Our 1st UKC show

We went to our 1st UKC show in Minneapolis this weekend. It was quite the time!
Lots and lots of firsts for all of us....

My neighbor and friend who has TFT's (toy fox terriers) has been after us to enter Chewie in a UKC show. She has nationally ranked dogs, both in UKC and AKC. I had the weekend off, and Chewie is grown back enough to start to look like an OES should, so we entered.

First, it was the maiden voyage in her new RV. First time out of the yard since she got it in Decmber. She had a HUGE 5th wheel that she pulled with her big diesel, but she decided to downsize. .... a little! It still is big, but very nice. We got to learn where all the guages, knobs, settings are, how to work all the stuff, like water, pumps, generator, slides and all. It went well, no disasters. Even did the dump of the tanks on the way home!

It was Breanna's 1st show too - as a competitor. UKC has classes for kids younger than AKC in Jr's, so she showed Chewie. They were so cute together. I got not so hot pictures, but you can get the idea. They were from Saturday. I need to get Leanne's camera and get the Sunday pictures. Sunday she had on this adorable pink polka dot dress... And I think the pictures turned out better.

Not bad for a 5 year old, showing a just-2 year old OES that outweighs her by 30 pounds!

She got a blue ribbon each day and was so happy!

UKC is all about the dog - not the grooming. They need to be clean and groomed properly, but they allow NO artificial products. It the judge feels gel, spray or other stuff, they can kick you out! This is obviously more of a challenge with dogs that have coat.....
Thankfully Chewie has good texture, not soft shiny hair. The biggest challenge is doing the head coat with no product whatsoever. 8O

UKC has 2 shows each day, so 4 shows in a weekend. The second show start is staggered - it starts 1 hour after the 1st. So, you pretty much go from one ring, into the next a bit later.
Each judge judges every dog entered in their show, from the classes all the way to best in show. The group order is listed outside the ring, and the breeds are all judged, just like AKC. Then after all the breeds in the group are done, the breed winners go in for group. This proceeds until all the dogs are judged. Then, the group winners all come back in for BIS.

On Saturday LeAnne showed Chewie. He was the only OES, so proceeded to group. He got a group 3 and a group 4!!! We were so pleased. Saturday he was a bit rusty - as he hadn't been in the breed ring since Nationals last September.
Also, the judges are real big on self stacking - they actually instructed you to self stack and not touch your dog. This is the norm for lots of breeds, but not usually an OES thing. (You know, your dog actually needs to be able to SEE you to self stack... , and add the fact that you can't use any product 8O - you get the idea!)

He looked even better on Sunday. We had just started to rip and shape him before Saturday, but we did more (mostly LeAnne) before ring time Sunday and he really looked a LOT better.
Those pictures are on LeAnne's camera, so I will have to add them later.

But - the better news can come now. :D
Sunday LeAnne showed him in show 1, and got a Group1!!!
We decided I should give it a whirl in show 2, as she is getting Martha soon (this was before we got the call she finished  ), so I took him in for breed. We were waiting outside the ring to go back in for group, and we got the call from show 1 that they were ready for BIS. LeAnne was feeding Will, so I ran over and went in the BIS show ring instead with Chewie. We took Best in Show!!!! :go: What a shock....our 1st UKC show.

Then we went back to show 2, and got a Group 2. Almost anticlimatic after the big win, but still super. :D :D

And, it was baby Will's 1st show (well, outside of LeAnne, anyway!) and he did great. He is 4 weeks old now. 2 days of shows, stayed overnight 2 nights in the RV. What a little dog show baby.
Grooming tables are multipurpose....

All in all, a wonderful weekend. :D :D

I'm pretty sure I've seen that armset before <snicker>

She looks adorable. Does this mean Will will be showing Martha in Jr Showmanship? How old does he need to be?

Great that you've started socializing him early. I see you understand the importance of getting him used to the grooming table early

Great job all around. :D

Kristine
great job!!

UKC doesn't focus on FooFoo - hmmmm...............

Actually, Bre thinks Martha is going to be her favorite - she can't wait. Chewie ranks a poor 2nd.....
At the risk of sounding stupid...what does UKC stand for...specifically the U.

Until Dawn gets back on and adds more, it's the United Kennel Club. You can read more about it at http://www.ukcdogs.com/WebSite.nsf/WebPages/Home

They have their own agility and obedience programs, and other activities as well. I have friends who have done some of the performance stuff and know at least one OES person who, though she shows her dogs in AKC, likes to show them in the UKC breed ring now and then for fun because it's more relaxed: smaller shows, I don't think they allow professional handlers, though I could be wrong on that count, good practice for a young dog, that kind of thing.

Kristine
congratulations to All :D
Wow, what a great weekend! Congrats to everyone. :D :clappurple: :cheer:
I smile every time I see Breanna! How exciting for her.

Look at Will's hair! We're so jealous. Ours won't have any until he's TWO.

Leanne looks great for just having a kiddo.

Congrats!!!!!

How is it that I just had a hunch Kristine meant me and then Dawn actually posts a picture as proof... You are lucky I am used to all of you picking on me all the time! TOO funny
Seeing you and Breanna are about the same height... :sidestep:

it makes sense you both need that right arm out there for balance!!!
WOW!

I think those are fighting words!

P.S. I just went back and looked at some pics and videos thinking I did the offset/balance arm but nope, not part of that club!!
I'm staying out of the fray but do want to say those pictures (even blurred) are PRICELESS!!!

Great job all (even the baby!!). :clappurple:

Well now I will DEFINITELY need that right arm out to balance the wieght on my left with my new bling:D

I once had a non-dog show friend of mine come to a specialty. After which she informed me that I show like the Shih Tzu Man on Best In Show...I was insulted :x ...... until I was presented with video and then I realized it was true...minus the sashaying of course

PS- MIDGETS RULE!!!!! :rimshot:

Too bad Breanna and I are some of the most fun midgets to kick it with

Although I am betting Breanna may grow out of this phase, I on the other hand....

Just let me know if you want handling lessons Mandy I'd be happy to teach you the proper usage of the right arm  It may look as though it is there for balance however I usually use it to smack the peanut gallery (Kristine, Gale, Marnie, Dawn, Leanne....the list is endless) who love to pick on me relentlessly ring side...that and take candid shots of me flashing innocent bystanders at outdoor shows.
Apparently the midwest is much cooler than the east coast! I need to come hang out with you guys!

I know that at one point I did show with the right arm out. I think the thing that broke me of it was Susanne telling me to knock it off because I looked like Jere. (You know who I mean!) Yup, that did it!! 8O

I think you little fellas do the right arm thing to make yourselves look bigger, like the lizards with the hoods!
(Sorry, it just came to me and it was too good to let go!)
