Boomer the sheppie wanna be

So i know Boomer isn't a sheepie but he likes to pretend he is!!! He is a great Pyr mix. We had to go out of town for a week and i left him with my sister. I guess she misunderstood the whole brushing every other day thing b/c he is offcially a mess

Considering it is not even May and we have hot the 90's, HUGE flea problem, the fact that his coat is blowing or however tense that needs to be sheepie or not, and the state my sister left him in we are getting him groomed for the 1st time Sunday!!!! Sister did let some mats develop behind his ears and collar, granted this is a problem area in general on Great Pry's but    his rump is also pretty bad as it seems to collect every stray leaf and twig in our yard.

The groomer is concerend that (she hasn't physically seen him) since his neck has two mats on it and his rump maybe matted underneath that they will have to shave him down. Our backyard is 90% shaded, the unshaded area is where they go potty, if we have to leave him outside for a couple of ours would we have to put sun block on him?

I don't really want him shaved down all the way so i am asking that tehy try to keep at least 2-3 inches on him.

i s there a way to like trim the tail b/c it is very long and like to collect EVERYTHING. I don't even care if it looks dorky. I my have some pics in my camera thingy. I haven't updated in oh about a year but i will do after we get him groomed.

Sorry about the longness, my husband just doesn't understand my concerms overing doing this!!

If he has 2-3 in of hair after his shave, he won't need sunscreen. But if he's matted, he likely won't have that much hair left. In order to leave that much hair on him, you have to brush the mats out.

What I do is cut down to the length I want with either scissors or skimming the clipper. Then there's slightly less hair to brush through. Problem is you cannot cut into a mat. What I mean is, say you have three inches from the skin to the tip of the hair. Ususally the mat forms nearest the skin, so maybe the first 2 in are mat and the other inch at the tip is perfectly fine. In order to give you 1 1/2 in of hair left on after the hair cut, I would take off the inch of hair that's not matted, then spend hours probably dematting through the other two inches, then I could trim down to the final length. Or, I could spend 30 min and shave to the skin. I don't mean to sound harsh or anything, but that's the truth. Pyrenees have a different type of coat from OES and the brushing/dematting process is a bit different.

The decision is between you and your groomer.

Certainly you can trim the tail. It should be hand scissored to be in proportion to the body. You don't want to shave it if you don't have to, but you don't want him to have really short hair and a bush coming off his bum.
Thanks!!! I actually found a groomer that has worked with several Pry's and she came over and too0l a look at him yesterday. I feel a lot more comfortable with her and she is doing it for less :> We talked about all my fears and how she would address them so we are gonna go through with this early next week.
