A change of pace

Well, I was going to wait to say anything, but in light of the general mood of the day I guess I'll risk the wrath of my kindly web-designer and reveal what I've been working on the past few days, in addition to training my dogs who, apparent faux full moon <?> to the contrary, managed to all have a brain on the same day - yesterday - be still my heart. They were all quite brilliant. I marked my calender as I feel this may fall into the blue moon category.

Anyway, I've been working on a performance OES website. I started last fall, but the kind OES gentleman who offered to help me was so darn good I "volunteered" him to work on the OESCA open health registry (it really doesn't pay to be friends with me - don't say I never warned you). Which ended up keeping us both busy for quite some time.

Someone who shall remain nameless gave me a little kick in the proverbial pants last week to get back at it. Though it is still very much under construction and will take months to get where we want it to be, check out www.performanceoes.com and go the rescue dogs in performance section.

There are three articles there that are well worth the read. And see if you don't know one of the authors & dogs from the forum (no! not me!) :D

Yeah! We need to have the site just to prove our beautiful dogs are more than just brainstems! Beauty is fine, but they are working dogs and the mental ability to to these jobs must be saved and nurtured just as much as form.
lovely site!

and stop bad mouthing the crew!! they are wonderful, beautiful, intelligent dogs - who just happen to know they rule the world!
It won't open for me
loved the videos. Hmmm, I thought it was a myth that sheepies could actually go through the weave pole not only correctly but at a fast pace.

we have no proof the video wasn't altered :)
Hi Kristine, I have just visited your Website, congratulations you have done a super job, although I am not a lover of agility I enjoyed the video's and Belle seems to love it. Keep up the good work. :D :D :D

Thanks, Stewart

Those videos won't necessarily be part of the finished project, but the web designer was at the national last year and videotaped much of agility. When he got tired of me not working on the site (he's retired - I'm not  ) he just put some things up randomly to show me what we could incorporate beyond stills. I think he chose Belle's runs because he knew I brought her out of retirement to run one more time in the preferred class. She was almost ten and showing her age, but she was so happy to be out playing again. I still look at those runs and smile.

And for those of you who doubt the weaving OES   - Dennis slowed down Cruiser's speed so it would be easier to watch the action.

It's a fun site to work on. Pop in now and again when you have time to see what may have been added.

Has anyone discovered who the featured forum rescue dog is yet? Sheesh - he has his own article and in real life it's not like he can hide in a crowd!!!!

Kristine
I love the videos, particularly the one where the dog was supposed to sit on the bench and did...in my own time thanks!

Did he get Toby's "run"? I could incorporate that into my thing.

I'll ask.

I know he has Luca's. I was on the phone with him, apparently, while he was transferring it or whatever it is you do, because I couldn't get a word in edgewise he was laughing so hard (now, Sunny, he was laughing WITH you, not at you  ). I think he may be considering making the trek to MN and I think we have mostly Luca & Sun to thank for that.

I think he taped most of it though. Have you chosen your background music for Toby's video collage?

I'm thinking of the music that they use while doing the spinning plates routine. Maybe something a little bit more contemporary will hit me.

Ha ha ha...you are sooo funy...of course EVERYONE was laughing with me...glad I could help in recruiting a videographer again for agility...at least I hope he'll do that again!

Too bad he won't be in MN this weekend...Luca is entered again in Per-Novice Obed and Nov. Rally....should be a laughter filled good time for spectators!

Oh, and by the way I meant to say that Luca slides down the A-frame...my brain was apparently not working yesterday!

Since when? What happened to his fantastic summersault contact method???

I really wish I could clone Sue and send her - eh, I mean her clone - to Green Bay with you.

Good luck this weekend! We'll be there in spirit.

Liz did the stand for exam for the first time last night and only tried to snuffle through the "examiner's" pockets once. So proud <sniff>

I already mentioned to Dennis my hope to someday put together a Sheepdogs in Agility bloopers tape. I've already picked out the music it will be set to and know who to ask for contributions

Real or imagined, I think this would be my biggest concern!!!

Fabulous! Dennis never offered any theories as to why the home page wouldn't load for you. Weird, but happy it's resolved!

I asked. He says he taped the whole trial but can't tell a Toby from a teeter. OK, so he didn't say that. He said if I sent him a pic of you guys - I have stills that a Finnish friend took - he can find your run<s?> I sense it wasn't at the top of his priority list right this moment, but I'll get it for you when I can.

That means he should also have Steamboat Harry's standard run and "Gimme Tunnels" Luca's FAST run. Ah, the possibilities :P

Kristine
Great new site! Kristine, did you do this out of self defense since we bombard you with so many questions :D . The Marty and Murphy article was funny and touching, Kathy has 2 keepers there :)

No - note I said imaginary hock hairs!!

I loved Marty and Murphy's article as well, and hope his was less work to get up and going. No wonder you and Dennis had a busy weekend. :)

No, no. The idea for the site came about before I really knew the forum existed   But some of the articles I've asked people to work on do relate to some of the questions that have come up here, so that's really helpful. Plus now I have more people to ask for help and pictures and videos...

I love all three of the rescue articles for different reasons, but Marty's is the one that really makes me laugh.

Kristine
I saw your site the other day! :clappurple:
Kathy shared the link with me and while looking for a place to post an agility equipment question, I came across your post here. Congratulations Kristine! I love the videos :D

I've got a question after visiting your site...
We've decided to keep our girls close to home for the next several months so I'd like to do some agility in the backyard. Can you recommend a place to buy some decent agility equipment? I currently have a quality tunnel and I ordered a ring for them to jump through... gotta figure out where I put the instructions though
I order my PVC parts from USPlastic and get the longer pieces from Lowes for jumps and weaves.
My question is - how does one convince one's husband they need a teeter and a dog walk in a fairly small backyard?

Very cool, Jaci!!!

The tunnel is a great start.

Frst order of business: what type of equipment do you want?

Some (a lot, actually, depending on resident talent/dedication) can be made. See Kerry's post plus look to this thread for some ideas: http://forum.oes.org/viewtopic.php?t=18 ... sc&start=0

Since you're getting a puppy in th enot too distant future, stay tuned to the performance website as well. I have access to a litter of 8 week olds (in a couple of weeks :-) plus a couple of older puppies that I aim to takes some pics or ideally even videos of illustrating the kinds of safe games you can play with them too on some puppy modified very basic equipment that is very easy to make.

So are you considering competing with anybody some day or is this mainly to have fun things for them to do with you?

What's his main objection?

1) Having to mow around/move it?
2) no space left to cook-out?
3) neighbors may think you've entered your second or third childhood?

Have you considered good, old fashioned bribery or do his objections run too deep for that?

One thing I have to warn about - having just set up my dog walk (I have the old, smaller sized AKC one that is now obsolete, but still takes a fair amount of space) - is that they will play king of the hill on it if they have free access outside of training. Sybil likes to settle up there to chew a bone in peace or gnaw on the branches from a nearbye tree. It also give her good access to check in on me as I'm doing the dishes - she's eye level with the window over the kitchen sink. Though it's nice to be able to keep track of her, I find this a little disconcerting. :twitch:

A teeter - if they have access to it - needs to be propped up on both ends so they can't slam it down on each other either. If you can set it up somewhere where they don't have access other than when with you and training, none of this is an issue. But that isn't always possible.

Marty's article was less involved but I think he had more fun from a technical/creative point of view playing with yours. I sent him your article and then ALL of your pictures and said, I'll walk you through which to put where. He wanted to give it a shot though - I think he saw it as a puzzle - and you had so many great shots to pick from!!!

The next thing I knew the article was up and there were the pics and they made sense. Piece of cake from MY point of view

Plus, like he said, he really found the weight pull info fascinating.

 So sorry. I got busy and just couldn't finish a post!
I kept closing out of the screen before clicking "submit"!

Thanks for the name of the company you use for the PVC parts, Kerry! :D I'll head over to the link Kristine shared.

I was thinking they might enjoy some structured play... there isn't a whole lot of space but probably enough for a few jumps, the tunnel, the ring, maybe an teeter toter and that platform to sit on. I forgot I had some weave poles too... but just a short run. They seemed pretty stiff but I don't know what the regulation ones are actually like though.

It would be just for fun and interaction with our dogs... some will enjoy it more than others. It should be interesting to see if I can get Kaytee to jump... I'll probably have to help her over it manually to build the trust/confidence and get her used to the technique. It worked with the stairs so it seems it may work with low jumps too... get her little mind working on a safe challenge.

I wouldn't have thought of this... right away anyway until I saw it working. I have to be on the watch out for possible problems in order to keep Kaytee safe. Thanks for the info!

Wonderful! I'll look forward to see this. :D Might be fun with Kaytee too.
Kirsten ,

thanks I really enjoyed your site and now I'm wondering if Dutch who will be 2 in Oct is to old or to young to start some agility ( it would only be in the back yard just to amuse her and me :D
2 is a great age to start with (you can't start any younger with her at this point right  ).

We had dogs in our intro classes who were 6 and older so she is really not too old. and you probably have a great working relationship already.

Nothing wrong with backyard games! I bet she'll love it and she's the perfect age, really. 20 months old is exactly the age I started Sybil for real. (She did some puppy and foundation stuff prior). But she started class in January and turned two in April, so very comprable. They have the maturity you want - you don't have to worry about growth plates and things like that.

Certainly she's not too old! Belle was almost three when she started. Liz is seven and I'm just now starting to think about working more seriously with her, though I've played with her in the back yard on and off for years when I had the chance (she's not mine) and she loves it.

I wasn't finding jump parts that would allow the bar to drop if hit/bumped.
It looks like you just drill/screw these into the uprights and the bar sits on top.

Yup! Another thing you can do, which we did a lot before they come up with these strips, and/or they became more affortable, was cut flat topped PVC caps into quarters and put a screw through them like this:

Image

It's not as pretty and it does take more work, but with my triple especially it was a lot less expensive.

My buillding agility equipment is starting to spill over to other things. I spent all day yesterday building an extended gate for an area I would otherwise have had to order a custom built one for. I still need to stain it and put the hinges and latch on, but I'll take a photo of it later today. Beware! Building dog stuff can become addictive.

I'm also making a couple of tippy boards this week, so I'll take pictures of that too. Plus I finally have a barrell (thanks, Sunny!) for my chute. I've had the chute material for almost two years now....I'll add as I go along.

If others would share design and construction ideas as you go along it would be greatly appreciated. Jaci: looking forward to seeing what you come up with! You can get quite creative and that's half the fun.

Along way from my first jump for Belle: a broomstick over two overturned buckets.

Kristine
Building stuff is addictive... I should be able to do something similar with just a chop saw. We built a house but I'm still afraid of circular saws

I love the colors of your jump, Kristine! Thank you for sharing the picture! :D How will I ever settle for anything other than pretty painted wood sides? The cups that hold the bars... I like your's better than others I came across yesterday. If they aren't cut to less than half, it seems the bar won't easily drop if hit... right? Shouldn't the bar easily drop so the dog won't be hurt?

Please post a picture of your tippy board when it's done? I've never been to an agility event or training before so I really appreciate seeing pictures. I found out the ring jump was all connected so I didn't need the instructions. It had some jump bars too. Ooooh... this is fun!
