Heads and Tails

Two questions. Well, limiting to two for now :D

1. Should I trim Rufus' very long eyelashes? They keep getting included in his topknot

2. What do I do with his tail? Come on, there has to be someone who knows how to trim the thing!

I am getting the scissors out on sunday for an all over trim and no, probably won't post pics for a few months

I don't have experience with a tail, but I'd let the eyelashes be - they kind of blend in with the hair!!

Good luck with the trim - don't forget that sheepies are referred to as "shaggy" for a reason - this way the owners never need to feel guilty about giving a "shaggy" trim!! So post the pics!!!! :D
I know nothing about tails, having never had a dog of any breed that had one - oh, Lisa...

As for eyelashes, mine normally get trimmed to whatever length the rest of the headcoat there is. With the exception of Lizzie, who grows these wonderfully long lashes she bats at the men she meets. It's so much a part of who she is that I try to leave them long in her case. It does present an added challenge in the topknot department, but you get used to it, so I'd say it's your call whether they're a flirtation device or not..

Kristine
if you dont trim her eyelashes and they get caught in the topknot, she could end up looking like this 8O lol

i trim pandas... :D
When I have done the tails on mine I cut close near the bum area and then trim off almost half of what hangs down. I do not do a total shave down on my dogs not sure how short to cut it then. The white on the tip I also cut about half off.
Cassie if the eyelashes are so long that they get mixed up in his topknot just cut them a big shorter but still leave some length!

... and with the tail: I would do it as I do with other dogs who got tails, I hold the tail straight at the end of the tail and then I cut a "half moon" (if you can imagine what I mean? looks like:

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx (tail) - hold here!
and then cut from one end to the other a "half moon", leaving it shortest at the both end and longest in the middle, if you know what I mean?

or you also can leave it in one same length! Personal choice!

Good luck!! xx

Hey I still have my learning plates on with these things that hang off the butts of sheepies. :P

Tove is my mentor there and she is councilling me with those waggy things. 8) Yes done a bit of trimming there and still learning, teaching them at the moment to keep those waggy things down on a show stack.

When I received more instructions on the trimming aspect I will post for the outlet hole and feathering underneath and what to do on top. At the moment I am trimming the same way as you would with a Bobtail and ignoring that waggy thing. Have rounded of the white tip at the end to make it neater, can you tell I am a neat freak? :P

There is also no need to trim the eyelashes, all of mine have that tied and in their top knots. Heck I love those long lashes. They are there for a purpose.
Thank you so much for the replies, Monika the half moon thing makes alot of sense and sounds like a good idea! I also like the idea of rounding off the end of the tail. I'm going to try fanning out the butt like on the Harrisburg video, working around the tail if I can.
It's almost 10AM, Greg is out running Ru, when they get back I will start. Hoping to be finished by 6PM if it goes well  If things go very wrong it's out buying clippers tomorrow

I'll prob post pics so you guys can give me advice on where and how to tidy him up
Dont forget Cassie: if you do the Half Moon tail and you hold the tail outwards, to brush it down first with a comb so you can see how the hair falls and then cut off!

Good luck!! xx

PS: Pictures please!!
I cut him to 3.5 inches, I think he looks cute but I miss his hair! Not done his feet yet, pics coming soon :D
whistles patiently for the piccies

Archie needs to see what Archies 1/2 brother looks like cut.

Archie currently is a still fully huffenfluffen pup
:D I've still not done his feet  But I have uploaded the pics, just waiting for approval.

Don't feel bad. I cut Che way back last weekend and still haven't done his feet OR his head. 8O

Looking forward to Rufus pics. Maybe then I'll be inspired in terms of what to do with Che's head

OK here he is. I think he looks cute but..... I MISS HIS HAIR

I'm fairly happy for my first ever attempt though.

Greg says he likes it better, I have promised Ru I will never cut his hair this short again (unless I really have to) my poor boy he's so naked. It's 3.5 inches long now, I have not done his feet he keeps chewing the fur off his back leg which is why it looks a strange shape that side. I have tidied him up since I took the pics.

I think you did a great job!

You are braver than me I take George to the groomers.
hehe his head looks huge - quite funny really.

I know you have yet to do that

Hasn't he got grey legs?

Did he protest at all?

I couldn't envisage me getting more than the first click of the scissors and he'd be off

Seems like a pretty fine job to me.
Oh Cassie, Rufus looks fab! Must have been difficult for you to do this by yourself?!

... yep and he does look funny with his "big" head!!!    Send new pictures when you have done his head!!

How did you do his tail now? Did you cut the half moon?
