Feeding

Hey Everyone,

I was wondering how you guys feed your dogs? What kind of dry food do you buy? Do your dogs eat human food such as fresh rice, chicken and veg? Do you think real food is better than dry? At present we feed our dog Innova holistic dry food for large breeds. At dinner he gets his rice with chicken and veg. I don't know if I am doing the right thing. Never owned a large dog, and I really want him to stay healthy : )
Thanks for any suggestions,

Magdalena

wow this is a topic that always gets people going!

After the dog food scare last year we went to a grain free diet. the dogs did okay on it (canidae mostly). for many reasons we are feeding raw now and my boy has a beautiful shiny look now - and a much more settled digestive system. my girl can be picky but she is doing well too (the Newfie puppy has been fed raw since the beginning and he is beautiful).
When I was feeding my guys raw, I read not to give them grains at all...especially dog kibble. Dogs' guts are designed for protein, small raw bones, and some veggies, that's it. Their digestive system is a lot different from ours so feeding them like we feed ourselves is wrong. So either you feed raw or you feed grains and protein, but you should mix the two. I say, if your dog is doing well on what you are doing. Great, continue.

I'm not feeding raw now.

My most tender tummy dog does not like grains at all when served by themselves.......maybe she's telling me something. hmmm.

Anyway, currently I'm feeding Ultra by Nutro. It's OK for everyone but old tender tummy, but she manages to eat enough from time to time. I'm guessing it has too much grain in there......still.
Hi Magdelena,

Everyone has different opinions as Kerry mentioned. I'm thinking you're doing a good job. I'm a huge advocate of adding fish to a dogs diet. I use to feed my dogs chicken and still do, but, I notice the difference in their coat textures as well as my cats with fish oils and fish. It's good for their joints too. Every once in a while I purchase wild salmon or sardines for my furkids.

Hi,

Thanks everyone. : )

I am myself on raw/vegan diet. The only thing that concerns me with feeding raw to your pet is salmonella, mercury (fish) and other diseases that raw meat or fish might carry. Our oceans are not the cleanest of all, and the meat we buy is full of hormones and antibiotics. I know you should trust that the meat was tested, but because there is so many recalls every year I don't.
Marianne, do you cook the Salomon before you serve it to your pet? Do you guys add anything to your fish or meat servings? I am not against anything it just hard to make the right decision.

Best,

Magdalena
