Tails: Who needs'em?

Someone asked me about Sheepdogs tails yesterday, and I wasn't sure how to answer.

I know that the dogs used to have their tails docked to show that they werre working dogs (at least that is the legend) in England, and the tradition of docking has survived since. Strangely enough, that tradition may have survived everywhere except England! I understand that sheepdogs are ok in show in England with or without tails.

Now here's the parts that I was unsure of: Is it illegal to dock the tails of sheepdogs in England, or is it optional? What are the laws throughout the rest of the EU, and the rest of the world? Is it illegal anywhere to dock tails? What about ear cropping?

In a somewhat related area, should it be illegal for people to mutilate themselves? Should there be punishment be for a parent who allows (or encourages) their teenager to pierce themselves? What about earrings?

I believe that ear cropping is illegal in some countries, I have a book copyrighted in 1976, and for breeds like the Doberman and Great Dane, that have cropped ears here in the states are all shown with natural ears and the book says cropping is illegal in Britian, tails are still shown docked.
As for piercing now thats a good question. I feel that adults should be able to pierce which ever body part they choose, but most tattoo places or piercing places can't pierce or tattoo anyone (legally) under the age of 16 or 17 even with parents consent, strange when you can take a small child to the local mall and get their ears done.At lest that is the law in MS and LA, I heard this in a tattoo business and have heard them turn away a girl 16 whose mom was with her.
Here in Australia,we have a new law about to come in banning tail docking completely for all breeds from October,(2003).I would say ear cropping is also out,as I havent seen a dog of any breed here with cropped ears for 10 years or more, until last week, when my mother and I were walking the dogs and a young dog of unknown breed came to bark at its fence and its ear were cropped. We were both really surprised to see it and on talking about it,decided its at least 10 years since we saw one.
We are allowed to have any type of piercing done, even on very young babies,I have seen virtually newborns with pierced ears.It can be done at a doctors surgery,in a chemist or a jewellers.Tattoos,I think you have to be 18.I have never seen a younger teen with any and I am sure there are plenty who would have them done if they could.

In short no, it's not illegal to dock sheepie tails in England, and I think you'll find that the UK breed standard states:

Tail: Customarily completely docked.

However, I'm not saying in any way that the above indicates my personal opinion either way on the matter - there was a similar thread on OES-L that turned into a powder-keg!! 8O

As for body-piercings / tattoos on people....in the UK you can't have the former under 16 and the latter under 18 (at least without parental consent). Apart from that, it's a matter of taste, isn't it? I was once shown a photo by one of my mates of a gentleman who had no less than FIFTEEN metal bars through his  genitals. Apparently this made him a record breaker, but consequently unable to (well, you know) - Ironically this friend worked for the impotence association.......
I would have thought, with 15 piercings there,he wouldnt be able to do ANYTHING at all, lol.Lynzi :)
