Did I miss something?

It was a beautiful day yesterday and I took the dogs to the dogpark. We went for a nice long walk and then to the area where all the dogs and their people gather. Both dogs had fun and drank tons of water which is normal because of all the running. It seemed that Gar drank too fast because he started coughing, coughing, aacckk. He did this a few times and after a while we left and came home. Again he did this a few times at home, I didn't think too much of it until I noticed he was acting different. Normally he would fall asleep after an afternoon like he had but he wouldn't lay down, just sat and looked like he couldn't keep his eyes open. Randy made hamburgers for supper and he perked a little but later that night I noticed that he was panting alot and doing the cough, cough, aacckk. We went to bed and he to his crate(door open) and he woke me up with the coughing and aacckking. He was also panting alot and I turned up the ceiling fan a notch. I got up and sat with him for awhile and he didn't seem in distress but now I wonder if I missed something. Today he is back to his normal dopey self after I spent the day exhausted and worrying about him.

Definition of aacckk is after coughing the noise they make trying to bring something up.

Maybe he is just too hot. I just had Nigel clipped because he was keeping me up at night with the panting...and he had a bad case of the runs. The sudden heat here seems to be hard on him. Now it's supposed to cool down again.

Mind you, I am there with the big "M" and need Ambien to sleep anyway.
The cough and 'acckking" sound like kennel cough, or one of the various similar respiratory bugs.
Two of mine just went through that about 3 weeks ago. Trip to the vet for the 1st one, on ABX. After about 5 days, when #2 started coughing, got ABX for him. All is well, as none of the rest caught it. :D

Or maybe he just had a litlle irritation, seeing you say it is gone now.

Just my 1st thought with your description. The kennel cough "cough" typically is followed by a gagging sound, like they have something caught in their mouth or throat.
Do you have pollen issues where you are? Could be pollen in the water he drank if it had been sitting outdoors for a while. Everything is yellow here if it's outside for any time at all.
Was it hot? Sounds like heat exhaustion, he drank too much too fast and irritated his throat hense the "aacking". Tasker does that when he drinks to fast. Have you ever taken a big gulp of liquid and had it make your throat spasm, I think it's the same thing
