training a dog

I took my Chief to a trainer ...hoping to help him not jump...what an experience.....we were there 20 mins...I had a bad feeling from the start
she never talked to the dog...just put her lease on and started jerking him and saying heel......after five minutes she asked what his name was
after 10 mins I stopped the whole thing and told her I would get in touch with her if I needed her......she then informed me that after two weeks she would want to keep the dog to train it...........
now I might be stupid when it comes to trainers.....but is this how training goes....I have always trained my dogs ...they have never gone to a "trainer".........if this is it....they will NEVER go.........I really think Chief could use some GOOD training but htis person was not it.........so we are not looking again....and she was suppose to be certified

Certified in WHAT? I thought this mindset in training went out with the dark ages

Where are you located roughly? Maybe I can find you someone decent if you need them, though teaching a dog to not jump up is not that hard once someone has shown you how.

Oh, Dawn...road trip...surely you feel compelled to trek across Wisconsin once again

You did the right thing by leaving. And, no, you don't leave your dog with someone to be trained. The whole purpose of a trainer is to train YOU to train your dog. That's kind of hard if you're not there

Virtually anyone can hang up a shingle and call themselves a trainer. Some can be superb, many are below average to put it politely by any standard, and some are downright detrimental to your dog. That makes it hard to assess what you're dealing with. And if recent developments are anything to go by, some of the few certifying organizations that do exist aren't impressing me much.

References (from people YOU know and trust) plus asking to sit in and observe the person's working style can help you weed out the worst of them. And unfortunately not everyone would have had the guts to do what you did and walk out even when their gut tells them this is not a good thing.

Oh my - that is horrible!

It does tempt me to drive across WI - again.
You know, I still get people who ask me to take their dog and train it - seriously, I really do. And it amazes me. Good thing I am honest - I could make so, so much money ripping people off!

Please find another place to train. There are so many good ones, you had the misfortune of landing with a bad one. Stop in and observe classes at places you are considering. They should welcome you to do this. If they don't, or seem hesitant - run the other way.

Good for you!!!! :cheer:

I am so glad you followed your gut and left. I have learned to sit in on a class before I take a lesson - sometimes I will sit in again with my dog - I trust her insticts as well.

I would second Kristine's question - what certification and was it current/recent? I think you need to ask the next trainer if she/he is a positive trainer (I think that is how the profession is splitting these days). that or find a behaviorist - a certified behaviorist is almost guaranteed to be up to date on training methods.

If you can't find a good trainer right away get a couple of good books. In the meantime ignore him when he jumps - turn your back etc. make him sit or down for attention.
I am in northern WI.....there is a school called Rude Dog U....many references and good classes....this was a one on one and local....so thought I would try it.....I may have to bite the bullet and go to a class
I worry more about him jumping on children than anything.....he doesn't know he is big and he loves kids...I do well with the commands but my husband has a hard time....so of course Chief knows who he can fool
I may just try for another month until the classes open up......
Thanks all..........
