Of a feline sort...not using pan

We recently lost one of our kitties, Leo. He was 14 years old. His life long companion, Khobi (Siamese, 15 years old) has never had a misstep using the kitty pan...until now.

We've always had 2 pans. We didn't know how they arranged to use them, if they both used both, or one used one, and the other used the other. So, when Leo passed, we left both where they've always been.

All of the sudden, Khobi is peeing on our furniture. He's peed several times on our living room sofa. We've cleaned it, and Natures Miracled it, but he keeps doing it. He also peed on our bed once, but I caught him midstream, and now we keep the bedroom door shut.

I don't believe he is ill. I think this is somehow connected to his grieving. Although I feel badly for him...I CAN'T PUT UP WITH THIS!

I've thought about getting him a new pan...just for him. Think that might work?

Any other suggestion? I'm at my wits end with him.

This is quite common for cats... especially with a major change in their lives.

I would confine him to a small room with his food, water, litter box, comfy bed and anything else you feel he may need for a couple of weeks. Sometimes just a re train works and breaks the habit before it becomes too ingrained.

That was what I would suggest too. Might have to get the kittie checked out too; my cat was doing that and then I found out she had an infection.
I've not had much experience with cats, but I was wondering after reading your post "which of the two cats" was the most dominate?

Is it possible that the one you lost, (sorry for your loss) was the most dominate and now, the one you have is marking the territory as dominate thing?

If so, getting the scent of the other one out of the litter box might help solve the problem??? Hope you resolve your problem quickly and easily!
I belong to 2 cat sites  . Lots of people who know much more about cats than I do.

Anytime a cat auddenly start going outside of the litterbox, it is always recommended that the vet check them. The change could be due to stress, but stress can change the body chemistry and result in a physical condition/illness.
Once you get the all clear, then i would confine Khobi to a small room with the litterbox. You can't rush it and return him to the rest of the house until you have a consist use of the litterbox for several days.

Good luck.
Hi,

Good advice from everyone so far. I was going to mention the check up by the vet as well - sometimes cats with urninary track infections forget or appear to forget how to use the litter box.

Fostering over 30 the last year, I only had a problem with one kitten who neglected to use the litter box. The solution was to stick him in the bathroom with litter box close by. Although you aren't in the position to do this , I also placed another litter box trained cat in there with him. The problem was solved within days.

In your situation there may be something regarding the smell of the other cat on the boxes currently being used. Perhaps throw both away and start fresh may also be the answer.

Good luck to you and please keep us posted.
