OK, here it is!

The course will have 8 stations - plus a "start" and "finish".
I will give you 12 stations - 8 of which will be on the course.

The subnovice signs to pick from (ie: your homework) :) are -

#5 - right turn
#7 - about turn right
#8 - about U turn
#10 - 270 degree left
#14 - call dog front, finish left, forward
#20 - moving sidestep right
#21 - spiral right, dog outside
# 24 - serpentine weave once
#27 - stop and down (old moving down)
#28 - halt, fast forward from sit

diagrams? pictures? descriptions?? helpful hints?

Not so relevant for sub-novice in St Louis, but I stewarded a rally trial yesterday. Wanted to see the new AKC rally regs in action, but I was working the score table so didn't get to watch much.

Where are you supposed to perform the sidestep right relative to the sign now?

Kristine
Good grief! 8O I'm gonna have to do homework??

We have to practice so we'll at least know what the terms mean.

That's just it. How would you know if nobody told you?

Oh, Daaawwwwn.... :D

I've never been real excited about the AKC regs in that regard - they presume some familiarity with terms a complete novice might not yet have.

Practice is optional - really. The signs are simple, and I plan on going over all them on Sunday anyway. Just thought you over achievers with lots of spare time would like to check it out........ :sidestep:

Kristine - the sidestep right: - the sign is placed directly in your path now. You need to "sidestep right " in order not to walk on the sign......hehehehe. One change that actually makes sense! :D

I am not a good enough computer nerd to post the actual signs. If you go on the link, and click on "AKC Rally Regulations" - you will get the pdf version of the rules and signs. The signs start on p.150, or also p 10 of the rally section - in the very back. It is 168 pages total. All the regualar obedience stuff is 1st - just skim by to p.150.
It is under the tab of "Index, signs and descriptions". There are good pictures and descriptions there.

I hope this makes sense - I have worked my 40 hrs of nights since Friday at 7pm and I am kinda mentally fried.....
Dawn...

Thanks for the link. I printed the Rally portion of the booklet and am going to practice it this weekend.

I just hope I don't embarrass Heart and Pearl since I get confused on right and left ( I have issues from being left-handed in a Catholic school in the 60's and the nuns trying to make me right-handed....didn't work. just confused the heck out of me~~~~~~~~~..     ) (sooo glad there will be pictures to follow    )

Thanks, Dawn.

Of course, that's fine and dandy if you've taught your sheepdog to "tuck" or "get it in". All others, step really far :sidestep: because otherwise your average sheepdog might feel compelled to just run it down

A couple of springers yesterday took a good, long look at the cones and the sign holders ("something to retrieve, please?") Sheepdogs are more of the plow it down variety.

Of course, Sybil may consider the signs snacks and the cones something to pick up and charge at her brother with.

Endless possibilities with all that equipment just laying around

OH MY Diagrams please !! I need to get guinness out and practice. We did this once and did fine (months ago last oct to be exact) but I have not worked with him in a year and I am afraid it will show................. Oh well it goes for a good cause While everyone is laughing I will pass a hat for the extra entertainment :rimshot:

Plow it down - been there!!

Chewie does a mean right sidestep - thanks to his "gee over" mushing command! He weaves the serpentine to "gee" and "haw" too. I love when commands are versatile and help out in other places besides where they were originally meant to.

Don't worry - you get the diagram before you have to do it. AND, you get to walk through it without the dog AND ask questions before you go. This is true in a real rally event too - so it really is fun! :D
Oh that's good, Dawn. I really am so visual in my learning that it helps me tremendously to SEE things first. :phew:

This will be fun. :D
I am sitting here laughing reading this. Gee Haw never thought of teaching Miley these to do Rally but on the Side Step Right - I move right and she looks at me like " Why are you over there Mom" Clearly we are not on the same page.

Also - my major problem with Rally is me - I can't tell my left from right either - at least not when walking on a rally course and nervous. I do just find in my back yard with no one around.

Kristine - where were you at yesterday? - If you were in Jefferson I am going to be sad. I wanted to registered but I goofed up and did not register in time. I was dissappointed but I figured out what I did wrong. So I am looking at the events in Ixionia? I am trying to figure out for Waukesha.

I am having a heck of time with Miley at my last 2 rally classes. We had one tonight and she would not even heel for me. I can't figure out what is going on. I think I am forgetting the key ingredient - to laugh at ourselves when we make a mistake and have fun.

Thanks for letting me vent.

See, what you wrote I think I am forgetting the key ingredient - to laugh at ourselves when we make a mistake and have fun. tells you all need to know if you want to do performance with Miley

I ran Sybil through a rally course for the first time this past week. Since all they had was an advanced course, we went off lead and she did a remarkably good job.

THIS IS AS DECEPTIVE AS HAVING A BAD NIGHT.

I just got off the phone with Judi and remarked to her that Syb had done a decent job, but I've been in OES long enough to know what this means: they're setting you up!!!

My agility instuctor quickly figured out that if we were struggling with one thing on one day, not to get hung up on it, because she'd do it perfect the next time, and find something else weird to do...

More seriously, the inattentiveness when heeling could be related to her recent loud and unnerving experience. Just stay positive, laugh as needed, and keep working on it. She'll get it.

One of the breed's top obedience competitors can't walk in a straight line...We've gone so far as to suggest she toss back a stiff drink before she walks in the ring in the hopes that being somewhat intoxicated might have the reverse effect on her and straighten out her heeling pattern. She may be taking us seriously because she insists she's naming her new performance puppy Mojito. Mojo for short. Me? I think she's jinxing herself.

Exhibit A: Sybil. 'nuff said.

As for where I was - an English Springer specialty held at Western Waukesha Dog Training Club (Ixonia). , so we wouldn't have run into each other there. When is their next allbreed trial? I probably won't have anybody ready to compete in time, but I plan to have Sybil ready for rally at Waukesha this summer...Will keep you posted on that and how to enter, plus once I'm back out there competing, I'll be getting other dogs ready and the second half of the year I should be at a fair number of local shows for one reason or another. Possibly breed, since i do have to finish her sister. I always like to try to enter obedience and/or rally in addition to breed if there are shows that offer both. More fun that way.
