Can he see?

Pirate is my second sheepie. My first, Cupcake, always liked for me to primp him, and put his "bangs" in bows. My Pirate, however, is a man's man, and refuses to have his bangs pulled back. So...my question is: Can he see? My husband insists he can't, I'm hoping he can, because he looks so precious!

If he can't see, I will have his bangs trimmed, but gosh! His little shaggy face is sooooo cute!

What's the verdict?

He can see - probably not as well as he would without hair in his eyes - but unless he's showing signs that he'd be better off with the hair removed - I'd leave it like that.

Presley's fur is in front of her eyes - she hates it removed from her face. I keep Sydney's (I'm supposed to anyway) trimmed because of her deafness - she needs to have clear vision of hand signals, etc.
Deborah,

Pirate certainly can see!! While the fall looks to be quite thick to us it isn't anywhere as optically dense as you might think. Remember that you are viewing the fall from quite a distance whereas Pirate is looking from immediately behind it and very long eyelashes are keeping it a relatively substantial distance of the eyes themselves.
For an experiment take a "loosely woven" fabric and hold it up, one thickness only, at arm's length, you won't be able to see through it. As you bring it closer to yourself there will come a point where you can begin to see shapes through it and eventually get a good idea of what's on the other side. This is somewhat similar to what Pirate sees, but he sees better and is used to it so he is able to "compensate" even though you can't the first time you do this.
A few weeks ago I had Martin and Virgil out for a walk when a couple of teenage girls who were walking by were being quite derogatory about them making comments "as if they can see through that". All the time they were walking by Martin adn Virgil had a "hard lock" on them and their heads panned in unison watching these two young dingbats!!

Don't worry about pirate not seeing. But do make sure his fall is properly brushed and you keep his eyes clean from any dirt and tear build-up.
The other thing to remember is that these guys key on movement. Many years ago my beloved punk would run into little still items like ohhhh for instance.... cars and houses.... but my gosh he would never miss the big things like the leaf being blown down the road 5 houses, afield.... the chipmunk 100 yards away.... etc.
I'm so thrilled to see that we have the expertise of the Lindon crew on board! :D

Welcome!

Kristen
Yeah! what Kristen said!!!
Seriously, great to see you here!
And some of what you said was what I was going to say, but you said it so much better! LOL
Wow! The Lindon group is very knowledgable, and I'm honored to be their first post!

Pirate has walked into th truck in the garage on more than one occation. It never really seems to bother him. And he, too...sees all the tiny leaves blowing in the wind!

This is great news! I love his fluffy face! Thanks
They can see... but not that great. Just think how would you feel having to walk around with a piece of fabric in front of your face all the time. I don't think anyone would enjoy that. When Frank's hair is tied up, he doesn't miss a beat. When it's over his eyes he walks around like he has a blindfold on. Bumping into everything, thinking there's an extra step on the staircase, cracking his head on the wall, etc..... It can be dangerous! Yes, they can compensate, but if they were given a choice, I think they would prefer it not being there. I am sure it also depends on how thick their hair is on their head. Frank has much thicker hair than my last sheepdog.

Presley would much rather have her hair covering her eyes.
I was bored yesterday when my wife took me shopping and I did that experiment :? (I'm thankful the store was half empty ) I looked silly but it showed me how sheepies look at the world. You can bump into things with your face covered with stuff, but you see very well things that are moving. I guess I'll tie up Lennon's hair so he can see better.
LOL, Saul! I am still laughing! :D
When you bumped into things, did you shake your head and paw at your face like my sheepies do when they walk into stationary things? LOL
I try to keep Jack and Annie's hair up, but they will take it out themselves when they want it out. It is so funny to watch them take out their top knots. :D
Jack had his hair down the other day when my parents came over. Jack always appears to be looking at the ground, I told Mom that when his hair is down that it seems he is looking at the ground, but that is how he holds his head to see out of his hair. So, Jack brought her a ball and dropped it next to her on the couch. My mom was talking and oblivious to him, and I said "Mom, he brought you his ball, and he isn't going to quit staring at you until you throw it for him." SO my mom turns to Jack, who is now sitting about 2 foot away from her on the couch, and bursts out laughing to see this ball, and a big, hairy, Jack sitting next to her staring intently at what my mom thought was just the ground, so she bent down and saw that he was infact gazing intently at her, waiting very nicely for that ball.

Stormi and co.
My aunt had a bloodhound, Madison, who had such badly drooping eyes (it had been suggested she get plastic surgery but my aunt said if anyone was getting plastic surgery in the family - it was her! ) and when she was having difficulty seeing - see she would tilt her head backwards all the way so she was looking at you upside down! She was a character!

Now I am still laughing at Saul's and Stormi's Mom's stories.

I love the long hair look, but I would miss ol' blue eyes. Besides Henry walks into walls even with it cut short. One night I was sitting in the living room and he just walked into the wall next to the kitchen door. He wasn't running or pursuing anything, just walking around. Since he can see me drop a sliver of cheese at 20 feet and a moving animal at 100 feet, I am pretty sure his eyesight is keen. Sometimes he is just a moron.

I can't even imagine how empty my life would be without my love puppy. He is an endless source of amusement not to mention those puppy kisses.
