What do you pros think?

Looks like a sheepie mix to me!
Looks like that to me too... maybe OES and Komodor?
That matting on his back looked icky.

Jill... you have first hand experience with Komondors.
What do you think?

I think they shaved a Komondor! That matting on his back is normal if he's young and pretty easy to get into cords. It looks gross but once you split it up, in a couple of days, once it has time to settle down, it's exactly what you want. He's looks like a full Kom to me but it would be easier to tell if they took the picture before they started shaving! The coat texture tells a lot.
I'm no expert, to be sure, but he looks like a full blooded Kom to me, too. Now he'll have to start over growing out his cords. Poor fellow having to go through HW treatment, though. Sad

I've learned a little more about this breed from you Very Happy
I have to admit that I probably would have been one of those
people that glared at you because of your "matted" dog. Laughing Embarassed

How do you split it up... just carefully pull it apart?
It sounds like it would be a challenge...
Would have like to see a good side shot, height and weight and close up of the coat. Is the ear set lower in a Kom?

Of course it's a young dog so hasn't developed the massive body......at least these pictures don't seem to show it.

Oh well, we know that hair will grow out! May his HW treatment be successful!

His ears aren't as low as they look-- they gave him the old man bald on top look so it makes his ears look extra low!

It can be. It's strong hair but once you can break it, it tears easily. The best tool that I found (recommended by the Komondor club) is a seam ripper, like you'd use for sewing. I bought a couple of the biggest ones I could find and they worked great. Regular mat splitters dull after about 5 cords and utility scissors only last a trim or two. Sad

You'd think this "large dog" rescue who is advertising him as a Kom and charging a $450 adoption fee would know - or at least research - that first, wouldn't you?

Either way, he's lovely. I hope he gets a perfect home for him.
It looks like they do have him listed as a Kom. I think someone on here was just wondering if they were right.

Bear was actually originally listed by the first rescue that found him as an OES/Komondor mix. They were wrong. Good for us because I wouldn't have seen him (thanks, Marie!) but he almost missed out on an opportunity to placed through Kom rescue because of that listing. Had Kom rescue not already been out to his house before, they wouldn't have recognized him as a dog they knew. A Kom isn't an easy breed to own (like a lot of LSG) so having an experienced rescue person evaluating homes is a good idea. To this day, I think it was Clyde that clinched the deal in getting Bear. I'm pretty sure they weren't anywhere near as impressed with me as they were with him!

Yeah, I got that! I'm just questioning this recue org in general if they believe he's a Kom, and yet they shaved him instead of working his coat appropriately - especially given they're billing themselves as a large dog rescue.
It could be they thought it was a) supposed to grow into cords on its own so it was messed up or, b)he might be weird about grooming. It's not a difficult process but, tedious and might be too stressful for him. Plus, with a normal Kom temperament, he may not be easy to work with, especially a new person. I know most Koms don't have Bear's temperament.

Or, like you thought, they had no idea what they had until they were half done shaving and someone came in and said, "Uh, hey, could that be a Komondor?" Smile
