Fatty Deposits

Poor Henley.... almost 11 in GREAT health except for these two lumpy pieces of fat on his left side.

I took him to 2 Vets and the U of P... nothing they can do. Surgery is too risky and there is no guarantee that they will not reappear.

His health is not in danger... they aren't pressing against any organs.... more like "love handles" although his weight is within range.

:(

Anyone else familiar with this? Is this a OES thing? Hen is my 7th sheepdog but he's the first with this problem.

His diet is very good.

My mom's Bouvier was riddled with them. The vet saw no reason to remove them as they weren't bugging him. He lived a very long life, too (especially for the mutant size Bouv that he was!).
My last girl was a mixed breed and she had them as she got older, too. Since they were not in any way life threatening, we left them alone. She never even acted like she knew they were there.
My Drez had quite a few of these, too. They were also not life threatening, so we just let them be. Unnerving, but harmless.
My first guy had them probably for the last 5 years of his life. One was palm sized behind his shoulder on the side. Didn't seem to bother him.
My Border Collie-mix has them. We've had some removed but she has so many others. We've had them aspirated to try to be sure they're ok. We just leave them alone now unless any are getting too big and she's going under for something else. She's just my lumpy girl...
Jack just developed his second one. I'm not concerned.
Hi Judith:

My last OES, Shakespeare, was covered with them. The veterinarian said as long as they weren't causing any problems to leave them alone. However.....the vet did check them each time he went in to make sure that there weren't any changes that would cause us to have to remove it.

We did remove one large fatty tumor from our American Eskimo when he was 15. It was in front of his should and made it difficult for him to walk. Surgery went fine and Sharkey recovered quickly and was back taking his two mile walks within a week.

Good Luck
