Nipping and Gumming

I just got my puppy (Yea!) So far the only issue is when he tries to i guess nip or gum my hands, fingers, or leg. It's not a bite(he doesn't press down). Is this a sheepdog herding/nipping issue or a teething issue? I replace my body parts with something he CAN chew on and tell him NO when he tries on my hands but other than that what can i do to oh nip this in the bud (pun intended  )

Thanks!

What you are doing sounds right, a lot of OES do grab people with their mouths because they like to herd their people, but they should never be allowed to get away with it as it may develop into other behaviors, or even end up hurting someone by accident.
When my dogs were puppies I would do just what you said, say No, or yelp as if in pain, and ignore the dog, and encourage chewing on appropriate things.
Congrats on your new puppy! When do we get pics? :)
I agree with everything that Willowsprite said. Also, they like a variety of toys with different textures. At a young age they are like kids, they like something for a few minutes and are ready for something else.
Congrats on your new puppy! And Welcome to the forum :D

Stormi and co.
Congrads on your puppy!! :D arent they just the best?

I have a question, when im rubbing mickey's belly he nibbles on my hand or he will nibble on his paw.is this because it feels so good 8O ?or is it another bad habit?
Another idea for those sore puppy gums is to make a knot out of old socks wet it and freeze and give it to puppy to bite on. They sell a cloth bone that does the same thing.
Thank You all for those quick responses. I'm so glad i found this place before i got Louie so i'm way more prepared. :) I'm going to try that frozen sock idea-i think he'd like that.

You know i just realized that i didn't tell you his name or anything about him in my first post-shame on me

Well, his name is Louie. I picked him up on saturday and he is 9 weeks old. He is a BIG boy. (Not overweight or anything  ). Right now he is being very good except for the aformentioned nipping. He is ACTIVE! He's sleeping right now rolled on his back next to the couch-adorable... He loves our cats but they....aren't sure what to do with him  He's doing pretty good at potty training ( I was surprised) He loves people...We(my mom and I) had him home for a few hours when my brother came home and Louie lit up like "ANOTHER person-to pet me and play with me and do all sorts of stuff-you'll see it'll be fun...."
And as soon as i get my hands on a digital camera you guys will be bombarded with a gazillion pictures. :D
Samantha is now about 11 months old. We've had her since September. She always gums or nibbles me usually on my wrist or hand, but that is her way of telling me she needs something (especially when her water bowl is empty). She doesn't hurt me, but at first I scolded her for doing it. It took me a few weeks to understand what she was doing, so now I pay more attention and find out what she needs...smart dog :?
The "only" other she nips is when my 8 yo has and friend over and I blame Sam's behavior on them when she gets excited. She has ripped many a tee-shirt  . I can't tell you how many times the boys have been told not to run and yell around the house.
I have finally got a digital camera and one of those days I will post a picture. How did you get your dog to wear a santa hat? Sam has destroyed hers (not to mention the elf hat and reindeer ears).
Hey you!!! I'm sooo excited that Louie is finally home! hooray! Not sure how I missed the post... Oh well! I can't wait to see pics! Pics pics pics!Yeah!

Karen :)
Congrats on your new puppy! We want pics, pics and then more pics!

There's not much to add to the advise about nipping. Replacing hands with acceptable chewables worked great. Make sure your puppy always has something to chew on to keep his teeth and gums healthy.

Have you tried grannic's bitter apple? We sprayed it on our hands when the nipping started to get heavy and that solved us the problem. That stopped Lennon from eating the couch and Sofa from actively drestroying the staircase rugs.
Nipping and mouthing are perfectly normal for a puppy. You may want to practice the word "Kisses". When Pooh would lick us, we'd say Kisses so when he'd mouth, we'd then say kisses and he'd start to lick instead. If he's playing rough and mouthing excessivly, definately give him something to chew on (NOT GREENIES) and he'll get the point.

9 weeks....you can still allow the mouthing, but after 14-15 weeks make sure you discourage it. Good luck!!!
