Digging holes

Any advice on how to make Brutus stop digging huge holes in the ground? I think he's on his way to China!

I would to hear this answer too. I have a huge hole right in the middle of the yard.
Just a couple reasons - as I go out to fill in the latest hole in my yard!

Left out there too long. They are done pottying and playing with each other. Digging starts after that at our house.

They are hot. Dogs dig to get a spot in the cooler earth to lay in.

They just plain enjoy it! Some dogs like to dig, especially the terrier breeds.

The bored rat terrier is the culprit at our house. He is good for "X" amount of time. Go past that point, and he digs, digs, digs! Then Chewie has to check it out, and I have one with black feet, and one with a black face.

I fill in my holes with some dirt, then add in a generous helping of their poop near the top. Stomp it down good, and spread the mulch over the spot. It works - somewhat.. they don't re-dig that one, but go to a new spot when the cycle happens again.

I also totally refill in the spot as soon as I notice - they never get the chance to keep digging.
My yorkie digs. Think she is looking for toads. Summer thinks thats a good idea and she has a go. Hubby moans fills the hole up sprinkles it with grass seed. they just dig a hole further down the garden!!
dogs that like digging should probably be provided a safe digging pit, and encourage them to use that rather than start fresh excavations elsewhere
All I know is Blue likes to get under your fence by pushing on our chain link fence and I sent it up that he can not do it now, BUT if he learns to dig I AM in trouble.

This is what I would do, too. Make one area "the digging area" and let him dig away! You can encourage the digger by buring some treasure, like bones, toys etc...Make it interesting for him.

Unless he is digging to stay cool, like my Dixie girl does. Get her to a bush, or anything she can hide under, and as she likes her small hiding places, she digs herself a wee, cool bed.

Rocks are less comfortable, but she finds they will do in a pinch.

So if that is the case, if there was a nice shady area that can be hidden from the sun for him to dig up the dirt in, it might save the rest of the lawn.

OH THANK YOU !! I did this last night, it wasn't a problem finding the poop hahaha
I think he digs because he likes it...just wish he would dig at the end of the back yard instead of the front of it !

Thank you once again, I just knew I would find help here !!!
Tucker is a digger, too...in the warm weather I'll take him to the beach again. Last summer he spent quite a while digging in the sand each time we were there! Apparently it is really good exercise, great for strengthening shoulder muscles and the like. Just directing them to the proper spot is the hard part! I have also read that if you can help it, don't let them watch you do your gardening, because to them it looks like you are digging in the yard, which makes it confusing when you tell them not to.

I have four gardeners!! Unfortunately I can't stop myself from weeding whatever whenever I walk past a garden bed and all of them want to "help"!
The poop will work for awhile.....and he'll start a new hole elsewhere. My guys are older and they still get the "dig" bug. Right now two are working together to put a basement under the walk to the front door. It's a cave under construction. Guess I'd better encourage them back to the shrubs where the holes aren't as noticeable.

I remember Paige got the "dig bug" for a few days. It was like she had a troubled mind or physical problem and needed to be doing something mindless. Her digging was slow and methodical. Afterward she was back to her old self.
i saw this on me or the dog the guy made a sandbox just for the dog and let him use that put his toys in and seem to work.. but not sure if it worked after the show
