Dog Seatbelts- Harnesses For In The Car?

Ever since I watched one of Victoria Stilwell's shows, I've been thinking about
doggie harnesses for in the car. She had mentioned the possibility of the
dog flying through the windshield and also taking your head off in the process
if you're ever in an accident. We always make them lie down but...

So I was looking at this one-

Does anyone use doggie seat belts?
Which one is the safest and easiest to use?

I prefer crates for long drives. They are safer (I think)
I do worry though that if there was a big accident they wouldn't be able to escape, but if they weren't crated I'd worry they would escape.
That's exactly what I was wondering... if crates would be safer.
But then I read this so I don't know what to think :?

I "think" that is referring to a small plastic crate (since they refer to the crate being secured with a seatbelt)
I use large wire crates in the back of my van. They are pretty snug between the back seat and back door, but enough play that I think it would prevent them from exploding like described.
I don't know, I don't really think there is a best way to protect them in the case of a bad accident. Dogs are not big enough in most cases to withstand the force of an airbag, plus airbags were not designed with dogs in mind. A dog sitting is positioned totally different than a human and I would worry that restraining it might make it more dangerous. Their necks or backs could snap if hit with the force of an airbag.
Hi Jaci :D
We have a size 6

That has yet to be used ...
Out of all the harnesses I checked out, it seemed to
be the best & the easiest to get on Beebles
We were planning on getting a soft top Jeep but boo hoo
It has not happened yet
but I still have hope
So the Roadie is up for a loan if y'all want to try it out

well they are never suppssed to be inthe front seat with the seat belt so no air bag issue.

I have the ruff riders for the Wrangler. we don't use them often. I think they run large. At some point there are too many dogs for crates adn people so seat belts are our only option.
A word of caution.

With any harness make sure it is the correct size and adjusted correctly for a snug fit.

When we first took Archie to the kennels for a day (we had a funeral to goto) he was in his harness, when we took him out of the car, on route to the entrance another car spooked him and he was out of his harness in a flash, a heart stopping moment I can tell you, it was all down to me not wishing to trap his fluff! and leaving enough space between harness and him to slide my fingers under.

Obviously know I am very cautious when fitting his harness for car travel.

Even with the harnesses, we'll be sure to keep collar's on them... their collars hold all their ID tags.
From what I read on the website, the Ruff Rider harnesses aren't supposed to fit snug. I would have thought snug was better :?

You should be able to insert between two and four fingers vertically between the bottom of the harness and the dog's back.

You're going to get a Jeep, Diane? :D
I can see you driving around the country with your three shaggies in the back! Thanks for the offer to test it out (the harness, not the Jeep )!

I think I'll order a couple to start... see how they fit.
Thanks everyone for your thoughts!
