Red patches under fur?

Hi everyone!
I'm not sure if this would be best posted here or in Health, but here it is...

We just had our friends over who own Matunus, an 8 month old OES. While bathing him the other day, his owner James noticed some redish patches of skin. The fur right around it is also slightly red. The patches are about the size of a twoonie (Canadian two dollar coin) but not round and have a slightly speckled look to them. It almost looks a bit like dried blood, but there is no wound or scratch anywhere to be seen. He has 2-3 of these patches. They are likely going to take him to the vet but I said I would post here first and half on their behalf.

Thoughts???

Could be hot spots that scabbed over. Given that there's redness, they may still be irritated. If the fur is discolored around it, it could be from licking. Even if they haven't seen him licking, dogs can get really sneaky about it, especially if they know they're not supposed to do it. My girl Lucy was a master at hiding it.
