Aggression

Hi all,

I have had an OES since I was 20 (that would be about 20 years ago). I now have a 1 year old son. Recently, Zoe snapped at my son and hurt him pretty bad. Zoe has since gone to live with my parents. How do I avoid this in the future?

Hi,

I'm sorry this happened to you and while it's difficult to say what the anacedent was to what happened before the snap - I'll relay some info that I used to give in my "Bite Free" info sessions for the Humane Society.

The majority of those that get bitten are children. It could be that the child being at the same level was staring at the dog and misinterpreted by doggie to be a direct stare and thus a challenge. It could be the child grabbed the dog and held it's head or numerous other things. It could be Zoe was poked or stepped on and it happened so quickly what was the cause for the snap was missed. It's too difficult to say what exactly happened but most often children are on the same eye level as the dog and will unknowingly stare into a dogs eyes. There are numerous other factors which could have come into play so it's difficult to say what caused Zoe to react like this.

Has she had any incident at your parents home?
