Salvaging mats, and should I shave my pup?

Hi, everybody.

My pup has developed a mat right under his chin. It is hard to see, and hard to comb out since he moves his head so much. Should I just trim it off, or is there a way to salvage a mat under the chin?

I'm also wondering if I should shave my 7 month old, 80 lbs pup. I originally was thinking of keeping his beautiful puppy coat until early next summer and shaving him down.

Will he be extremely uncomfortable if I make him go thru this whole summer with his current coat? Our summers in Northern Calif. are relatively mild, but we might have some isolated days of temps reaching into the high 80's and low 90's. I am carefull in keeping the dog cool on those days (lots of water & ice, shade, no exercise, and in AC'd areas as much as possible), but I'm willing to have him shaved if guys think he's going to be very uncomfortable.

Do not worry about your pup as he will look for shade, settle down and sleep when it gets too hot. Remember the coat protects from the heat as well as from the cold.

The pup will have to learn to stay still when you brush it or want to take out matts, just patience and showing him you are the boss when it comes to grooming, as far as the matts are concerned pluck them apart and ease them out with a brush.
