Update on Barney's itchies

So it's been about 2 1/2 weeks since we took Barns to the vet (again!) to see about his itchies. He was given a course of prednisone (he turned into the great gray and white pee machine!), a course of antibiotics, new food, and a medicated shampoo.

Barney has not worn his cone AT ALL in days!! He is SO happy. Because wearing the cone makes it hard to play with his stuffies, in the last few days he's taken to grabbing them and relocating them all over the house. It is really cute. He doesn't really play with them, but he's just happy to be able to reach them with his mouth!

He looks SO much better. The fur on his belly is starting to grow back and his skin is light pink/whitish instead of the hot pink it had become.

He just finished his last prednisone on Sat or Sun and I'm just SO worried that he'll start licking himself again. I've seen him lick a few times already.

Oh, and it was so funny. On Sat morning we gave him a bath with the medical shampoo. We did it in the driveway with the hose. Our neighbor was out washing his car. It was just funny that he was washing his car in the driveway and we were washing our sheeps...

YEY!!! Thats my boy! Im glad he has his stuffies back....i can only imagine the withdrawl he went thru!!!!!!

you didnt use a squeegie or a shammy on him did you??
That is great news! :D

LeAnne washes Clay on her driveway too - it stops traffic on her street....
My biggest fear was also, what happens after this stuff wears off?. I hope Barney has more relief like Yuki did!
Hurray for Barns!! I hope it lasts this time and that the food does the trick keeping the itchies away. :D
He's starting to chew again
 Darn it.

That's because the predisone has worn off. Sorry to hear he has started again. :(

Have you thought about seeing about alternative treatments for what is happening? Like a holisitic vet or a natropath that might help with a solution after conventional approach has not really helped. Just a thought there. Sometimes switching over to a different treatment can help, I think personally they build up a resistance to Anti-biotics and even the predisone if they have had it on and off for awhile.
oh no, that sucks!! maybe you can try those pills someone once posted that are supposed to help with allergies. Some sort of cure all, any allergy pill. It was some long running thread.
So sorry to hear this, hope you can find something to give Barney some relief
Have you had him tested for inhalant allergies? Prednisone will help in some cases but it is not something you'd want to have him on long term for itching. Steroids don't cure the problem. But they are very useful when used properly to help in certain illnesses. If a dog has inhalant allergies their reaction is itching & chewing rather than sneezing like humans. Essentially, they are itching from the inside out. Benedryl can help short term. But to really have the dog be able to live comfortably, they need to build anitbodies up againt what they are allergic to. To test for inhalant allergies you would need to see a veternary dermatoligist (sp)/allergist. Most specialists in this field will tell you they have to be 2 years old before they exhibit signs of having an inhalant allergy. This is because they feel they need to be exposed to all 4 seasons at least once. This is true unless the dog is severely allergic. I had a girl that exhibited these symptoms at the age of 7 months. They finally tested her for inhalant allergies at the age of 14 months only because they had exhausted all other routes! A skin punch test came back postive immediately for house dust & house dust mites! With a course of treatment she lived an extremely healthy & comfortable life. She grew her coat back within a year & I was able to get her back into the show ring & finish her championship title as well as train her to receive her CGC & CD in obedience.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Yes, I'm going to look into 'other' methods now to see if that'll help. I was really hoping that all it would take was a jumpstart from the prednisone and meds and the change in diet to a higher quality, fewer ingredient food. But that's not working.

If it doesn't get any worse than it is now, then I think I'd be fine with leaving him be, since it's not a lot of licking or chewing (yet). But the second it accelerates, I'm definitely going to do something about it.

I really don't remember it being this bad at our old house, which was only a few miles away. I'm still hoping, too, that part of this is the new environment and that he'll get used to it and once all the construction dust goes away he'll be fine.
food can be the worst issue. and from what i understand allergic dogs can develop allergies to foods all the time. my trainer has raw fed dogs that have done fine on lamb and then developed allergies to it.

good luck this is a difficult issue to deal with.
Cone is back on
Oh noooo :(
I'm so sorry.
These darn allergies anyway...

Personally, I'm thinking environmental allergies...
Me too. I was hoping that all we did from the last go-round would be enough to help him, but now I'm going to have to look into all those other suggestions that people have given. *Sigh*...

woohoo! Sexy! 8)
We need a pic of Barney standing with his paws up on that railing with no cone on.

Then you can just publish the cone on or the cone off pic.

Sorry, maybe not funny....
sorry :(
