Special Puppy (Denver)

Due to an unexpected tragedy in my life I need to find home for a really lovely old English Sheep Dog puppy who is completely deaf. The puppy must go to a really good home with some experience with special needs. He has his shots and has been wormed, is absolutely perfect in every way and he comes with PetSmart training lessons (which he has responded to) -- hand signals work and he is very bright. He will be a big dog and has to be where he can be managed. If you are interested please email with details and I will call you back. He is show-quality and absolutely beautiful; he is also really a baby.He is doing well with crate training at night and would love being with a hearing dog who would accept him. He needs lots of daily attention, fenced yard, and devoted, permanent home. I will call you if you respond. I can send photos upon request. Training lessons are private and pre-paid.

If it's a show quality pup you'd think the breeder would take it back and rehome it, no?

:?:
How could it be show quality if it is deaf?
I have to wonder if the breeder indicated this on Puppyfind or some
similar place. It goes back to people being UNeducated about
buying a puppy. It's so frustrating... but it does sound like they
actually love the pup and are trying to properly place him.

If the breeder said he was "show quality", it's probably "one of those"
breeders that doesn't takes back puppies or dogs...

A deaf puppy is by definition not show quality for the simply reason it cannot ever be shown in any AKC event, not just conformation.

Perhaps the person meant to say the dog came from a show breeder in which case they have an obligation to notify the breeder so said breeder can take the dog back. If it is indeed a show breeder - more likely a BYB if there was any claim to supposed show quality - and said breeder refused to take the puppy back, she should contact Bette Green of Colorado OES rescue so she can have a little "chat" with the breeder. In any event, Bette would be a good resource. (I'm not sure if Harriet P is still active in rescue, though she is listed for Denver?)

Contact info for Bette can be found on Colorado rescue's website: http://oesrescueofcolorado.org/

I had used Colorado's online form to share the info in case they have someone that might be interested. Do you think this is sufficient?

OK, I must still be on SFT (St Louis Fun Time) because my brain can't quite grasp what you just said

You mean you notified CO rescue about the dog on CL via their online form? I guess that would work if so. Never thought about that one.

I don't know how you go about contacting people on Craig's list, or perhaps even dropping the person a line saying if you need help placing this pup you can contact CO rescue? You're more involved in the CL side of things than I am, so I'm not about to second guess you. I'm sure whatever you did was fine.

Nita/Indiana has a deaf dog she needs to place too come to think of it.

Madeline has word of a deaf pup in Ohio also. This is getting a bit scary how many are popping up right now!
I read the ad as meaning the dog was beautiful in the sense that it came from show stock and had breed type. I don't think anyone was suggesting the person was trying to rehome the puppy with the purpose of showing it in conformation in mind.

The person obviously loves the puppy but seems to be making some uninformed choices in how he/she finds it a new home.

I know of a number of reputable breeders whose dogs have almost ended up in rescue because owners didn't contact them. It's not a question of passing judgement on anyone. Sometimes communication isn't as good as we'd like it to be.

People may sign contracts when they're picking up their puppy, but a fair number of buyers don't have any recollection of what they agreed to a few weeks later. And how many of them toss or misplace the paper within a week?

That's why the first question anyone involved in rescue asks is, "Have you contacted the breeder?"

I did send a note to the owner of this pup and said that if the breeder cannot help them rehome the pup that they might try contacting OES rescue. I gave them the email, phone and website info.

Nancy in Minnesota also has a deaf girl who's adoption is pending...

This is Nita's deaf girl in Indiana-

That's a lot of deaf OESs in need of new homes... :(
any updates on this pup? has anyone heard anything?
I contacted the lady and she immediately replied back to me. So the story goes like this:

Someone locked an OES male in her back yard that was running loose. She put an add on craigslist to find the owner and she did. About 10 days ago the owner of that dog stopped by and gave her this puppy as a thank you for finding his dog. The puppy is of show quality decent but has the deaf gene in the line and so this pup is completely deaf. She has disabled children and has had a family crisis and things are changing to the point where they will no longer have time for the pup. His name is Sir Henry Cloverton, clover for short. They are working on hand signls with him and he has already picked up a few, he is also almost crate trainer she says. She wants to find him a home where he will stay forever and with someone who has OES experience. She used to have OES but because of her family situation can no longer keep the little guy. She is very adamant that they people getting the pup must neuter him so as not to pass on the deaf gene. She also sent me pictures and he is absolutely adorable and beautiful. She also says that he walks on leash pretty well and is a very docile puppy but loves to please and learns quickly. I told her that I would talk to my husband about maybe taking him on but I am afrain my husband doesnt want a deaf dog even though I would love to give a good home to a special needs pup. I will advise her about rescue but if anyone else is interested or anything let me know and I will put you in contact with her. It seems like she really wants to do well by this little guy but just isnt able to provide the things he needs due to her situation.
She said she'd keep me posted.

Wow. 8O They quickly homed a special needs dog. And it doesn't sound like the breeder had a mandatory spay/neuter contract in place.

Show quality and show quality decent can be two different things.

Not that it makes any difference... this pup needs a good home!
hi everyone,I will be happy to give him a home forever! my oes past (he was deaf)away and I have been looking for another oes with special needs,
I'll be talking to the woman tonight or tomorrow. He's 10 weeks old, is getting special training with a trainer familiar with deaf dogs. I'll let you know what happens.

All - here is the outcome for Sir Henry Cloverfield (Clover). It sounded for a bit like we would get him, but this allows her and her family to see him. So...still looking for us.

Here's what she sent me this morning (in part): "I decided to place Clover with a staff member of mine who does a great deal of work with rescue greyhounds. She really knows dogs and she came over and it was immediately obvious that the puppy was in good hands -- and we can see him from time to time and know what is happening."

Ann
Ann - it sounds like it worked out nicely. Thanks for following up on him and keeping us all posted.

Your dog will come

Kristine
Thanks for the update Ann.
Ann -- Thanks for once again considering adopting a deaf puppy from Denver. I am sorry it didn't work out but I am confident your generous instincts will be rewarded.

Best,

Valerie
I am sooo glad that they found a home.

But going back to the first page..... anyone know about the ones mentioned in Indiana and the one in Ohio? Have they been taken care of??
Hi everyone. I ran across this message board and almost cried as it described how my beautiful little Cloverton came about.

My name is Dale and I'm the proud pa of Sir Henry Cloverton, or as I have come to name him, Cloverton G Hollingsworth Von Pellerin.

During the Fall of 2008, I decided that I really wanted something to nurture. I was in a failing relationship but one where we had a beautiful shaggy mixed breed and I had decided that I wanted a similar dog. After searching and searching (and weathering a potential layoff at the company I was working at which sidetracked my search for a few months) I came across Sir Henry Cloverton listed for adoption on the Evergreen Animal Shelter website.

'Cloverton' was actually not at the animal shelter but staying with a foster family in Aurora. I called the animal shelter and they put me in touch with 'Patty' who was the foster parent of Cloverton. I called Patty and set up an appointment for a Friday night to visit and meet Sir Henry Cloverton.

On Friday, December 12th, 2008, Patty and her friend brought Cloverton to my house in Englewood. It was love at first site. I thought I would be seeing a cute little puppy and instead it was this giant fur ball of a dog but all of the heart and soul of a puppy. We bonded instantly while my then girlfriend glared in disapproval from across the house. Even though I knew without doubt that I would be Cloverton's dad, I asked that Patty allow me one night to make up my mind and I would contact her the next day with my decision.

When Patty and Cloverton left the house, and me beaming from the visit, my girlfriend Michelle questioned, "You're not really thinking about getting that dog are you?" I replied, "Absolutely!" "It's either the dog or me," she followed. She moved out a couple of weeks later and Cloverton and I have been inseparable ever since.

Cloverton is now approaching his 3rd birthday on March 3rd, 2011. He is an absolutely lovable and beautiful baby boy whose soul is that of a puppy. He touches people everywhere he goes with his amazing ability to overcome his deafness and he brings joy to all around him.

Cloverton came into my life at a time when I needed something to nurture but in the end, he's the one that has nurtured me. From devastating breakups to hard times, he's greeted me at the door with a lick and a smile and his love and devotion to me has never waivered.

Today, Cloverton knows about 14 different signs and always amazes everyone around him that witnesses his responsiveness to them. He is an absolute angel and he's saved my life in so many ways that I simply can't imagine how I was ever able to live without him.

For all that inquired and for all of those that played a role in him coming into my life, thank you. He is in good hands and I'm in good paws and together, we're two peas in a pod. He is my rock!

I'm so glad Cloverton landed in such a great place. These deaf pups steal your heart, don't they??? Oscar came to us at 10 weeks old, bilaterally deaf, and we've never looked back. He makes us laugh every single day.

Laurie and Oscar
Ok... so now I've got tears falling down my face. But I also laughed at...

Thank you for giving an extra special boy a kind and loving home. :hearts:
:clappurple: :clappurple: :clappurple: Yeah, a dog's love is unconditional, they ask only respect, food and shelter and in return they give you everything.
Oh, Dale, that is wonderful. I too have tears running down my face. Thank you so much for taking the time to write an update.

Just for the record, I would have chosen my Oliver over my significant other too  .
:clappurple: :clappurple: dan welcome and what a great story would love to see some pics of your sweet heart :plead:
Thanks for all of the replies.

I'm not sure how to post pictures of Cloverton on here but he does have his own fan page on Facebook. Just look up: 'Cloverton The Deaf Dog.'
What a fantastic update! I am so glad you and Cloverton found each other! I love his FB catch phrase "deaf doesn't mean dumb". He looks absolutely adorable and like the happiest doggie around.
Thanks everyone for caring about Cloverton. He's such a lovable dog and doing great!
