Old Age Medications for Pain

I have a 12 year old OES He is having a lot of trouble getting his back legs to work. Getting up is becomingvery difficult. Two questions what is the lifespan of an OES? And I have been told that this type of dogs gets very grumpy and snappy when they get old possibly because of pain. Is this something common of the breed or common to all dogs?

Hi Janet

Is your dog on any medications, specifically for pain?

I am going to refer you to this thread:
http://forum.oes.org/viewtopic.php?t=27

Our dog had difficulty in getting up for a long time -- he absolutely could not get to his feet when he was off of his pain medication, and that was several years ago, on his meds he was alot better.

The point is that a good vet will be very helpful here.
The Piroxicam/Tagamet, then Piroxicam/Cytotec combinations were very effective for a very long time.

The Piroxicam dosage is .3mg / Kg....

Take your dog's weight in pounds, divide by 2.2 and multiply by .3
For instance, 85 pounds / 2.2 = 38.64 * .3 = 11.6 mg.

However, we used 10mg for our 95 pound boy. Raising the amount to 13.3mg (I actually opened the capsules, split the powder into threes, put 1/3 back into the original capsule and 1/3 each into two additional empty capsules supplied by the vet) did not seem to have an additional benefit.

Seems to me that grumpiness could be a sign of pain as well, but my dog never showed any sign that he was in pain.

Good luck! Let us know. Please consider registering here as you can ask to be notified by the software when someone has replied to your question(s).

PS Nobody ever answered the lifespan question for me, either.
We had an oes for 13years before he died. He was great up till
the very end.

I've heard 13 is pretty much the life space for an oes

Our 1st oes had problems with his legs also, he also lost control
of his bowels (that last year) especially at night. He never became
mean or aggressive though.

I still miss him, :( even though we have another oes (ODO)
I hope this helps. Good luck

Hi, My Sheepdog is 11 years old. Years ago my vet told me that their life span is between 9-11 years. My girl moans alot but she is as sweet and fun as ever.
Best of luck.
Hi... I had to put my sheep dog down last week. It was a very hard decision he was 13 years old. At some point you have to figure out what is the dogs quality of life.. My dog Byron, was having trouble getting up and down and he stairs were out of the question. The longer he layed down the harder it was for him to get up.. I am sure he was stiff just like people with arthritis... My dog also started to have many accidents a day in the house and stopped eating. I can't tell you that putting him down was easy... it was heart breaking but I didn't want him to suffer.. and I think you need to give a dog back their dignity. We miss him terribly but he isn't suffering anymore. You will know when it's time, I just wished they lived longer because they bring so much joy to our lives for so long.
My dog is now 14 and has been having trouble with her back legs for about a year or so. It's just now getting to the point that she has trouble getting up. we also have to keep a depends diper on her because sometimes she loses control of her bowels. She is still eating well and seems to be in good spirits, so we are just glad she's around.
Unfortunately, I had to say goodbye to the love of my life on April 28th. My OES, Chelsea was 11.5 years old, starting having trouble getting up and walking by herself in January. She had been on preventive medication for about 18 months then we went to pain medication. We tried everything but she started appearing in pain. I always promised her that "I would hurt but she never would." I wanted her to go with dignity. Next to losing my mother, it was the hardest thing I've ever done to have to say goodbye. My husband and I were with her. I love and miss her terribly!!!

Our OES, Grizzly, is 11 years old and has had similar problems. We've seen great results from a combination of Zubrin (for pain) and Gluclosamine. For the past year he has been on a variety of arthritis meds and was still struggling and getting grumpy - after two weeks on Zubrin he is playful and moving around again.
I read long ago the rule of thumb was life span of aprox 10 years for Large Breed Dogs, 15 for Medium and 20 for small dogs.

Shaggy my OES is 15 but of very small stature- she's never topped the scales more than 55 pounds. As I adopted her from the pound 14 years ago she then weighed 35 pounds and was severely underweight. (They originally told me she was four months old but the vet said no she's definately an adult and at least a year or more) Poor thing her background was pretty horrific as she had been seized for maltreatment but her previous owners.

As to whether or not she's a purebread I have no idea although she has never appeared to be a cross other than her small stature which the vet said was due to her previous starvation. ( I have had three OES's and they were all the same in appearance except for her small size) My new puppy Merlin is 11 wks old and almost her height already. Still I think perhaps she is not 100% perhaps due to her small stature or it could be because of her earlier starvation as a pup.

Her age is very apparent however, she is partially blind, also partially deaf and while she has yet to have an accident in the house still going to the door to be let out. She has trouble going down the stairs so I carry her but she is still able to go back up herself. I have been fighting as to "When is Enough" since July...she has good days and bad days, so far the good have outweighed the bad....but I think her time with me is very short.
my vet told me the lifespan is between 11 and 13 years.
