kid on nothing but pedialyte until the vomitting stops.

Jose's fever has been gradually coming down and he is his usually smiley self.
Update:
Johnathan is back on food as of today. Light food that is... he's on the BRAT diet. So far so good with him.

Jocelynn still cannot handle the BRAT diet and is only drinking pedialyte.
If she is not on food by tomorrow they need to take her back to the Dr.

Jose started walking tonight. He is only 10 month old. Alexia just called me all excited, she said her hubby just got home from work and sat down on the floor across the room. Jose just got up and walked right to him.

Josh came home Sunday evening from Grandma and Grandpa's and luckily missed the grossest part of his brother and sister's illness. :phew:

Some good news for Alexia too... Bloodwork just came back and the Oncologist said it looks like the cancer meds are finally starting to work.
I made a suggestion to her Oncologist and he agreed with me. They took her off all her pain meds she is on for Fibromyalgia (prescribed by the old pain management ). You would not believe the cocktail they had her on.... INSANE!! I will name a few.... and these were all together. Methadone, Morphine, Norco...the list goes on. This was crazy since not one single medication she was on was actually helping her at all. She had no relief from her pain, just lots of dopeyness and haziness when she was awake. Instead of dropping a medication when it didn't work, this Dr just kept adding more.

The new Pain Management Dr also agreed with the Oncologist and myself.

She's been off all of her pain meds for a few weeks now.
The Oncologist said to give it two months to see if these meds will work. (the pain meds were very likley blocking the cancer meds from working before). It's only been a couple of weeks and they see a difference. Please keep her and her family in your prayers!!

Thanks :)
This family has been through so much! I'm sending the most positive thoughts their way and hoping now the tides have turned and they will see sunshine in their days. My thoughts are with them.

Marianne
TONS and TONS of prayeres I will be sending that familys way. :!:
Thank you for the update Elissa. Alexia and her family will remain in my prayers. I was happy to hear the kids are doing better and that there is hope for Alexia. I am also keeping you in my prayers, you have been a very strong friend for Alexia and her family and I really don't know where they would be without you. You are an Angel on earth. :D

Ditto from here also
It finally made the news:
http://www.kesq.com/Global/story.asp?S=8648911
Please let them know I'm sending positive thoughts there way.
How aweful
Yes, Elissa, with out high Hispanic population you just know this was all over the news.....tomatoes, chile and cilantro. I think I heard 10% of all the cases are here in NM.
They had told Alexia it was the tomatoes. But they were at a Mexican restaurant so it could have been any of those things.
The CDC called her Monday to tell her that they found that the source was the restaurant's produce supplier with filthy conditions.
Well drat, I was hoping it was cilantro....... since I can't get near the stuff.
I am going to the Dr with Alexia today. Seems the new PCP was worried about some blood test results but won't discuss it over the phone.

The "smart ass" nurse that she saw there last time did not seem to know much. She told Alexia that she had Fibromyalgia because she was overweight. Alexia said, "Really, so why does my 100lb best friend have it?" The Dr's and Nurses here in the Coachella Valley are not exactly top notch. :(
I figured she could use me there.... and I can watch her back.
All the Dr's here seem to be major drug pushers.
Again she is seeing the know it all Nurse today, so she needs me.
Or this crazy Nurse will put her on al sorts of meds.... and that is not what the oncologist wants. He wants her off all meds besides the cancer meds.

I HATE cilantro.... it smells like Body Odor, I can't say it tastes like that.... because I have never tasted body odor. But I think it taste pretty nasty.
E - are you sure you aren't thinking of cumin? That
does smell like bo. Never thought of cilantro smelling
like that, but then I have a cilantro smell association that
has nothing to do with food...long story.

Shellie
No Shellie, I mean Cilanto.... nasty green stuff that comes in bunches. YUCK!!! :twitch:

As for Alexia.... They did an EKG which came back normal, but they rushed her off for a CT to make sure she did not have any blood clots.
The Nurse didn't tell her anything, but I figured if she had a clot they would have sent her straight to the ER. Instead they sent her for more blood work this afternoon.
She has to go back tomorrow for more blood work.

The Nurse assured her and I that the medication she is putting her on will not interfere with her cancer meds. She better be right!!

The Nurse had claimed to have read her charts yet was surprised when I mentioned Alexia's heart attack in February. Her attack was caused by a tumor growing on her heart. But at the last check, that tumor was gone.
(There is still one on her brain)

Hopefully the blood work will give some clues about her recent chest pains.

I am no Dr... but I know that it was not an Anxiety Attack like the idiot Dr's at Desert Regional suggested. Your heart rate does not drop to 34 bpm when you have an anxiety attack, you don't wake up out of a dead sleep from one and your blood pressure does not drop. The Nurse asked if they had done blood work there, they hadn't. All they did was say it had to have been a anxiety attack and send her home with some ativan. The Nurse did not seem surprised.

I will NOT be going back to Desert Regional for anything!!!
Elissa what a good friend you are to Alexa and I know she needs her friends now more than ever. You are her angel I'm sure, to fight this battle with her. I am continuing to send my thoughts to you both.

Marianne
I have a very interesting update..... will be posted in the Member's Only section soon.
In light of recent developments, it makes you question Jonathan's episode. Munchhausen by Proxy.....??
I don't know what it is, but it's definitely not healthy for those kids. :(
I've seen spelling with one or two h's.

It is where the caregiver (mother) causes the child to be ill or injured in order to receive comfort and compassion for herself.

Quote:
In Munchausen syndrome, the affected person exaggerates or creates symptoms of illnesses in themselves in order to gain investigation, treatment, attention, sympathy, and comfort from medical personnel. In some extremes, people suffering from Munchausen's Syndrome are highly knowledgeable about the practice of medicine, and are able to produce symptoms that result in multiple unnecessary operations. For example, they may inject a vein with infected material, causing widespread infection of unknown origin, and as a result cause lengthy and costly medical analyses and prolonged hospital stay. The role of "patient" is a familiar and comforting one, and it fills a psychological need in people with Munchausen's. It is distinct from hypochondria in that patients with Munchausen syndrome are aware that they are exaggerating, while sufferers of hypochondria actually believe they have a disease.

In many cases, a similar behavior called Munchausen syndrome by proxy has been documented in the parent or guardian of a child. The adult ensures that his or her child will experience some medical affliction, therefore compelling the child to suffer treatment for a significant portion of their youth in hospitals. Furthermore, a disease may actually be initiated in the child by the parent or guardian. Munchausen syndrome by proxy is considered distinct from Munchausen syndrome.
