Hey! You guys are suppose to tell me when YOU knew you were grownup now!
When I uttered the words...."I can't wait until YOUR child acts this way when you're the mom."
When my hubby and I took out a loan to pay bills for his mom during her divorce. And on a couple of occassions since then when we have helped out with the finances for both sets of parents. But then again we have always been told we act like an old married couple, very grown up and comfortable with ourselves and each other. Sometimes I wonder if I missed anything by not being a carefree youth, I've always been a worrywart. Oh well....
Readers Digest once had a story with that very title! The author said he knew he was grown up when he was able to clean the gunk out of the sink. As a child, he was amazed his mom was able to pull gunk off the plug when draining the dish water.

As for me, I moved out when I was 19, I knew I was growing up when I could touch raw meat (hadn't done it previously) and when I cooked my first Turkey dinner- (that came some years later.)

Marianne
I stopped growing up by age 12. :D
when I thought salads were delicious.
When I started using kleenex instead of my shirt sleeve. I was 38. :P
when it happens I'll let you know :)

LOL - I was sleeping!

I think when I was 22 - married and just gave birth to preemie twins. I was always fairly serious and as I was the oldest - "you are the oldest, you should know better!" was constantly told to me. Guess it worked.
When I realized I could buy a WHOLE POUND of Fannie May and eat it myself. I still haven't though.
I am the youngest of 3. My brother is 15 yrs older than me, my sister is 13 yrs older. I was an "oops."

I knew I was a grownup when I realized that even though I'm the WAY youngest, I had been married the longest! Brother is on his 3rd marriage, so is sister. I'm still on my first, 32 years later.
I realised I was grown up when I had to iron my school uniform at 9 years old because mum was drunk

Still- I turned out OK :D
I only grew up very recently. I had 38 years of fabulous childhood. After I married Tim and moved to Arizona, I realized that someone had to be the grownup in this relationship. So now I have to say things like "no, that's too expensive" and "we should be saving more money". I miss the days when I didn't have to worry about adult stuff.
...got my first social security check.
I haven't had that moment yet.

Probably the closest I have come is everything involved in taking care of Izzie, but she keeps me young at heart

I'm not sure what it will take..... :lmt:
everytime i come close to one of these moments i call my dad and ask him what i should do :D
I used to wonder when I was I ever going to grow up and stop crying when someone hurt my feelings? - but I never did because I still cry

Yea...me, too
Oops I just re-read what I wrote... thanks for understanding what I meant Paula & Debcram
I think it was when I said to someone, when I was your age. I wanted to cry.
When my boy said to me "where you going mum?"
And i replied "there and back to see how far it is"

His reaction was the same as mine all them years ago when my mum said it to me..

My reaction was "when did i turn into mum"
and "how did that happen?" :? :?
When I started repeating the same "Quotes" as mum use to say to me to my kids 8O

Like'Wait till you have kids and they speak to you that way'

Ooooh what goes around, comes around, amazing what rubs off on you as a Kid, I swore I never would use the same nagging sayings, now I am repeating what she use to say to me to my kids 8O

(Still only 21+++++++++++++ though :P 8) :lol: )
when I realized I had to dust
Just recently when I looked in the mirror and thought OMG I am 40+ and way older than the people I work with Until recently I felt like one of the gang. Up until that moment I never felt like an old lady... I have always felt young.
sorry i think i will never learn or grow up
I looked in the mirror a few years back and saw my Mother
my first year away at school with room-mates...yelling at them to turn the lights off, flush the toilet, wash the dirty dishes and vacuum... 8O

it was a very very sureal experience....but i grabbed hold of it and have never looked back
When I started listening to "Talk Radio".

Ditto!! The best is the threat to turn the car around.  My kids say, "Okay, lets go home." I am usually taking them to my parent house so I can get a break for a few hours.... no way will I actually turn the car around.

My son calls me Old Lady.
Luckily, I have my daughter to keep me young, at least in my mind.
She is always telling me how beautiful I am. She is a great boost to the ego. 8)

I would never threaten my kids that I hope their kids are like them.
Because somehow I ended up with kids that are exactly like my sister, who was a MONSTER!! She doesn't have kids, but if she ever does I bet they will be good kids, like I was. How I ended up with her curse is beyond me. I was the good one. At least until High School.

that doesnt make ya grown up!! just informed
I don't remember a time when I haven't felt more "grown-up" than a lot of my peers. However, I realized the level of my Mommy responsibiilty about 6 months ago. I cried and worried all night long when Foz was eating his feet to his allergies. I felt that it was my responsibilty to "fix" that problem.
I remember a day when I felt for the first time that I couldn't just walk away from a job when I wanted to.

All my life up until that point I could just say "aww the heck with this" and walk out. But then I had responsibilities that needed to be met.

I guess that counts.

Funny thing is, I just realized that I don't remember when that day was anymore! I don't remember which job I was at, nor whether it was because I rented an apartment and had a car loan or because I bought the house and had a mortgage, but it was one of the two I guess, probably the mortgage.

So not only do I have a point that I realized I was all grown up, but I also now have a point when I felt like I was over the hill: Right now.

Thanks a heap!
I realized I was a "grown up" when I met Marty!
Just kidding..
:D
I am sure he could slam me on that!
When did I grow up??
I used to go out alot!
Now, I have figured out I have more fun watching my dogs play!
I have turned down after work drinks to come home to the doggies many times!
Does that make me old or smitten?
Hmmm. ...either way I am not geting any younger!
When your Mom tells you, "You are not getting any younger"
You are in trouble!
This morning...at 1:00 am with a frantic phone call from my neighbor. Her husband just had a heart attack. He's my age...38.

His prognosis is very poor right now.

I thought of this post later while in the waiting room. Now, right now I most definitely realize, I am a grown up.

We will pray for you and your friends. When you look death in the eyes its a scary thing. But, there's always hope, even unto the end.
I think that moment came for me the first time I had to work all summer after graduating from college. It was the first time in my life I didn't have "summer vacation". I remember thinking "this stinks!!"
I still don't feel like a grownup. But I guess I do when I think about the past and what I used to do and how I used to react to things.

I was watching something on tv (I think it was E's Wildest Spring Break Videos--yeah, real grown up! ) anyways, they were showing videos of crazy kids in TJ (Tijuana) and I was like, ahhhh, I can't believe how long it's been since I got to be crazy and have fun and go down to Mexico on a whim...I felt old   :D
