I give my dogs beef marrow bones. I freeze them and they work on them all day. When the inside is gone I put peanut butter in them and freeze them. You can cook them, I have done both.
I give mine beef marrow bones and soup bones. They love them!! I actually picked them up some tonight so they are all content chewing on their bones :) I have never cooked them for them but I know you can. I also have stuffed them with peanut butter and they LOVE that!! :)
Mine have Raw Beef Bones, you never give a dog a cooked one to chew on as they splinter and can cause problems.

I get a big RAW beef marrow bone and if really large get the butcher to run the saw through it and have it cut into 4 or so pieces for them to munch on. Brisket beef raw bones are also good, just make sure the bone is big enough to not be accidently swallowed whole.

Raw Lamb shank bone is also another yummy to chew on and keep them busy for hours.
thanks so much for you input

I did not know they splinter!! Good to know. Thanks for the info :) :)
are these available at a butchers shop? or specialty pet stores?
The meat market or butcher shop would be the best for a fresh bone. If you don't have access, then most pet supplies around me carry processed ones as well.
I give mine Beef Ribs, Marrow Bones and Soup Bones.
I freeze them and then semi thaw they out. They love their beefcicles.
I go to the Grocery Store and check out what they have in the frozen section, if Beef Ribs are cheap I pick some up. The other bones you need to go to the Meat counter and ask the butcher. My grocery store will either give them for nothing or charge a dollar for at least 3 big soup bones. 8)
Very hard to get here. The used to be free. But I happen to come across 2 big bags for $10.00 each I have to say there is about 20 in there. I have been looking out for them since January 2007 I thought I was just missing them, but the cashier sad very rarely she sees them. So I am treated them liked gold. Sami was in doggie heaven, she was wet and sloppery but in heaven. Blue, while his Blue he loves his bones  and everyone elses. But he did not get any of the others on these bones.

Publix has the marrow bones in the Atlanta area. I can get 4-6 good sized ones for about $3.

I should just ask for Marrow Bones at the butchers' counter?
Yes, Darth, usually they're in between the steaks and the roasts in my Publix, but just ask a butcher if you don't see them. Kroger doesn't have them, just Publix. I buy a bunch every time I shop and stick them in the freezer and give them to the dogs frozen. I call it my Doggie Prozac.

LMAO

Just a warning, you may want to seperate your dogs when you give them bones. I have to seperate mine or Rags will steal both.
ROFL

We can't say the word "bone" in our house or Toby will park in front of the freezer and pester us until he gets one. So it's "Did you give the dogs a B-O-N-E?" But now he's learned to spell, so we need a new code word. it does work well when I want him to do something and he's put on his stubborn hat (of course, then I have to pay off :D )
so funny reading this.. between the bones in my freezer... and me making chicken soup today, the dogs will not leave me alone. I have a upright freezer and they are both there with their noses RIGHT there. And Blue does try to steal all the bones. My poodle I put in the bathroom. Sami is gone outside that fast and hides, Blue will finally give up and have his own.

yes; with Luna's "resource guarding" I usually supervise all yummy-treat activities. But I read soemthing very interesting in one of the aggressive behavior books I got. It said to ONLY give Luna and Tonks thier treats when they are both present. That way they associate these goodies with being together; only when they are together do these yummy treat-activities happen. Its a positive re-inforcement of thier behaving while together. The minute one growls or gets aggressive, the yummy treats are taken away from both dogs.
Sad day for my two dogs. Blue gor sick on the bones. To rich for his tummy. He was in his glory while it lasted. But no more bones....... I will have lots of soup thou
you need to scoop out most of the marrow. you can put peanut butter or their regular food in the bone cavity as well. eventually the marrow doesn't bother them.
thanks Kerry; thats good to know. Luna has a pretty sensitive stomach.
