Leptospirosis Vaccine

I am wanting to board Tux at a Pet Resort in August for five days while we are out of town. They require all shots (of course!!!); but, they are requiring one shot that Tux does not have--Leptospirosis vaccine. My vet will not give it to him--he says the adverse effect outweigh the benefits of the vaccine. The vet at the Resort will give the single dose of Lepto if we choose to board him there--just the single, as Tux already has all the other requirements. Does anyone have any experience with this vaccine--good or bad??? Basically, I have two opinions and they are totally opposite!!! Tux has never had a reaction to any of his shots. Thanks for the help! This is always the best place to come!

if he is going to get a reaction that probably is the one he will get it to. Its often given in the 5 in one (Ithink). My former trainer/retired vet said she saw many bad reactions to it.

It is probably what caused Morgan's syst to develop at the injection site.
Do you recommend that I do not give it? Are you going to give it to Morgan again? Thanks for the quick response!!!
we have switched to a new vaccine protocol. i would do more research before i did.
Nigel had a reaction to that one...his eyes swelled almost shut. We haven't given it to him since. He was around 8 weeks old at the time.
I also have heard that the Lepto vaccine has a higher % of reactions than most of the other vaccinations. It is not included in the multiple vaccines here anymore either. Last reading I did, the vaccine was only recommended in areas with a high enough prevalence of lepto to warrant the risk.

That being said, it was included for as long as I can remember until fairly recently, and I never knew of any dog personally that reacted.

I would check with your vet and perhaps some other vets in your area to determine if where you live is a risk area. Then weigh the risk to your dog and how bad you want them to go to this facility.

Luckily, the facility I teach my classes at is being flexible. It is a dog spa with boarding, daycare, pool and rehab, as well as the training center area. I have issues with lots of the topical pesticides, and their policy is very strict requiring it. They know me, and know I use alternate preventions. And they know I am not going to raise a huge fuss or sue them if my dog gets a tick or flea. Same with the vaccinations.

Good luck. :)
I actually talked to our boardacility and they were fine wth the new protocol - even though their literature says other wise. you could try that.
