Iowa Disaster - Offering Whatever Help I Can Give

I just saw the breaking news of Cedar Rapids flooding and it is bringing back memories of Katrina. If anyone needs help or if any of the animal rescues need help, please let me know if I can do anything.
Respond to this topic here on forum.oes.org
I haven't heard anything yet through the animal grapevine.
I just drove through there 4 times this past month with our trip out east, then down to Sheepiepalooza. It is a pretty city, built right around the river. :(
Nothing is hitting the grapevine here either yet, But the person locally who keeps me in the loop will be at the New England picnic this weekend. I'll be at an agility trial on Sunday and so I'll see what the word is by then.

Flash backs...I hadn't even thought about that.

Even though the hard hit areas are more widespread geographically, because the population density is lower, hopefully they won't see the fallout in terms of animals in need that followed Katrina. I think I heard an IL shelter had to be evacuated, but no SOS yet as far as I know.

So typical of you to want to step up to help.

:ghug:

OK, here we go  :
Permission to cross post as needed....

I just got off the phone with Mark Schearer, head of the IOWA VETERINARY
RAPID RESPONSE TEAM [(515) 281-5798].

He indicated that they have been working with the AKC Disaster Relief
Dept(Lisa Peterson). I believe he said that the AKC would be sending them
SEVERAL HUNDRED crates and kennels to assist with the pet shelters in the
Cedar Rapids area. Truly amazing! He couldnt say enough good things
about the AKC!!!!

But, that doesnt mean everything is done. They are going to be in dire
need of volunteers to help with the Linn County animals that are pouring
into the Kirkwood Equine Ceneter in Cedar Rapids. Projections indicate
that
there will be OVER 800 located at that site...and my guess would be that
the latest round of storms may push it up to 1000.
With the Cedar Rapids Shelter being a total loss...Kirkwood will
serve for the next several months as a base of operations.

If you would like to volunteer to help, please call the Operations Center
in Des Moines. 515-323-4267

The Des Moines Disaster team is coordinating the volunteer effort so that
the folks at the Kirkwood can focus on the dozens of cats, dogs, horses,
etc that are coming in EVERY HOUR! Its a rate of 25 per hour...

I did not get the Johnson County information as he was called away to an
emergency briefing to discuss the violent storms that are heading our way
tonight. I'll forward that as I get it.

Once again, volunteers are needed at the Kirkwood Community College Equine
center...call 515-323-4267 to help. It is critical that when you signin
at Kirkwood, that you sign in as IVRRT. That way you are covered as a
"temp" employee of the state of Iowa for insurance purposes.

Hug your hounds, unfortunatly it is going to get worse before it gets
better. We got 4 more inches of rain today.

I donated in Sybil's honor. I'm so glad she spared my debit card when she stole my wallet two nights ago

AKC and AKC CAR Offer Disaster Relief to Iowa Shelters; Volunteers Still Needed to Help Companion Animals in Temporary Shelters

[Wednesday, June 18, 2008]
-- Local AKC Club Members Help Aid Displaced Companion Animals; Additional Volunteers Still Needed --

In the wake of recent flooding in Iowa, the American Kennel Club® and AKC Companion Animal Recovery have donated much-needed supplies to temporary shelters housing displaced pets and are working closely with area officials to offer assistance and coordinate volunteers.

Reaching out to local AKC club members in the affected areas, AKC and AKC CAR have been able to assess needs and coordinate several shipments of crates, portable kennels, bowls, leashes, collars, harnesses, food, and other supplies that will help volunteers care for the hundreds of companion animals now located at two major temporary shelters - Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids and the Johnson County 4-H Fairgrounds in Iowa City.

The AKC has been working closely with Scot Northern, President of the Cedar Rapids Kennel Association and Mark Shearer, Iowa Department of Agriculture Homeland Security and Veterinary Response Coordinator. Both men are working with the AKC to facilitate the immediate fulfillment of supplies to facilities with needs.

"As people were being evacuated near the river people began to wonder where they were going to take their pets," Northern recounted. "I heard about the shelters being set up and immediately contacted the AKC and AKC CAR, which gladly helped to supply the shelters. I'm also so proud of my club members, many of whom offered to help others in need, even while being evacuated themselves."

"Since last week we have been contacting AKC clubs in the affected areas as well as local disaster officials in order to provide assistance for the benefit of any dog or companion animal displaced by the floods," AKC President Dennis B. Sprung said. "We are able to offer assistance with the help of our friends at Dog.com and Jewett-Cameron and with generous donations from individuals and clubs including the Cedar Rapids Kennel Association, New England Dog Training Club and Greater Kingsport (TN) Kennel Club. We are thankful for the outpouring of support."

"AKC and AKC CAR continue our outreach to officers of AKC affiliated clubs, humane society and animal control shelters and other organizations to identify affected and potentially affected disaster areas regarding dogs and their owners," said Tom Sharp, VP and CEO of AKC CAR. "By being proactive before flood waters rise we can let potential temporary shelter coordinators know we are here to help should people and their pets need to be evacuated. This outreach has included the Missouri Humane Society in case flood waters continue to rise."

Should dog clubs, shelters or individuals need disaster assistance or hear of those in need please contact Director of Club Communications Lisa Peterson at lxp@akc.org or 212-696-8360 or AKC President and CEO Dennis Sprung at 516-637-6567 or dbs@akc.org.

The AKC will continue to post frequent updates to our website at www.akc.org.
