Flying?

We are trying to make some vacation plans and one of our options is a trip to Nova Scotia. Driving time would be between 10 and 12 hours but I can get a two hour direct flight. What are the feelings/opinions/comments about travelling by commercial air with your dog? Of course a sheepie cannot be carried on board with me!

Any help with this decision is appreciated.
Thanks,
Diane

Hi Diane, I travel at lot visiting shows in Europe, over the last couple of years I have been flying with my bitch and it has not affected her in any way at all, in fact it is less stress than a long drive.

If you decide to fly you need a crate that is strong enough to carry the dog, it has to be large enough for it to sit up in and be able to turn without any problems. Remember to have water available for the flight.

When you plan your journey enquire with the airline if they have a heated compartment on board the plane, (flying at an altitude of 30.000´ the outside temp is about -50° and you do not want to pick up a deep freeze sheepie at your destination), do not in any event give the dog tranquilisers as a normal dose is increased by the high altitude pressure.

If you prepare your journey well you will have no problems with a flying sheepie, although one last thing please get a routine check by your vet before the flight.

Have fun on holiday with your family and sheepie.

I would fly without batting an eye. Dogs are flown all over the place, to shows, for breeding, and in rescue. You are there to put him on and take him off. He will be fine.

Dixie flew to me...she was crated for several hours...2 hours drive to the airport, and hour waiting for the flight, then 3 hours in the air...and then right into my arms... She bounded out like no tomorrow...And still loves her crate..LOL..
As long as it is a direct flight, I wouldn't hesitate either. Great advice and shared experience from Stewart and Bosley's Mom. I would add do not feed until you reach your destination and have essentials for clean up just in case.
Nova Scotia???????

The last person from this forum who came to Nova Scotia and met me had a rough ride home......

You should avoid me at all costs!!
I'm debating the same thing. Not sure if it will be too hot when we fly in August.
Some airlines won't fly dogs during hot weather. Check before making travel arrangements. The little one could fly inside with you.......like you'll have an extra hand. The Yukster will have to go in his kennel.
Hi,
Oscar (one of my OES) and I just flew back and forth to Sheepiepalooza.
A couple of very important things you need to be aware of:
1) Check the type of aircraft you will be flying on and ask what is the max size kennel the aircraft can accommodate. OES need a large kennel and some of the cargo doors on certain types of aircraft are not large enough to get the kennel on board. Generally a 400 series or smaller kennel will fit on most airplanes. (Oscar fits nicely in a 400 series kennel).
2) In order for your dog to go as "checked baggage" the kennel and the dog combined must be 100 or less pounds (Oscar and kennel are 97.5lbs). Otherwise they must travel as "cargo" and you may not be guaranteed the dog will be on the same flight as you are.
3) Check the cost (American just raised their fees and it costs $150.00 each way to take a pet as checked baggage (at least with a large sized OES you will get your money's worth!!!).

PM me if you would like more info. I work for an airline and travel fairly often with my dogs and cats. I can give you lots of good tips.
Enjoy your vacation!
