EARTHQUAKE!!!!!! (5.4)

My daughter just call me (she lives in Illinois, right outside St. Louis)...it's about 6AM....

St.Louis just had a 5.4 mag EARTHQUAKE!!!!!! :excited: :excited: :excited: (the emoticon shows fear not excitment....)

I was in a dead sleep and I felt our bed shake..we just got this bed frame about 3 years ago and it is massive and heavy but I was in such a sleepy haze, I thought one of the dogs were leaning on the bed scatching behind their ear shaking the bed....

Bridges have been affected. A lady's house split in half. No damage around me as I can tell...yet...

Last earthquake here was 1986~~~Certainly not something we are used to feeling

Who elso felt it????

I'm glad you're fine and have electricity and internet access, apparently!
  ----Yes...thank goodness---NO INJURIES anywhere--they just announced it...whew!!!! They are not expecting any aftershocks either.
I didn't feel anything myself, but Barney came in the BR about that time which he never does. He usually sleeps in the kitchen. He knew something weird was going on.
Usually I am up by 5:30 but this morning I was still sleeping.
I do know that it was felt here though (east of Indianapolis).

Years ago when we got a new insurance agent, he laughed because we carried earthquake insurance. Said we were the only people he knows of who has it. We added it to our policy after the quake in 86. Our house is almost 200 years old. It is two stories and solid brick, even the interior walls. It is much more vunerable to an aftershock then a frame constructed house. Hope it is something we never need, but nice to know it's there just in case.
May I ask about how much does an eathquake rider (policy?) cost?
Sorry I can't tell you. It has been so long since we added it. I looked on my statement but it does not list the cost individually.
I do remember that it was not very much. I think it cost more to add a rider for jewelry and electronic equipment then the quake insurance.
Ron---

FYI...just heard on the news, in theSt. Louis area earthquake insurance is rated second highest----topped only by California since we are on the New Madris fault.

We have the coverage, but to be honest I have no idea how much we pay since it is packaged with our homeowners.

(We also have flood insurance.)
I'm outside Chicago and sometime this morning I woke up and felt the bed vibrating. I'm like WTH is this???? It must have been the earthquake.
Wow!! I am glad to hear all of you are ok!!!
Ronnie did feel it here this morning.
Yesterday morning, just after midnight, there was a report of an explosive sound maybe 50 miles north of Indianapolis. People thought a building blew up or a plane had crashed. They searched the county and have found nothing to explain the event. I am wondering if it had anything to do with todays quake.
Hi,

I am interested to hear if the dogs acted "weird".

We had a very minor quake many years ago in CT and I didn't feel anything, but heard a strange low rumble. The dogs made the most eerie sounds.

Hope every one is OK.

ooooh, earthquake! how exciting! 5.4 is a nice one, not too big to be scary, but definitely big enough to be felt! 8)

I've always wondered about that area and their buildings. I remember from school them saying there was a HUGE quake that shifted the course of the Mississippi River, and I know in California they have all sorts of earthquake-specific building guidelines and retrofitting, but I wonder if they have that same level out there...

Glad no one was hurt.
We even rattled a bit in Michigan.
oooh, the New Madrid fault is really dangerous! Wasn't it Jefferson who heard church bells in VA ring from the quake in the 19th century? We think of California and The Big One.........New Madrid's potential for death and damage is far greater.

YIPES!

maybe the newer buildings...but mostly....NO.. A bridge (overpass) right by my house has was closed down due to this mornings earthquake damage so they can make sure it is still safe.. the bridge was built in the 40's.
My sister and BIL lives in Washington, MO (about 60 miles south west of STL), and they woke up this morning to the rumbling. Thankfully no one got hurt!
Scary! There were shocks here in Cincinnati. My husband and I slept through them. My 18 year old son was awakened. He thought that the guys who had power washed our deck were back so he jumped up to look out the window. Phoebe did not wake us up so I don't know what she did.
My family is in Evansville, IN about 50-70 miles from the epicenter. They are expecting aftershocks today.
It didn't wake me up, but my sister said she felt something. Izzie was more restless in bed last night than she usually is, but not enough to make me think something was up before we heard about the quake.
Actually the quake was in Mr. Vernon, Il. We didn't feel it up here...or maybe we just slept through it. However, our cats were meowing their heads off around then, and we just thought they were crazy cats.

My daughter goes to school about 100 miles from there. I'll have to ask her if she felt it, but she was probably asleep!

Glad everyone and everything is ok!
Hmmm...on the news they said it was centered in Louisville, KY but was felt much further away. :?

Glad everyone is safe! :phew:
Were there two? I watched the news all morning, and they said the Illinois location. They were even talking to people there, and of course in Chicago. Here, from the Chicago Tribune:

Tremors from a moderate earthquake centered in southeast Illinois rattled people awake across the Chicago area Friday morning, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or significant damage, authorities said.

The earthquake, which measured 5.2 on the Richter Scale, struck at 4:36 a.m. near the town of West Salem, Ill., about 60 miles northwest of Evansville, Ind., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. An initial estimate of the magnitude put it at 5.4, which would have matched the strongest earthquake recorded in the region.
I must have felt it too....though I didn't realize until I heard the news! I woke up about that time and my first thought was "OH NO! Phoebe (the cat) is having another seizure". 8O She has had seizures under our bed before and we've woken up to the bed shaking. She hasn't had one since we put her on medication. I thought maybe she had a relapse. I got out of bed, realized it wasn't her, checked on my daughter and went back to sleep without giving it another thought. I am soooo not a morning person!!

As I'm typing this my husband just called to say his whole building at work is shaking. Must be an aftershock!!
We supposedly felt it here in the Milwaukee area too, but I sleep so heavily it would take more than a few seconds of rattling to wake me. I did wake up at my usual 5 am and noticed I had more dogs than usual on the bed with me, but who knows? If anything my money would be on my cat for having the slightest clue something might be going on. He was still in hiding when I left for work which is very rare as he's usually right there to remind me felines should be fed before canines...

It's the only way I noticed. Bear let out a long bark and Clyde licked me to wake me up. I'd have slept through it otherwise.
How long did it last?

The only big one I have been through was a 5.6, but it lasted over 30 seconds.... which was long enough to really scare me.

The past two days I have seen reports that we have had 3.4 and 3.2, but I have not felt anything. Usually you don't feel the small ones.

I did however feel a 3.1 when I was on a trip to CA when I was still living in NY. I thought my sister had come into the bedroom and kicked the bed. I sat up and said Why the heck would you do that? But there was nobody there. I later found out on the new that night that there had been one.

My dogs never act any different.

I'm glad everyone is safe!!
I didn't feel anything. The Ambien (and my cold) must really knock me out.
I am sorry that anyone was frightened by it. :( But here if anyone admitted that they even felt one that small they would be laughed at. It is not nessarily the magnatude of the quake that causes the damage. More often it is the length of the quake. Laurel can tell you that I can be in a store shopping with lights swinging and things falling, and I don't notice. I do not know if it is from be in so many, or the fact that I am a bit vague. probably the later.
i felt the one in Feb. 1985.....got home from school..was watching GH and the fireplace started to 'breathe'...thought the house was possesed, grabbed the dog and ran out into the street.....(simultaniously, lisa was at work and fell off of her stool(she thought she got dizzy from her hangover)....

but i have to say the house LOOKED like it was breathing.....i stopped horror movies after that!!!
I was just getting ready to get into bed when the wall behind me sounded as if a huge wind gust was about to blow it in. The windows were shaking, as well as the glass in our gun cabinet. I thought for sure we'd had it, but - WTH is IT!!!

My legs were shaking, but I thought that was from fear. The sound of the shaking glass made it sound like it was too late to react, so I stood there at first not knowing whether to duck or run..........

My husband was laying on the couch and said he felt something, but at first he thought it had something to do with the rod in his back. But as it became more powerful he seen lamps and things start wobbling in the living room and knew exactly what it was.

He then called my name and I quickly joined him, scared sh....less! I then went outside and even in the dark I could see my shrubs were still shaking. Lights were coming on everywhere around us, and others were also coming outside.

When I went back in my hubby told me that his African Grey parrot was injured. He'd gotten so scared that as he fluttered his wings, he lost 14 large feathers. He has only 2 of his pretty red tail feathers left. He seems to be fine now.

After a quick check of the house at daylight I found a little damage. My kitchen door was cracked. The space between some of the blocks on the basement wall have horizontal cracks between them. One block outside has moved slightly forward away from the others, and another one out front has a diagonal crack. I still need to do more checking, but thank God we didn't suffer any damage or loss of life that the 'big' ones produce.

We live east of Brazil, Indiana. I hear people talk about that New Madrid fault line occassionly (I think thats the right name), but now that I've actually felt and heard its rumbling twice in the last several years, I know a sleeping giant is getting restless.
Aww...you guys haven't felt anything. I have lived in California since 1958. I have lived through larger than 7.0 quakes.

Just teasing, it is always scary and exciting in a way. I live blocks from the San Andreas faultline. We don't have earthquake insurance because it costs at least 3 times as much as my homeowners insurance. I just won't live in a 2 story house here.

Glad everyone is ok.
Hubby and I were staying at a new Hotel in St. Charles. We were on the 15th floor.

I was half asleep but felt it. Hubby woke up and said 'We've got vibrating beds here! COOL!"

I said, :x "For Heavens sake Joe!! It is the couple next door having a good time!!!" (still half asleep, thinking we were in a cheap motel or something.)

Well, then the phone rang 15 min. later....a friend of mine filled us in on it. LOL

I did feel the aftershock too and that was enough for me....we left, it was check out time anyway.
