Pet Stores - Beware!

I've recently heard from people that have purchased deaf OES puppies from petstores and found this site for New Jersey Consumers. It's eye opening.....

http://www.njcapsa.org/

I wish every State had something like this and wish EVERY person would read it before ever considering buying a puppy from a petstore.

Be aware that several "internet" breeders that advertise through some of the sites get their dogs from the same place as Petstores!

I went on the website you cited. It breaks my heart to think that Henry's mother lives [lived?] like that. According to Henry's foster mother Fresno is the puppy mill capitol of California and Fresno is where Henry was found. My poor baby was likely born into a puppy mill, and then spent his first year with people who didn't love him.

How does a dog get over that? I am not sure Henry will ever fully recover. I often wish that Henry would stop being suspicious of me. I hear about dogs who are grateful to be rescued--not Henry. After 2-1/2 years, he still has trouble coming in the back door some days--I think he was punished for trying to enter his original house. He hates being held by the collar, he came to me with a neck rubbed raw by his collar--I assume he was kept chained. When I got him after three weeks in foster care he still had a bright pink scabby neck.

And he looks at me suspiciously. Even after all this time with an extremely stable routine, positive reinforcement training, and lots and lots of love, I am not sure Henry fully trusts me. He gives me the oddest looks sometimes. I try to make sure we have a little smoochy time when he looks at me suspiciously so I can tell him just exactly how much I love him.

People who operate puppy mills should be forced to live in one of their puppy mill cages and treated just as they have treated the dogs. No dog should ever have a life like Henry's first year.
That breaks my heart about Henry! I hope that he'll realize he's safe one day (soon!) and never look back. Just keep reassuring him as you are! The best thing you can do (besides taking care of him and loving him as you do!) is to educate others about the horror of these puppy mills.

I was on one of the websites that lists "Puppies for Sale" and the first listing had a picture of the dam doesn't look like a full bred OES. Never mind she's black - which by the age of breeding - they should have their adult coat and I doubt it would be that dark. The other listings had several "MOSTLY WHITE" OES that I would bet my bottom dollar that they were MOSTLY DEAF too! OES aren't supposed to be ALL white! It sickens me that these people get away with this!  The illnesses and temperment problems these dogs have are heartwrenching for these families.

That's a great site Kristen. I especially want to note all the bad things written about Lambriar kennels that does sell OES's. Maybe Ron can put something on the homepage of OES.org that links to the awareness of puppy mills since his website ranks so highly on search engines when you look up sheepdogs. If it helps discourage people a little from buying from pet stores that would be enough.
My baby girl Drezzie came from a Lancaster County puppy mill. The original owner bought her from there. I'll have to check my records to see exactly where she came from. I guess all things considered, I should consider myself lucky that her hip dysplasia is all that seems to be wrong with her. Don't get me wrong - that's enough, but that's all.

Last year my son was in a local mall and called home all excited to tell me that there was a sheepie puppy in a local pet store. I told him to just leave the store and not look back. It was very hard for him to do. It was also very hard for me to not just hop in the car and go rescue the poor baby.

The pictures on the site are deplorable. Who can be so unkind and uncaring towards another of God's creation? Their time will come.

Just in case someone thought this was all a bunch of malarchy....

My neice's mother bought her a maltese puppy from a local petstore here in RI    and the puppy is now fighting for his life suffering with pneumonia! He weighs all of 2 lbs and is very ill.

My neice has been through alot this past few months - including finding out that her Golden Retriever (also bought by her mother at a petstore!  ) has lymphoma - so needless to say - she doesn't need this on top of everything else (and the Golden doesn't need a sick puppy in the house either - as she's trying to fight for her life and going through chemotherapy).

I don't understand how people don't get the message about Petstores & Puppymills - it infuriates me!

If you could send some white light to my neice and her dogs - I'd appreciate it!

Kristen,

I am so sorry that your neice is going through such heartbreak right now. I never will even go into petstores. I have the thinking that I should rescue them all, so I just stay away. I don't understand why AKC doesn't step in and make that a law or rule that says that breeders can't sell to pet stores.
I hope her Golden and maltese get better soon and are playing and bouncing very soon. They are in our prayers.
