The Hue and Cry

An old fashioned word but meaning when someone put the call out for help , people would come from all over to assist.

The other evening, another realtor was visiting my home and I made sure all the bunnies were outside. Hefner, my neutered male bunny and his lovely wife, Puff were in a portable 12 by 12 enclosure. Puff as lovely as she is and very tiny is very princess like. Hefner probably had enough of her bickering and dug out of the enclosure. After the realtor left I realized Hefner was running around the yard but was unable to catch him.

Hefner is a domestic feral. Meaning some previous irresponsible owner dumped his mom where she in turn had babies. Hefner is one of them. There are also many domestic feral cats out there too. Mickey, Petunia and Daisy are ones that were domestic ferals..born in the wild to domestic mothers. Domestic ferals have some wild tendencies in which they are scared of humans but don't have enough wildness to truly be able to survive on their own. Hefner, whose white coat would be a beacon to hawks and owls was in danger. White domestic bunnies (that is not a natural rabbits color unless living up North) usually get killed their first night of release.

I managed to give chase to Hefner who got as far as three doors away until I lost sight of him. Every single house on my long block have numerous shrubs and bushes in which he could hide. Like searching for a needle in a haystack.

The hue and cry: My fellow members of Small Animal Rescue came the following day to assist. People of all ages and genders..Housewives to Engineers. They came from all municipalities around my area, some drove 50-60 miles. We searched, knocked on doors, spent hours looking under sheds, people's yards, ect. Finally soaking wet and now dusk arriving we had to call it quits for the night. I thanked everyone and walked sadly back into my home.

A mere few seconds after they all left, a knock on my door...Hefner!!! Caught by a neighbor whom I met the previous evening in my search.

I thanked him profusely and plan on purchasing his two little boys a gift. It showed me that posters, knocking on doors and the help of good friends can possibly help find a lost pet. In this case, Hefner.

Don't ever scare me like that again, Hefner!

awwwwwwwww what a story marriane. so glad he is safe and sound
I'm so happy for you and Hefner. I'm glad he was found and returned so quickly :)
Thank goodness.
:D :D He is one adorable bunny too!
:phew: Glad he's okay!! What good neighbors you have. :D
Elissa, how ironic you spoke those last words in your post as just this evening I got in a scream fest with my next door neighbor. First time in 15 years so guess that's not bad odds and totally out of character for me. The other neighbors, however, were so awesome and losing Hef temporarily gave me a chance to meet them as I wouldn't have otherwise. They are further down my block. It was wonderful meeting so many kind and thoughtful people all over my neighborhood.

As for my next door neighbor well...that's another story.

Oh no! 8O
Been there and done that myself, in NY, when we lived in our townhome. But once in 15 yrs is not bad at all.

Glad you got to meet some good neighbors though.
So glad you found Hefner - what a cutie! Bunnies are actually really cool little critters, aren't they? Lots of personality and LOTS of attitude (or bunnytude as I call it.)

Here's my bunny:

He's got that "Get that camera outta my face or I'll break it" look - and he'd follow through on that threat too! :D

Sorry about your argument with your neighbour - these things do happen, unfortunately. I've been laying pretty low around this neighbourhood myself since I got Fitzwilliam. I don't think my neighbours are too impressed with his larger-than-life-house-shaking-reverberating around the neighbourhood bark! Oh well!
OMG Maf!!! Your bunny looks like my Princess Puff!
Here's Puff when she was having a "bad Hare day".

As for the neighbor ..after 15 years of harmony (on his end not mine) as he constantly finds fault with my yard, too messy - won gold in my city and 3rd in Canada for environmental gardening, grass too long (I mow with a push mower) yada yada...I am always friendly and never complain about anything they do.

I suspected he cut my tree on my side of the fence a few weeks ago. I took pics as the cut was at least 3 feet on my yard..it bothered me but I chose to do nothing. Until yesterday saw him reach over my fence and cut my rose bushes....my side! I said hello as he hadn't seen I was in my yard and he ignored me and high tailed it in his house. I chose to ignore that but was bothered. Then he did the unthinkable....and I blew like a volcano that simmered for 15 years...LOL.

He said, something to do with killing bunnies, cats and dogs.....that I was nuts and crazy to put so much care into them. URG!!! Love me love my pets...say something about my pets and you're toast kinda thing. I let him have it...ahhh feel good too and no regrets. I think he and his wife were both stunned as they didn't know I had it in me. Blasted him so that he was knocking on my door full of apologies. Hmph teach him to mess with an animal lover!
I love your "Puf". When I was growing up we used to have two guinea pigs a Female and a Male both white.....Muffy and Puffy. So when I hear you talk about Puf I think about my two......

Sorry about the argument with your neighbor, but it was a long time a coming....
