Steroids and excessive thirst

I know that while they're on the steroids it makes them super thirsty. My question is, do they need all that extra water? I'm trying to regulate Barney's water intake so we don't have any more accidents, plus the fact that the second I refill his water bowl he downs the whole thing without coming up for air (which means most of the time he pukes it up).

So I'm just wondering if the steroids make them thirsty and they need to have extra water, or it makes them thirsty and they just WANT extra water. I definitely don't want to be holding anything essential back, but it's gotten a little ridiculous at my house...

Oscar takes pred for his IBD, and my vet told me that he doesn't need the extra water. I not only limit how much water he gets at a time (8-10 oz) to help with the puking, I limit how many times per day. If he seems really thirsty, and he's recently had water, I give him a few ice cubes.

And I really watch how much he gets in the evening, because, if I don't, l'll get the cold nose in the face at about 3 a.m. for a potty trip outside.

Thanks! That was really helpful.

And I got the cone AND nose in the face at 2am last night
Ouch! At least Oscar is cone-free at the moment.........

See, I would think they may not NEED more but NEED more to feel normal.

When I was on steroids, I also wanted more water. If I didn't, my heart was always racing and throat was so dry and needed to be coated w/a liquid.

I do think they probably drink an excess in one sitting each time they go for some... I'd hate them to really feel uncomfortable but have to suffer knowing what it's like to feel that burning or have your heart race (which yuki's did) and not have something to make you feel better.

I think the 2 a.m. potty trips are just preparing you for the 12, 2, 4, 6 a.m. feedings you will have in a few weeks.

Well, and that was why I was asking. I just didn't know if they wanted or needed or a mix of both. I'm not wanting to keep necessary water away from Barns, but I also want to keep some sort of schedule going, so I was mostly thinking about how I always just automatically refill his water when it's empty--and when he's drinking these massive amounts, it was being refilled a LOT. So I'm just doing a moderation thing...still giving him water (of course!), but not filling it to the brim or rushing to refill it all the time.
What about freezing his bowl? That way he can't rush through it but there's always something there for him.
I know that when I am on steroids, I always want a drink. Don't really need a gallon of water but a little something absolutely!
I think part of Barney's problem, too, is that he really only likes to eat or drink when we're right there and it's meal time. His food and water are always left out, but he really mostly drinks when he's eating, so I think part of it is that he gets SO thirsty and tries to make up for it all at once
Our 14 year old dog Chevy had a stroke and vet put him on steroids, excessive thirst and not being able to get up fast enough to go potty. Now he is on half a steroid a day for 10 days and doing better. So I am happy to know it is not his mind making him piddle everywhere it is the steroids.
I never did know that they causes excessive thirst. We let him have all the water he wants.
I could never deny him water.
Thanks for the info.

is there a special dish to make it a little harder for him to drink forcing him to take his time when he drinks??? I got a special food dish for Bella that has a cut out in the shape of a X. Since I have been using that she has slowed down her eating instead of wolfing it down. She now eats more ladylike 8O
There is a bowl that my friend bought and recommended to me.

I have not purchased it yet but have been thinking about it. We do have the anti-bloat bowl they make and are very happy with it. Right now we just regulate water pretty closely for the puppy so he doesn't drink too much too fast, but I could see us getting that bowl someday. Apparently you fill the floater with water to limit what they can get to. So the bowl can be full but they can't gulp as the floater will be in the way.

There are the only water bowls I'll use now: Road Refresher

They don't gulp and they don't make a mess. Very little water gets on their beards. It makes an incredible difference.
Jill, how heavy are those bowls? I think they'd be perfect for my cats, who seem to love to move around and then ultimately tip over their water bowls. Or get kitty litter or food in the bowl somehow...

I WISH I could use something like this! Our water and food bowls MUST be raised. If they're not Wendel flings the food bowl across the kitchen floor with his nose while he's burying it. Asterisk likes to dip her front feet into the water bowls, so that's out too :(
You can velcro them down-- there's actually velcro on the bowl so we have a little rug with a rubber back that sits on the tile floor so it doesn't slide. Plus, they really don't spill if they flip. The opening isn't that big to step in. She might be able to get one paw in but definitely not both. Bear sometimes uses the bowls as pillows and his cords fall into the opening but even then it isn't bad because very little water sits on the top layer. Nothing compared to when we had open water bowls.
I've got the road refresher too.
Its fantastic, slows them down, stops Tiggy getting her ears wet, cuts down on the trail of water as they walk away from the bowl and you can velcro it down.
Its quite heavy when full though so you might not need the velcro.
Its also a bit small for a sheepie's foot although I wouldnt put it past them.
I've never seen my cat drink out of it although he has his own water, I dont think he really likes dog slobber flavoring.
how much water does it hold??? Bella bounces and keeps tipping her water bowl over making a big puddle which she then insists on walking through.
I'm not sure maybe a litre or so.
You dont have to fill it right up either and its not that easy to tip over
