Excersizing in the heat...?

Hi all;

well here in Atlanta we've finally gotten a decent blast of hot weather. Its getting up to the 90's during the day, and I don't want to walk the dogs in this type of heat. But with that in mind, they are getting NO excersize. We have a dog park that is open and lit until 11pm. I took the girls last night from 10pm til 11pm, but it was still in the mid 80's. At least the sun wasn't beating on them.... but I still don't feel great about it.

Does anyone have any suggestions about what to do to beat the heat, other than the shave down? We are doing that tomorrow
and I am still concerned that the heat is going to be an issue.

No yard?

I just make sure mine have shade when I let them out to run in the yard if it's hot out. I don't let them out in the hottest parts of the day, just early morning and then a quick pee in the afternoon and more time to run in the evening.
We just do things in the morning and late evening during the summers. The dogs sleep their days away in the lovely A/C.

If you're out and back by 10am, they'll be fine. Just make sure they have water readily available!
swimming is good exercise if they will swim. I walk mine early in the morning when it gets above 85 during the day. at 5:30 or 6 am it is usually cooler - although sometimes still humid. Also we use the basement for fetch, agility practice and tag.

Great suggestion also.

How short will their summer cuts be? Don't forget to be careful about sunburn also. I was just looking into doggie sunscreen. I don't want Abi's snout to get sunburned. The vet said I could spray SPF 15 and it wouldn't hurt her but I'd like to find something that is made for dogs.
i too am in the 90 right now i take them out very short walks durning the day .. yes in the house they are bored well the pup is. tyr a sprinkler out side they love that..
We do everything after the sun sets in the hot weather. Just have lots of fresh water available for them and don't let them overdo it. I've been carrying water with us when we walk lately in one of those bottles that have the flip out scoop to drink from. It's not exactly the driest adventure for the human but the dogs like it. :)
Now that we are hanging around 90 degrees here in Florida, I try to take the girls out in the early morning or later in the evening. If you go in the evening remember that the cement is too hot for their paws...so stay on the grass if you can. My girls sleep in the a/c during the day and around 4:00 decide it is time to go out and play in the backyard.(doggie doors). We have a Chinese Palm and a few other low plants that they enjoy laying outside under. All three of my dogs are in full coat. (1 OES 2 Aussies) I think China's coat is thicker then Violet's. I just bathed China this morning and plan to do the same to Violet tonight.

Just use common sense, water/shade very important.

I want to go about 1" in length. Chris Christiansen's Ice on Ice detangler is also a sunscreen, so I plan on using that.

I need to see if there is somewhere I can take my dogs swimming....

No yard. Its never been a problem, as we have a HUGE park a block from our home. Part of it are trails cut through some woods too, but its still feels very hot to me.... :(

I need to order some. Thanks I will try it.

Come visit!

I live an hour or so from the Fl line so I have been feeling all the horrible heat as well.

hmmm; I might take you up on that! My girls love a road trip, and I know Adam wouldn't mind having the house to himself for the better part of a day!

You may want to double check, but I believe the sunscreen in Ice n Ice is more for the hair, rather than the skin. I'm not saying you couldn't use it, but it probably won't be as effective as a dedicated sunscreen so you may have to be more careful if you're out for long periods of time.

I saw this in a magazine yesterday maybe you could look into it. They sell pet sunscreen,

www.doogles.com

I have not used it or been to the website but though I would pass it along since you are looking :)

I have been thinking about getting one of those - Is there one you would suggest - or are they all pretty much the same?

I think they're all about the same but I bought the biggest one. It's great for multiple dogs but a little heavy to carry around. I know Tammy has one that's a size smaller and looks more manageable, especially if you only have one dog to water.
I agree that swimming is great for hot dogs. But for days when we are not near a swimming hole, I got Maggie this Canine Swamp Cooler:

http://www.ruffwear.com/Swamp-Cooler-Do ... -Ruff-Wear

It makes a huge and obvious difference when she wears it. Without it, on a hot day, she can be listless and just poke around the park, hanging out at the picnic table with the people. When she has it on, she runs and plays just like she does on cooler days. Its pricey but it lasts a couple of hours and I love that she can play without overheating. I will also use it with her on hikes.

This looks interesting. Is your Maggie a full coat? Winston is and I was wondering if this would help him.
