Something to eat??

Hi All
I have done this for years with the seniors and
usually we do okay!
My big guy will not eat!
I am afraid he is in in Liver failure
His panel will come back tomorrow
We have tried everything...
Wilby was an aggressive dog that we rescued almost 8 years ago.
We had many "discussions" to get him to where he is today!

I just want my pupper to eat!!
Any great food that anybody knows of would be great!
We have already done....Chicken and rice, turkey and rice, chiken livers,
Salmon, liverwurst, etc...
I think we have tried it all!
I am just bummed as I know this is probably Wilby giving up!
I love him and am not ready for this again so soon.

I have always found that if a sheepie wont eat it is because they are in pain or feel bad. Is your baby drinking? Years ago Mums cat was ill and I cooked liver in water in the microwave then let it go cold and it ate the gravy which turned to jelly....just a thought..
Try smelly sardines and rice and see if that will tempt him. I would even try hand feeding him and treating him with cheese too just to get him to eat something.

Try also some cooked steak, fry it up and cut it into cubes and hand feed him that also. Cooked food usually tempts them with the smell.

Hope your sweetie starts to eat something, always a worry when they go off their food.
Eating may be the wrong thing right now. I'd try chicken broth diluted with water......or even rice water......cook some rice in extra water, strain and cool.

If he is drinking water, that's fine. If he stops then time to get him on an IV or at least a subcutaneous injection to keep him hydrated.
Hi Kathy-
I agree with Lisa... sardines worked great with Kaytee as did the a/d we talked about. There was a recipe we used and sardines was one of the ingredients.

See what your vet says about trying different things to get him to eat. If he has no restrictions, I'll send you my March 2008 copy of the Whole Dog Journal "Tales of a Lost Appetite" and a few cans of rabbit on Tuesday.

Have you ever fed Honest Kitchen? We call it "slop" here and my girls love it as a treat. It's a dehydrated food and you add warm water 10 minutes before serving. It's considered a raw food and we use it as a topper for the girls food sometimes... it can be eaten alone too.

Mine have to drop a few pounds ... so I have one box that make 17 pounds of prepared food if you want to give it a try. It's this variety-

Force- 21% protein
Chicken, vegetables and fruit
Grain-free, gluten-free

OR

If a higher protein level is ok (be sure to check all of this out with your vet first!), you can try this one-

Embark- 29% protein
Turkey, vegetables and fruit
Grain-free, gluten-free

Let me know. I know you're very worried about your boy. :(
Hugs to you and Wilby :hearts:
At this point it sounds like you just want to get him to eat anything he wants to. I would also try baby food without the onion powder in it, any type of wet food, veggies are good but pretty much anything he wants to eat is ok at this time. Any stinky foods they like you should try and some even as a last resort try cat food ( wet that is).
You can also try scrambling some eggs as well, that also has worked with mine if they are off their food.
Thanks for all the ideas!
I just went in to get him a bag of fluids but, he must of caught
on because, since I have been home he is drinking!! (not overdoing it, just drinking)

For supper we are going to try the sardines and rice.
If that doesn't work I will try eggs too....we did share a couple of
egg sandwiches yesterday morning. I also got some steak!

I just went to the grocery store to get him his supplies.
The baby food he sniffed and walked away! I thought for sure he would
want that, the others sure liked it....I tried Pedialyte, nope!
Funny, I got him everything he would possibly eat and I guess we will
have take out because, I wasn't thinking we need groceries!

I have never heard of Honest Kitchen...I guess I could find it at a
whole foods store??

We do keep him on a low protein diet due to his elevated liver enzymes but, right now I think anything would do if he will eat it.

I want to get these antibiotics in him but, can't do it on an empty stomach!

I have also never heard of rice water but, we will try that as well!

Thanks again for all the suggestions, I will let you know in a little while
how supper goes!
No response....
Wilby has now had 750mls of fluids.
He will not eat!
I can't get his meds in since he won't eat!
The vet recommended dextrose to keep his glucose level up!
He is being a bit of a trooper.....Wilby is a biter and he is letting us treat him...
He wants to be better!
:hearts:
He is my heart!
Thanks
Can you make an oatmeal soup and syringe it down it throat? Or cream of wheat? Granted you must know how to adminster fluids w/o it going down into the lungs......fill the lip pocket.
Anything with cheese usually get Barney to eat. Whether it's sprinkling a little parmesan cheese on his regular food or giving him some cottage cheese, or a chunk of cheddar, he has never refused cheese.

I'm sorry you're having such a hard time
Wilby is just not doing well...
He will be at the vet tomorrow to get in more fluids
and hopefully something to make him feel better....
I tried to force his meds in some baby food and he had a major nose
bleed..
I am very scared for Wilby and I am afraid it is his time
We have been blessed for almost 8 years but, it is just not long enough...
Thanks for listening.......moms heart is breaking
So sorry about Wilby.
I hope Wilby feels better soon. He knows you are doing everything possible to help him. . .
So frustrating I hope your Wilby will eat something soon. Know we are thinking of you and Wilby.

:ghug:
Best wishes to you with Wilby. :ghug:
When our last sheepdog quit eating we found that scrambled eggs (scrambled in butter) and cooked hamburger (from a lean cut) was what got him eating again. From that time on he wouldn't touch his normal dog food; we kept him on human food, essentially whatever we were having for dinner, for the rest of his life.
Have you tried yogurt, cream cheese, peanut butter or ice cream. These are all favorites of Miley's. Not the most healthies of choices but I've heard yogurt is good for an upset stomach.

Also we had a flat coat with elevated liver levels that the vet recommended milk thistle as a supplment. Just a thought.

Hope your boy starts eating soon.
Wilby has passed away...there is a thread in the Rainbow Bridge section.
If he is drinking fluids, that's a good sign.

All of the suggestions here are good ones. What I might add is this:

If you aren't already doing so, sit down beside him with something that SMELLS good that you might eat yourself, Eat some yourself, and if he shows even a tiny interest, give him a tiny bit of whatever it is: cooked chicken or chicken livers, scrambled egg, rice and hamburger (cook the rice in broth, even if it's just bullion--adds some scent). Give plenty of scratches, and pets, and very soft, soothing voice sounds. Don't make it a bit deal, although I know it's a HUGE deal to you and just killling you that he's not eating.

Let us know how he is doing. Until then, a hug for you.
