Update on Sawyers Testicle

Well, I did stop feeling for it  We took Sawyer to see Dr.Hutchison in Ohio yesterday to find out if there was any chance of it coming down, since he is now 5 months old and I wanted to know. Since this is the first time I have ever had a male with only 1 testicle decended, I completely had faith in everyones opinion(including my vet) that it was "right there" and would make its appearance before he turned 6 months so I could show him (he is just absolutely stunning!)

Well off to Ohio we went. Dr.Hutch could not feel it by palpation, so it was decided to surgically go in and look for it. Well it was there, but up in his abdomen. So naturally we had it removed. I was so sad

On the up side he is going to make someone a terriffic pet! And I have learned a personal lesson.....if they're not there by 8 weeks I won't count on them ever being there!

Amber, I was wondering about him. Thank you for the update. I am sorry he had to have surgery. I'm sure you were disapointed. He will make someone very happy as a pet and he won't know any different.

I am sorry for you - but our newfies didn't come down until 15 weeks and my OES was 10 before his came down. 8 weeks might be a safe asssumption with a few surprises.
That's exactly how I will look at it......presume it will not and be pleasantly surprised if it does. I am hoping to never have this happen again though....
I guess you won't want to repeat that breeding Amber. Did you have the boy neutered...or are you waiting until he grows a bit more?
We had the retained testicle removed, so I guess it was a partial neuter,as we left the one that was decended there. He will have the other testicle removed when he is a year old, and no, he will absolutely not be used for breeding!
OH, I didn't even consider that you would breed him Amber. I meant the original breeding that produced him...maybe that one needs a second look. I know you don't want to go through that again.
You could have had a neuticle put in next to the real one. Would a judge ever know?

Since that was the first pup to have it happen I wouldn't assume it's a problem from the pair that will happen time and time again. He is so stunning I would repeat the breeding in hopes of getting another like him, minus the retained testicle.
There are far too many serious health issues in the breed to throw away a line that has so far produced some very impressive results, because of a retained testicle in a pup who will not be used for breeding anyway.
You guys know what you are doing. At least it is something that is easily recognized...and there would be no risk of breeding that one back into the lines.

Unfortunately I am sure there are people out there who have done this, but I will never be one of them!! Not ethical in my opinion.
I'm so sorry to hear that Sawyer can't be show dog but I really think you did a wonderful thing by having the surgery done now. You know for certain that the undescended testicle will never cause this precious boy a problem down the road.

Lordy... he's one gorgeous pup.
Give him a hug for me. :D
Thanks Jaci...and it was that thought in mind as to why we took him to Dr.Hutchison to find out for sure either way. Here's a few pictures of the handsome fella when he was a little younger.

He is really recovering from the surgery very well. It was quite a long incision they had to make since they had to search for it. But he's healing really well and should be back to 100% in no time.
Very much a handsome boy!!! I love the first pic with his head tilted. :D
That's the thing... they have to "search" for it if it doesn't descend... ouchie.
But this is much better than having it be a source of malignancy years
down the road! Though he can't be in the show ring, he will make an
extremely gorgeous agility, therapy or simply companion dog :D
What a knock out...holy cow....

give him a sweet kiss from me!!
Amber so sorry to hear, he is certainly a stunner.
He sure is beautiful Amber...wish I had room for another...I'd take him in an instant. What a darling face!!!!
Amber, I'm so sorry you had to face this problem with Sawyer but at least you know he'll be healthy down the line.

OMG, he's too beautiful for words! :hearts:  Having just lost our Drez and starting to think about adopting again in a few months, my heart jut skipped 10 beats!
Aw, that sucks. He's such a pretty boy, it's a shame but someone will be getting a fantastic dog with Sawyer.

It's not funny, and I'm not making fun of the situation at all, but the topic made me giggle a little. Not something you usually expect in a family friendly forum, lol.
In the grand scheme of things a single undescended testicle wouldn't rank very high in my book as a reason not to breed either of the parents ever again. You simply take note and share the info as needed.

It's always the gorgeous ones though. I'm really sorry, Amber. Of course, he's fine. But you know what I mean.

There's a funny story, I forget the breed, but smaller, Westies maybe? Someone wanted so badly to show their puppy with one testicle that they did have a neuticle put in. So they're showing at I think it was their national specialty and the judge is going over the dog and wants to know why he has three??? Seems the other one had dropped in the interim.

My vet's the one who told me, but it could be show dog legend for all I know. Sort of a justified come-uppence for trying to cheat. Never fails to get a chuckle, though.

Mad's breeder did a repeat breeding of Mad's litter and ended up with two of the three boy dogs in the last litter with one undescended testicle each. The previous two boys were fine. I took note since they are Mad's younger siblings, but all four of Mad's boy puppies dropped theirs by seven weeks. No clue what the mode of inheritance is on that one.

Sorry you had to have it removed. He is a gorgeous dog and will make someone very happy I am sure.
Sawyer is so handsome :D
Thanks so much guys. I know he will make a fantastic pet. I am going to start looking for a home for him as soon as he is all healed and 100%. The biggest challenge has been keeping him seperated from the other dogs....he wants to play with them sooo badly, but we have to wait 7 days....doctors orders.

Kristine.....that neuticle story is hilarious!!
I was telling my husband the other day that there was a member who named their dog "Sawyer." Sorry to hear about his testicle. haha... but again, he will make a terrific pet. Wish it was our home because he's everything we want in our next oes. Someone will be SO luck.
Yes, and he has the coolest registered name that I believe Maxmm came up with. Blueshire's Lost Con Man.
Glad to hear that was what you chose!!!!!!! :D
