BAD BAD BAD haircut

  Baloo and I tried a new groomer (because we wanted to look GGRRRReat for the NEOESR Picnic this weekend...and our grromer was booked solid and she's also cutting back in her schedule because she's about to have another baby) and AAGGHHHH ~ He looks soo not great. 8O I want to sit down and cry. My hubby thinks I am nuts for worrying about a haircut.... and I KNOW it will grow back.... but AAGGHHH.... what to do in the meantime???

OK Picnic People Tomorrow.... NO Laughing at Baloo's new haircut!!

We are going to our regular groomer for cuts from NOW ON!!!!

How bad could it be?

Trust me, at the picnic you will see every conceivable kind of sheepdog in every conceivable kind of 'do and it would take a LOT for Baloo to stand out. It's not like going to a dog show. They're pretty much all in their civvies.

Do a little touchup with your scissors. :D
He probably likes the cooler do - regardless of the look.

How about a picture??? We will be properly sympathetic. :)
As cute as Baloo i,s a "bad haircut" will look wonderful! I want to see pics please, for those of us who cannot make it to the picnic.
We've all had those haircuts!  There's the psudo-Airedale, the pseudo-Bichon, the pseudo-poodle, the pseudo-springer and the grey greyhound with the Bichon head. It all grows out. You can always be a last minute entry in the costume or hat contest......
it can NOT possibly be as bad as pandas recent haircut....

im not kidding when i said that i was calling her piggy skelator..(pink for her nose and lips and skelator for her sunken looking eyes)

i got a tad too carried away with trimming around her eyes.....it does grow back...

Don't forget the pseudo-Giant-Schnauzer!

It all depends on the groomer of the day if they know how to shape the head round like a sheepdog, and no pom pom over the stub!

Don't worry about the 'do. Really. Everyone will think you're a great parent anyway, and MOST of the dogs will be in a very short cut.

I've been to 13 or 14 of these, I think.
Once my groomer cut Violet like a poodle. 8O

Only once??? Lucky you!

I got my first OES when she was six months old. When she was just short of a year I took her to a groomer for the first time. When I picked her up I seriously thought the woman had given me the wrong dog. If not for the fact that this bizarre looking critter recognized me, I would have have demanded the lady take the gray & white greyhound mix back (OK, so the dog was also from a BYB -- that didn't help  )

I thought I had handed her in mat free. NOT  The woman was so pissed off she took her down to the skin. Okee-dokee.

With no real breeders near me (that I knew of) I had no one to ask for help to learn how to groom for myself. Nonetheless, my brushing improved a bit and I found a new groomer whom I'd take her to every three months to be shaved down. I never knew if I'd get a poodle or a schnauzer back, depending on her mood (and not even a very nice poodle -- I grew up with poodles and most groomers know how to groom THEM). I tipped heavily and we finally settled into a schnauzer look which I deemed the less offensive of the two.

For all that, I remember the groomer fondly. She was very nice to my dog, so that counted for a lot. The rest is only hair, right?

I've groomed every OES I've owned since myself (or, frequently, with a little help from my friends 8) ) That way I either get what I want -- or what I deserve    And even with the grooming tools involved including grooming tables (multiple now so I can multi-task), a high powered stand dryer, the $50/gallon shampoo and the conditioner and brushes (that Sybil eats) and slickers (ditto) and combs and...- oh, and the scissors I'm not allowed to own  ) and the clippers and blades and...I still figure out I come out ahead. Or at least I did until Sybil arrived. 8) And the scheduling is a lot easier too

Conclusion: we need more grooming sessions like the Harrisburg one.

I could have written every word of that! EXACTLY what happened to me the first time I took my first OES to the groomer! "UMMMMMMMMM, that's not my dog!"

Baloo...don't fret. You're a handsome boy and everybody will LOVE you at the picnic. ;)
Guess I was always lucky. I got my 1st OES in 1985. I went to a groomer (recommended by a friend) who did a fantastic job on making my OES look like an OES! I took her in 4 times a year. 2 times she bathed, brushed her out & trimmed her up for me. The other 2 times she bathed her & did a scissored puppy cut on her. I kept her pretty well brushed out in between. Only once, when I was busy with my son's high school graduation, did her coat get out of hand. When I took her in for her "puppy cut" they called & told me I had 2 choices...$80.00 to demat her or $35.00 to shave her down. We opted for the shave down because we felt dematting would be too hard on her. This was back in 1992. But at least they called me first! When I picked her up, I about died! I looked my dog in the face & said "THIS will never happen again!" After my dog passed on I got my 1st show dog. Needless to say I was told I had to learn to groom my own dog if I wanted to take her into the show ring. And the groomer agreed as she said she really didn't do show grooming (although I do have to admit that's what my 1st one alway looked like after she was done with her!). Now I really enjoy the grooming.
I have always groomed and kept my OES in long coat as I don't trust anyone else. Now give me a pair of clippers and I have no idea what to do and how to use them. 8O

Hey it is hair and will grow back, so don't worry you will be back to your fluffy fuzz ball in no time :D

My old girl Kelsey went off to a groomers for the first time at over 13 years of age and before bries litter was born, heck what a disaster, I asked for a puppy clip and there was not one matt or knot in her coat when I booked her in, she ended up shaved on the body, with all her head coat left, she looked like a giant head and bald body when I picked her up and I was so UPSET, at least now she is looking OK and is enjoying the not so much grooming requirements on her old bones and body. She is at a cute fuzzy wuzzy stage now on her body and takes me no time to just comb her on the floor as she can't handle the grooming table anymore.

First time and last time for me and a groomer doing my dogs :P
our last oes went to the groomer just once.! Katy was about 9 months old and she shaved her down to the skin. She looked awful not helped by little tufts she had missed, and the fact that she came into season and looked really sorry for herself. First and last time we used a groomer!
as i have learned.....i can do JUST as bad of a job as some groomer...so i would rather do it myself and put a paper bag over both of our heads when we go for walkies....
For a few years here we had a wonderful groomer who could make Splash and Olivia just beautiful not matter their coat length. I was the one who wanted shorter hair but the groomer would trim lightly, shape and return wonderful fluffies. Of course it meant I had to return the girls often for upkeep ......... so the groomer was getting her money from us! Smart gal. Guess not enough money as she left to go into real estate  Before then and after we knew how to get around a sheepdog with clippers and continue to this day. No fluffie lion's head, everthing goes.

Now Glacier is an entirely different animal! There's no magical clear space under the coat for the clipper to slip into. She's cotton from tip to skin......just scissored off the legs removing the clydesdale look and may do the head soon day so she's not our "Lion Queen."
my OES was a rescue at 7 months and she arrived naked :). I grew her out for about 6 months and she was looking pretty good. I took her in to get her bathed and trimmed up a bit, with VERY SPECIFIC instructions to NOT SHAVE ANYTHING and to keep the length, just even her out and trim her with scissors. I told her I want her to look like an OES and stay long for the winter. Well, I don't know what this lady's perception of an OES is but she came out looking like a Scottish Terrier. I was in tears - and you know what she told me when I explained how upset I was and how wrong she got it --Hair Grows Back! Yes, of course it does, but I didn't want to hear that from HER.

She had shaved around her eyes and forehead, but left the beard and the ears, shaved the whole body, but left the legs really long. I was devistated. They offered me $10 off my bill.

It was a horrible experience.
I've learned you have to be VERY specific when going to a groomer. And I tell mine if she feels its a problem, just leave the lenght and I'll cut it myself. Groomers tend to shave to the skin rather than take the time to brush through any mats, etc. And if your dog is like mine, and gets a little difficult on the grooming table, they tend to shave because its easier.

I "interviewed" several groomers before selecting one. Asked a million questions...have you done any OES before, do you cage dry, how many dogs do you do a day, ect. The more dogs they have appintments for, the less time they can spend on your dog and the quicker the shavers come out!

Hair will grow out. I worry more about shaver burns.
Ok.... so he was not the only one there nearly naked. WHEW!!!! and no one laughed at him.... Double WHEW!!!

I agree with Ron.... when I picked up Baloo I thought he looked like a Giant Schnauzer.... I nearly died!

and I learned the hard way to follow along with Darcy.... do it myself and carry many a paperbag to hid in!!! HA HA HA HA

Thanks Guys... I KNOW it will grow back. I just felt bad for him. He looked at me with such a pitiful glare when I got there to get him. I didn't know wether to laugh or cry!
OK, I live in SW Florida and it is impossible to find a groomer who can do a sheepdog down here. I had one that did a half decent job, but she kept them for (I'm not kidding) 8 to 10 hours and I just couldn't put them through that. Most groomers here do not even do large dogs, let alone a sheepie.
I bathe them myself, no small job, and then pay $85 each for a crappy, and I mean CRAPPY haircut for them. I am trying very hard to master the clippers myself so that at least if they don't look great, I'm not out $170. The groomer comes to my house and cuts them on the lanai. The groomer is nice, but has no clue about doing a sheepie cut and they always look like they have been run over by a lawn mower.
I keep them short because it is so flipping hot here. I have a set of Oster clippers and some good shears. I'm afraid to do their nails, though. If anyone has any ideas for me of how to learn to give my kids a decent clip, I would appreciate it so much.
Thanks!
Looking tacky in FLA!

wasn't there a video of Mandy shaving down Carl on the Harrisburg videos?

Well, where the heck have you been and where were you this weekend when Maddie lost her battle with the clipper??!!!

You know that old saying" "dog looks like he lost a fight with the lawnmower?" Well, she does.

Poor girl    If it wasn't so warm out I'd slap a sweat shirt, a hat and some shades on her. She's threatening to bring me up on charges for indecent exposure.

The forum has now been blocked at my work and I am looking for a new job!! Otherwise, I've been out digging in my yard so there's been little grooming going on here!! Should have put her on a plane and shipped her out here, I'd have groomed her. After this weekend, I'll have a 4th one to groom so it's your last chance!!!

Nope. It's a new proxy server that continuously tightens and refines it's filters. I was yelling at one of the IT guys the other day and telling him I would be sending the cops over to "visit" if they didn't fix! They said that if that happened then it would only get worse. I told them I had nothing left to lose!!!

Hello All..have been off the internet for four months...moved from Indiana to Phoenix....noticed concerns with groomers and perhaps I can help a bit...I groomed show OES for years...now have only one male, who I keep in a two inch puppy cut....he was shaved down, then when he got to the length I wanted...it became just maintenance....I give him a full bath every week (loves them) and brush him out when he is almost dry...no matts EVER at this length...then give him an all over trim every couple of weeks to keep his outline and NO groomer is needed ever....he is adorable, clean, mattless, and happy in this heat....hope this helps a little.
Great tips - I have Morgan at about an inch now, maybe a little more and it is his ideal summer length. do you scissor trim or use shears with a spacer?
Hi Kerry - your two OES are adorable....I just sit on the floor and brush Luc with the ONLY brush that works for me....All Systems No. 1 large pin brush...when he is pretty dry...then just scissor him and make him look even...he lays on the floor and loves the attention...no more groomers!! Hope this helps...Lynne
Welcome back to the 'net... and your oes.org community!
Thank you Ron...my OES pulled me to the ground = shoulder replacement...not his fault....I moved from Indiana to Phoenix and have been without internet for FOUR months....horrible....glad to be back.
Hey Lynne, you and Kerry should talk, you're both Jere people. Her Marley is one of the family.

I am very lax on my pedigree research.
