Those who always have good luck, come Mr. J's way please

I'm taking Mr. J to the airport tomorrow (really friday morning since it's like 1 a.m.) so he can find a job anywhere in the lower 48 at a job fair. Outside of this "job fair," he hasn't looked anywhere else, so we're really hoping for the best here. It's stressing me out to the max!! I hate how relaxed he can be about everything. The company that's helping him find a job told him not to because his odds are good, but the question is really "are the goods odd (good enough)?"

The guys he's competing against are all military officers (that's all the headhunter deals with), so his resume isn't too different than theres minus what he may or may not have done in college.

If he comes back with nothing that fits our lifestyle then there's one more job conference in August although that will cost us an arm and a leg considering he'd have to get a last minute airline ticket there, and the one he has now cost $800 (with a watch on the best price for over 2 months, bought the recommended 6 wks out).

In the meantime, if anyone wants to come up here to hang with me... I'll offer free room, transportation, and food!!

Anyway, if you're someone who is always lucky, please blow some lucky dust to TX!!!

Lots of good thoughts being sent your way. I hope Mr. J finds the job of his dreams!
Good luck! :)
Lots of positive vibes coming Mr. J's way! Tell him to look out for the Angel Drez!
Good luck Mr J on the job hunt!!
How nerve wracking, but exciting at the same time. :D
Make sure you check out those MN companies!
Good luck!

When my husband was looking three years ago, the headhunter had him make a list everyone he knew - work or personally. He was to contact all of them and let them know he was looking. He gave them an electronic copy of his resume to pass around. My husband as looking for a very specific job, less than 500 possible companies in the DFW area and only one position at each of those companies - if they even had an opening.

We were amazed how well that worked. Three people, who didn't even know each other, recommended him for the current job. Mde me a believer.
^^

Mr. J has some GREAT connections in the oil business (father being CEO of one of their places) and several of their friends have friends, etc, etc... but he's so stubborn that he won't give his resume to them. If he finds something else he'd rather do, he feels his father would be too disappointed and also get on his case due to the loops he went through to get him a job. So, he wants to do this on his own. Mr. J is a very smart cookie, so I'm just going to have to trust he'll make the right decisions.
Good Luck Mr J!!!
What kind of job is he looking for?
good luck mr J!!!!!
Sending good luck & good vibes your way
Is managerial+right pay is what I think he's targeting. Maybe even sales though not his 1st pick.
Wishing Mr. J huge success!
Oh geeez.........I hope Mr. J isn't as stubborn as DH's brother in law who had a high placed father and refused to be associated in any way with anything his father may have contact/influence, etc. He was so pig headed about it he screwed up his life (IMHO as a outsider late in the game) On the other hand, his constant struggle to keep the family lead his son to over achieve (like the grandfather--West Point, etc) and is now with that corporation in Arkansas.

So I can understand Mr. J's wanting to prove himself, but fortunately he already has through his leadership in the military. And he will have to again no matter what type job he lands.....oil related or not.

Keeping the fingers cross and lucky dust blowing to Texas.
Good luck Mr J! :D

Hawaii would be a real nice place. Bogart says he and
Yuki can be Beach Butlers. All Mr J would have to do is
manage is keeping them away from everyones beach snacks.

Mrs J can teach hula.

Then WE will All come out to visit.

Best wishes, our good luck vibes coming your way~~~~~~>
Good, good, good, good vibrations!!! 8) All positive and all headed your way!! 8)
Best of luck..........Kathy
Hoping for the best of luck for Mr J
We have been through the mill these last 8 months.
We took a risk to start a business, not all plain sailing, had some very dark moments along the way,
(again father and son issues  )

Anyway we held up and fate led us in the end, all very bizzare, but thats another story :D
We now holding our own and going strength to strength,
slow,but hey rome wer'nt built in a day. :D

We wish you all the luck in the world
and we hope he gets the job he truly wants.
Mr. J left a message and said one of the companies he's interviewing with is Hills Dog Food. That would be funny if he worked for them. I just want to know where we're going to live!! :)

He listed 13 companies he thinks he has interviews with but half of them I have never heard of, so trying to figure out the spelling is hard. Maybe I'll have a better idea when I talk to him tonight.
sounds good so far  Maybe Yuki could be the spokesperson

BarksDoggie?
They were briefed on a few of the companies that will possibly hire them today ...rest tomorrow (locations), but so far if things go well...the choices will be

Minnesota
memphis tn
houston, tx
junction, tx
phoenix, Arizona
westchester ohio

He said he may not be able to call me tomorrow, but this is making me excited even though the interview process is 2 months long, so we're told. I hope he gets one of these.
Woohoo!!!
MN at the top of the list? :D
Hey Ms J,

I'm kinda late with my good vibes and well wishes. So blowing them extra hard your way and will cross my eyes, fingers and legs as well!

>>>>>>>>>Karma! Mr J and yourself have done more than your fair share for lots of people and I believe you will be paid back. Keep us posted!

Marianne
I hope you get a warm place!
I thought you were looking to come out east?
That's what I thought when he said Arizona...

Anyway, that particular company (some new chemo therapy for breast cancer) is actually located in NJ, Cali, Switzerland, Canada, and China ...so I'm not going to complain about Arizona. Now that I wouldn't prefer the climate of NJ ;) ...but I think Arizona would be the most affordable after doing a real estate search last night.

Hopefully Mr. J gets more "east coast" selections today.
I'm late to this thread as well. I know the stress of having to look for work in a deflated economy; so all my well wishes are with you guys right now!

And don't underestimate Atlanta; we're a growing city with lots of sheepies for playdates!
Good Luck to Mr. J :D
Best of Luck and I vote for Arizona..
Thanks everyone!

O-H-I-O :)
Junction Texas?? I had to look that up! It's out by San Angelo.......hubby lived there during WWII.......it's.....bleak. What, an oil job?? Tornado country. Houston is Hurricane and flooding country. Think safer!

You are right about Phoenix real estate, it's in the tank right now. Cheaper homes but if the market drops more.....Then again you get to grow your own citrus........and live near Darcy!
I hear St Louis has an AMAZING sheepdog community :D
I hope Mr. J gets a great job offer this week and you sell your house. What a week that would be!!
My vote is for STL.

(it's pretty close to me, is that selfish?)
SheepieBoss wrote:

Unfortunately, the companies go through a waiting period where I guess they sort out all the people they interviewed... so he won't know about the follow up interviews for awhile. :(

Most will follow up in a week as they like to get the second interview after the week wait, but they're told they've got 2 months.
HUSBAND CALLED AND SAID ADD milwaukee wi to the list!

Also, after tonight, he said he'll get many of his yes' for second interviews, and we can decide which ones he will go to (which will be at the state they're located and not tx), so the list should be dramatically shortened after we talk it out.

*fingers crossed*
...and, STL isn't all that far from Chicago!
Is the job fair just for military people, like at companies that the military kind of "sets up" for the people leaving the service? The 2 month interview process sounds very governmental or academic, lol.
I am sending some of my daughter Lisa's good luck to you and Mr J!! :D

She just graduated (double majored in history and business), and is going on for her masters (business). She has an OK job, at the Purple Heart Museum, as well as still nannying, while continuing with school.

Well, she felt she wanted to check out the jobs - was considering Austin TX with a friend, but nixed that one.
She applied online this past week with with several places, one a company up river from her in Poughkeepsie - they are a smaller firm that deals in water - from water supplies to treatment. Very green, also serve the international market. After she applied, she read through their company website and really liked what she was reading.

She decided to "stalk" them - and called the next day to ask if they recieved her resume and application. The lady who answered said they did, Lisa wanted to keep her talking, so said she was very interested in their company. The lady asked "how could your skills help our company" and the prepared Lisa easily rattled off her experience, making sure to link it to the stuff she learned about the company from their website. The lady was so impressed she invited Lisa to interview at 2pm the next day.

At the interview, she and the lady got on well - in fact her interview lasted over an hour. She called in one of the company founders and he asked her more questions for 20 minutes. The next day, they called and offered her the job!
Turns out they were already in the 2nd round of interviews, and never would have looked at her application if she hadn't called!

So - I am passing along Lisa's good luck - it sure helped her!!
RESULTS ARE IN :)

Not really, but we've narrowed it down.

So, we have to wait up to 2 months now for these follow up interviews, but 10 out of 14 companies he interviewed with wanted a follow up, and from there... he accepted 6. Some of them were companies that we just didn't feel were grounded [and big] enough to work for or flat out didn't like the location.

arizona
houston
westchester ohio
minnesota
milwakee, WI
memphis tn

thanks for all the good vibes!!

Mr. J seemed to really like the idea of living in ohio and has no problem living in houston or minnesota. When he lived in NM, he used to always go to Phoenix, and for some reason isn't a big fan. Funny to me considering he could live in houston forever, he says. Houston is the best for shopping and eating ...but good golly the weather bites sweaty butt.

He wants a job where there are a lot of locations so we can move around.

my top two off location alone are arizona followed by minnesota. I havc no idea why I want arizona. I should WANT houston b/c it would mean I get my backyard and house that meets my standards.
O-H-I-O!
Oh yeah, SPIN, a Great Pyr rescue in TX is having a bit of problems with copperheads biting the dogs this week.

You are right about AZ and the yard........water is expensive so grass is scarce.

Which Westchester, the one in Cincinati or the one up by Columbus? I'm assuming the one down south.

OK, job looking good........now to sell the house!
I know... the dang house has to sell.

I know nothing about ohio but I think I recall Mr. J saying Cincinnati.
Ohio would be cool, within driving distance for a lot of us along the eastern seaboard! :)
I know in MN you could get the house and yard you want for a decent price.

MN and WI will get you the 4 seasons very nicely- I think that is what my hubby and 5 brothers missed most when they were stationed in other parts of the country (and world).
If it's the Westchester near Cincinnati there will be lots to do. I love the Cincinnati area. My son went to college there & lives there now. They say Cincinnati is one of the cities that when companies transfer their people, the people don't want to move away from!
How long ago did Mr J visit Phoenix? It's changed drastically in the last 15 years. But the weather in the summer is hotter than ever. You can have grass if you want (Darcy has a beautiful lawn), but SheepieBoss is right, you need to check on the cost of water in each town. I love AZ, it would take a lot for me to go back to winter. But I know that other people prefer four seasons.

MA? I thought it's cold there in the winter?

His sister wants him to turn in applications independently instead of just relying on this headhunting company. I'm guessing that means she [who lives in san antonio but is from sweaty houston] doesn't like any of our locations. :?

edit: I must be tired. I thought your original post said We've got 4 seasons. Then again, this morning I wanted to call my husband as soon as I woke up and dialed his number on the palm of my hand and then placed it on my ear. I'm losing it.

Jo - I've been in HR my entire career, and I'm voting with your sister. More so, I'd advise that he utilizes the relationships his father has to his fullest. Good positions are had through networking, and the higher the position, the more true that becomes. Join associations in the industries and go to their luncheons or events, identify a person in upper management in an organization in which he's interested and take him/her to lunch, find a mentor in the industry and pick his/her brain, and by all means - never, ever rely on a headhunter alone. That is the most passive way to get a job there is. This is a full-on contact sport, the more contact, the more likely to find the right job right now. Send resumes (electronically and include a well-written cover letter every single time) directly.

BTW, my favorite job-search engine is www.indeed.com. It pulls from all job boards, newspapers AND private company listings. :D
It's true, my Dad always says that it's not what you know, its who you know. I'd highly recommend Mr. J getting talking EVERYONE he knows, and independently looking for a job as well. The same for selling your house, tell EVERYONE you know you are selling your house.
Well, we agree 100% that it's all about networking and who you know....
However, as I mentioned earlier in this thread, you're dealing with Mr. J. If you were to picture a "movie typical" drill sergeant (you know that mean guy you better listen to...) ...then you've got a glimpse of my husband. While he isn't mean ...in fact, he never yells, he has a very demanding presence about him as well as concrete stubborn personality.

His father deal... it's not that he wouldn't want to work for Conoco (who his dad was a big man for) ...it's he would feel obligated to take that job if his father went through hoops to get him that perfect job. His father isn't the type to "accept" him wanting to choose a different job. They have identical personalities except his father is 10x worse. So... if Mr. J had nothing come August, he WOULD turn to his father.

I have been telling my husband FOREVER to put in applications here and there so he can choose the job HE wants and not the one picked for him...

He knows... but going back to the stubbornness in him, he also likes every company that wants him to come back for a follow-up. He says he can picture himself perfectly happy at any of these companies, and the places he'd apply for independently would basically be the same and he doesn't have the time to do it due to all his military demands (ex: home depot as store manager wanted him back, so independently applying for lowes). He's extremely faithful (unlike his wife) so trusts that he'll get at least 3 offers for him to work there considering the company gets 90% people hired at companies they'd LIKE to work for within the first attempt (job fair). It's a very reputable headhunting company and hard to get into, and there's another job fair in August with again...only fortune 500 companies attending.

I'm just trying to give you an idea of where HE is coming from. I'm the nagging wife who is echoing what you guys are telling me. ;) At this point, I'd have to say I'm very happy at the possible companies he could be working for b/c of what they do, the potential my husband has to climb very quickly, and the locations.

I only get to say "told you so" if things totally bomb at his follow-ups.
It sounds like he is doing a great job of looking for jobs, and it sounds like he has some great opportunities coming from his job hunt. There is no doubt about that!

Last time I was in AZ, there was snow on the ground....
Yeah, Flagstaff

You are right, once in awhile Phoenix gets snow.......oh what a mess it makes for ...........an hour or two.

As for the comment Phoenix has changed in the last 15 years........ain't that the truth!! Since Mom left I don't go over there any more but every 6 weeks I was there saying, "What, a new subdivision and MORE traffic??" She lived in the Sun Cities and the latest developed community should have been called Sun City East Barstow!
SheepieBoss wrote:

Is that an inside joke? :?
Oh sorry, the Phoenix metroplex is expanding westward so rapidly with the "Sun Cities"....first Sun City, then Sun City West, then Sun City Grand, and now Sun City Fiesta...the California border can't be too far away.
Well, I told Mr. J what oes.org said, and so when his sister sent him a list of companies to apply to ...he said he would tonight. Just when I thought he was too stubborn :)

Actually I think he's bored as hell in tx waiting around w/parents.

His parents are actually car shopping and I told him to tell them what Beaureguard's mom and a few other users drive and how they like their car ...and he laughed (as if his parents want to hear "Beaureguard's mom said her toyota is a nice ride"). That's definitely a sign I'm on here too much. 8)
SheepieBoss wrote:
Yeah, Flagstaff

Yes, you are correct!! But I also saw some streams freezing in Sedona. And my grandmother who lived in Tuscon always gave me Tuscon calendars every year, and there were photos of snow on the ground in some of them!!
Flagstaff is up at 7,000 feet and has a ski area out back. It's not the town you want to be driving to/thru with a winter or spring storm in the area. It's position related to the rest of the topography in the area makes it....a real pain in winter.

Go south from Flagstaff and the world drops off.....it's a quick decent down to the low desert of Phoenix and Tucson.......what 1100 feet or so? OK, it's up and down, but mostly down. Prescott, "rhymes with buscuit", is still high elevation, 5600' I'm guessing. They do get snow up there, they are zone 7, 0-10 F minimum for you gardeners).

Sounds like you were getting Arizona Highways......truly a legend in magazines!

You're exactly right. Thank you for helping me remember. My 94 y.o. Grandmother now lives in Dallas so our days of receiving Arizona Highways are over.

Actually, winter here is perfect - warm during the day, cool (50s/40s) at night. Then we move into OMG Hot summer. So, we have 2 seasons :D
I just came back from Gulfport MS through Houston, and I'll take OMG Hot with no humidity over Gulf Coast humidity any day!
The humidity can be brutal. We've had a heat wave here which finally abated yesterday, but our temps were into the 100's-110, with 90% humidity. Awful.
id rather live in the extreme heat than the extreme cold and snow...we dont have to shovel that!!!

on the other hand our a/c went out yesterday and had to wait for the repairman to show up (he did about 4:30 pm)...the outside temp ..a mild 99...the inside temp..a whopping 96....

can you say NO insulation???? old houses rock

I love Cincy. It's about 2 hours south - southwest of us. I travel there frequently for work. One of my best friends is there, and will never leave. Nice, down home place to live. And... we are only 2 hours away!
:)
OMG 8O Darcy! I know it's probably a flat roof, but isn't there some way to get insulation??
Update:

Interview in Houston tomorrow. Please send good vibes!!

Unfortunately the company that is out of minnesota ...wants him to work in Willing Illinois now. That's where he'll be Friday. So, for now.. MN seems to be out. I know nothing about Illinois except that I can see Oprah there.

St. Louis Missouri may be back on the list.
Where exactly is Willing, IL?

Laurie
Oh...

I forgot that when I wrote that down, it was one of those... not sure what he's saying, but it "sounds like" this. I wouldn't have wrote city at all if I would have remembered that. I'm so embarrassed. I kept thinking, "why is someone from Illinois asking ME? where this place is?"

Okay I just googled where the company is... Wheeling, Illinois.
My search for Wheeling, IL turned up the following website:

http://vi.wheeling.il.us/

Wheeling seems to be a 'village'/outer suburb of Chicago. Might be nice--I don't know the Chicago area much (although Chicago is a great city to visit for a few days).

Sorry for strictly personal reasons that it appears that MN is out. We're a nice state. But the Chicago area isn't so far, and Chicago does have great museums and restaurants. And shopping.
Chicago area and Mrs. J's cooking??? Is there a better place? Chicago is a great place to eat and cook!

Plenty of fluffies about too........and St. Louis Sheepiepalooza isn't that far away.
