I just got Chrissie spayed and she's traumatized!

I know this is the OES forum but you all have such vast experience with dogs in general I'm hoping for some insight.

The surgery was for my Lhasa Poo, Chrissie. The operation was Monday and I brought her home Tuesday morning. She is a high energy, sassy baby girl and she's barely moved from the couch for the last 3 days. She whimpers when I pick her up and cries piteously when I walk out of the room, not to mention that I'm having to coax her to eat.

The incision isn't swollen or red and she has managed to go out to do her business, but she was never this needy before, in fact, exactly the opposite. She's always been a very independent little girl. Now,if she's in the bedroom and I go downstairs for something, she stands at the top of the stairs and trembles, then cries until I come back for her. She doesn't seem to be in pain, much more comfortable than she was the day after the surgery, when even trying to pick her up made her groan in pain.

She's a puppy mill rescue and it took more than a year to get her socialized and not fearful around people -- She had gotten to the point where nothing scared her and she adored everybody who walked into the house. I feel like we've just gone back to square one. Has anyone else had this experience with a surgery/separation?

Oh, poor Chrissie!

I hope (and I think) that she'll be just fine in a few more days. She had a big event.

Give her a gentle little hug from me!
My maltese was the same way after surgery. She was fine once she felt better and was healed and I hope for the same for your little dog!! Poor thing!

Do you have to go back for a check up (stitches out or just a once over)? If so, maybe you can mention it if she isn't already better.
No -- No follow up. The stitches are on the inside so they released her with no additional visit required - Also no pain meds, which I'm wondering about......... How long did it take for your little one to feel better? Everything I'm reading says within 48 hours, and this is the 4th day.
It took a week. She's so sensitive but otherwise extremely independent as you describe yours. She only comes to me when she's in pain or scared.

We weren't given any pain meds for any of our 4 animals. If you're worried, I honestly wouldn't hesitate to call the vet just to tell them. You'll have to give us an update, but I got a feeling she's just a little uncomfortable still. *fingers crossed* :)
Ok -- That makes me breathe a little easier. :phew: I am going to call the vet in the morning.....She had all her boosters (including Lyme vaccine) AND a microchip, so I guess she has the right to feel lousy. Still, I can't get over the guilt I'm feeling right now. I know it was the best thing for her but.......gee whiz.
Rosie took a good week...she barely moved and wanted to be with me the whole time...I carried her outside...she got up one morning a week later as if nothing happened and was back to normal...come to think of it that's how I felt after I had surgery...one day can make such a difference!
