Wilby and his bloody nose!

Just wondering if anybody as any experience with dogs having bloody noses??
Wilby totally has my heart but, we are at a tough decison.
He has had a few nose bleeds in the last few months (two in the past two days)
We have had Wilby for 7 years, he is 11 y/o now..
Briefly...we picked up Wilby that was going to be euthanized for aggression. He did bite me when I first picked him up.
At the time Marty had 3 kids living here and he was great with them.
He has to be sedated to groom and we do blood work on him every 6 months when he is sedated.
Wilby can be a bear but, he is absolutely my man and a doll to me!
(he loves the other dogs too)
My question is...should we sedate and do xrays or try to treat symptoms?
He is on a Liver Diet food as his enzymes were elevated.
He is slow to get up and down.....
I am just not sure if it is fair to him to do further testing
He is on Deramax, Cholodin, and tramadol(I am wondering if that is a blood thiiner)
This is only to ask opinions....the vet reccomended the work up...which would be fine if I thought it would be easy for him!
Thoughts??
Thanks
Kathy

Not good. Nose bleeds may indicate some serious problems; tooth decay, leukemia, hemophilia, mouse killer poisoning (Warfarin), nasal tumors, Aspergillosis, canine von Willbrand, and Erlichiosis.

Since the dog is also being treated for liver problems, that may be the cause. I'd talk to the vet about these other problems.

Nose bleeds are very scary as well as messy. Your pup is older and prone to more problem. Remain calm as you apply an ice pack.....and of course don't frostbite the nose.
Hi,

I haven't seen Wilby but am only going through what I experienced with my previous girl Shaggy and your posting of nosebleeds. It rang a bell with me as Shaggy had frequent nose bleeds.

Please ask your vet to check for Immune Deficiency Thrombocytopenia.

If Wilby allows it - press on his gums with your fingers and see how quickly it turns back to pink from white. You could try it on yourself first to see what I mean. If the gums stay white - mention this to your vet as well.

I'm praying all is well with Wilby and keep us updated.

Marianne
Thanks so much!
I was able to press on Wilbys gums...sometimes he lets me do things!
His color came right back and he does not have any apparent bruising!
My fisrt sheepie Mandy had Immune Mediated Hemolitic Anemia and seconcondary Thrombocytopenia.
I will talk to the vet tomorrow, I am just not sure I want to sedate him for anything!
I think with him it is all the meds he is on but, he cant walk without them!
Another odd thing he is doing is growling at us when he is eating...which he is not really eating that well...he picks!
(he has never done that since his first year here)
Tonight I boiled him turkey and rice and he ate like a champ!
He does not like his pills....maybe he knows something I don't!
He used to eat them fine but, now he is getting picky!
Wilby even spit them out of cheese!
I am worried about my old man....he is only 11 but, he is a big boy!
It is so hard to explain how much I love him, I know you can understand!
Hugs
A pill poofer! Yep, had those. Good you found he's just not liking his kibble.....is it too hard for him to crunch these days? For my picky MO I mix cooked rice and a meat (like turkey) along with her kibble and then put the pill in the mess. Lately it has been going down.

Pill poofing is frustrating. May be time to try some cream cheese, butter, or PB. Try alternating. Don't give up, you can bury it in a meat ball too.

I've even tried shoving it down their throats but MO's throat is so small I end up scraching her with my nails (short nails at that!). Plus she must have a special pocket for catching the shoved pills so she can spit them back at me. Those are not good days.....I usually win with something unusual that catches her off guard.......oh yum, corned beef.....argh you stuck a pill in there......oh well.

Remember the meds can change his personality a bit. Be understanding and respect his space. Poor guy.
