Spondylosis deformans

I have noticed a significant decrease in Gert's mobility this past week -- reluctant to go up or down stairs and having difficulty sitting or rising and was diagnosed with advanced Spondylosis deformans yesterday. She has at least two of her vertebrae "bridged" together and from what I could see on the x-rays, large spurs have developed throughout the thoracic and lumbar area.

Of course now I'm doing research on my own and seeing that it eventually leads to paralysis because it's a progressive disease. She is on Metacam and Tramadol now plus I have started her on Arthralief and a reduced diet to help shed some pounds. I have read that water therapy, massage therapy and acupuncture can be done to help her manage the pain. Is there anything else? I have been given no time line on this disease and how much time she really has. How quickly can this disease progress?

On top of all of this, the x-rays and urinalysis showed that she has a bacterial infection as the result of numerous bladder stones. My vet informed me that she will require surgery to remove them. She is on an antibiotic for the infection.

Needless to say, I am heartbroken. Does anyone have some advice/wisdom to share?

Lis

No advice here either, but I wanted to send Best Wishes to Gert! :ghug:
Oh, no! Not the lovely Gert! She was so lady-like when we met her last year.

She and Dixie came from the same horrid place.....so I have a great interest in her health....I wonder if the years of neglect and mal-nutrician was a factor..

This is so sad...but I am glad that she has you to take good care of her..

Hugs!

I wondered the same thing yesterday as well. She is such a beautiful girl.

My heart is breaking for Lis and family.
Best wishes for Gert and her health!

Our vet recommended FlexSpur. It's a product for bone spurs and in some cases it can disolve them. Also we give our girl Mega C Plus.

If you're open to holistic type treatments you can google holistic veterinarians and find one near your area. They offer many different types of supplements and treatments beyond the traditional scope.

From personal experience with my dogs, I highly recommend those types of treatments.
