neutering my cockapoo

I got my cockapoo at a young age but never really thought about  neutering him because none of my other pets were but now he is out of control and i was wondering if i neuter him if that would help? He is 17 months. I don't know if neutering him would help with the aggression, marking, and humping. He has started to do it in the house and i can't seem to get him to stop. Has anybody gone through this stituation? what did you do?

I would neuter him with the understanding that it won't magically fix his behavioral problems, only intense training will do that, but at this point it certainly can't hurt and it may take some of the edge off of him.

A lot of not so carefully bred Cockers have the same issues you're describing, as do some of the smaller poodles from similar sources. It sounds like you got the best of both worlds and it tends to not be easy to deal with, so if his aggression is in any way escalating, you may want to find a good behavioralist.

Other than that, the good news is that you can deal with one of his issues pretty easily: Try pants or a belly band for the marking issue. If he can't get his scent on things, that sort of defeats the purpose, so he may just start to fade it out. If nothing else, it will hopefully seriously embarrass him as it did my (neutered, by the way - not having read the manual, he started marking AFTER I had him neutered  ) male. He was mortified about having to wear shorts (obviously, only inside), but it interrupted his pee pattern long enough for me to get a handle on his behavior, which I did by only letting him go pantless when I could devote my full attention to him. I trailed him around the house and would tell him uh-uh! the minute I could tell what was on his mind. It took me a couple of months to say he was truly solid, but it did work.

Of course, this only works if your dog respects "uh-oh" and even being verbally reprimanded doesn't send him into a rage. Can you safely handle him?

Hi,

Yes, I'd also advise to get your boy neutered. Just remember that it takes a few weeks after neutering for all the hormones to dissapate within the body so you won't see any major differences right away.

It's not a cure all for everything as some behaviors are based on learned behavior but generally neutering makes a difference when the testosterone level goes down. Good luck to you!
