On-line bill paying

I might move into the world of on-line bill paying. Which is better, set it up through the bank, or pay the bill via the company's website? Like my AT&T bill says "click here to pay" and I would enter my bank info. Of course, I don't know how my bank does this, if they write a check or do the electronic transfer. I suppose I should ask them.

i do both - my cc company takes a few days to actually take th emoney out of my account so I enjoy the illusion of having more money. most is downe through my bank though so I can check at any time what I have in the account and what is coming out due to e payments in the near future.
I like paying at each website. I have all paperless billing so when the bill comes in, I just click the link and go there. I do often think setting it all up through the bank site would be more convenient because of all the logins and passwords (some of mine are different and sometimes I forget which is which, which is a pain!). I think the reason I didn't is because there's a service fee that I didn't want to pay and I didn't find the individual sites to be that big of a deal.

Some of mine do e-checks, others transfer and a couple take my debit card. Again, probably something you don't have to worry about if it's all through the bank.

I have a credit unit hardly any fee only if I have a very active month than its $5.95 - cheaper than stamps and definitely cheaper than late fees. the credit union does ebills and you can pay automatically or affirmatively. its great. has saved me a bundle in late fees when work gets crazy.
I have been using online banking for several yrs. I love it. The bank has a feature "pay many" which brings up the ones I pay monthly on the same page. I write the amts in, verify, and you're done. Takes an average of 4-7 days from the time you submit to the time they receive a check. There's also a feature that allows you to pay certain accounts wkly, mthly,..if the amt doesn't change. This will be done automatically. Takes minutes, no envelopes, no stamps. And, you can check online balances, and if checks have cleared.

Mine is like $9.95 unless you upgrade your account and keep something like a $5000 balance, which makes no sense to me to do in a non-interest bearing account. In all, it probably takes me an extra 10 minutes a month to go to each site and do it so it's not worth $10 to me but, especially for a non-Web savvy person, I can see how it would be a small price to pay!
I NEVER pay a fee for online banking, or for bill paying. Go to the merchant site and pay the bill on their site, or write a check if you must. Joan and I have written a grand total of 16 checks since January 1st!!!

I pay all of my bills online (or automatically) if possible.

My mortgage and the electric utility are the only entities that I allow to debit my checking account automatically. Both are level, predictable amounts each month as I am on level billing for electric.

Any vendor that allows me to pay by credit card is paid on my Discover Card. Most (like Verizon, our newspaper delivery, any online stuff) charge the card automatically. Any purchases made (including/ESPECIALLY grocery) go on the Discover Card.

I then pay the Discover Card through their site; they debit my checking account directly "at my command".

If you already have a balance on your card, this won't work especially well, as the interest rate is more than the 1% (max) cashback that you get from the transaction. However, there's nothing stopping you from using a NEW (or existing 0 balance) Discover Card to live this way... but it is IMPERATIVE that you pay off the full amount each month, so only charge as much as you are CERTAIN you can pay off in full.

You can't imagine how much money we earn on the cash back bonus! If you spend an average of $1,000 a month, your cashback would be about $101 for the year. If you spend $2,000 a month, about $220.
In addition, they have been having promos where for 3 months different types of purchases can earn 5% cash back up to a limit (so you get 4% more than the regular bonus!).

For instance this quarter (through the end of June) you get 5% cashback up to $400 in purchases at Department Stores, Clothing Stores, Home Improvement Centers and Lawn & Garden Centers. Next quarter it will be Gas and Hotels, up to $400 for the quarter. It's an extra $20 (well, $16 (4% of $400)) for the quarter. Doesn't sound like much, but it's an extra $64 at the end of the year, for nothing. Sometimes the bonus is up to $800 in purchases...

So if you charge $1,000 a month and take advantage of the full "Get More" bonuses up to $400, then you get $165 at the end of the year. Not bad. $2,000? $284. $3,000? $404, and so on.

Groceries and gas really add up! Come one, get paid to go shopping!

It's a good thing. :)

I have probaly written 16 checks in two years and now that my manicurist closed down I'll write less.

My husband uses Discover for all of his online bills and anytime he can when we shop (and IF he pays :) )

I am a miles junkie - I know it costs me to use the card and I'd be better off buying the tickets but I can't stop
I'll be honest, I don't have the discipline to just pay with a credit card and pay it later. It's not even that I'd spend the money I need for the bill, I would just look at it sitting there in the account and it would drive me insane that I couldn't spend it. It's a shame, too because the credit card paying is smart.
