Max our new dog

Last Aug, my youngest son moved out with some friends to this old ramshackle house in the burbs where we live. This particular part of the city is undergoing major rejuvenation and currently there are 7 highrises being built in that area.

One night my son called me and said he had the scare of his life. A bush in the woods behind his house started moving and out came this "wolf". Okay he was joking about the "wolf" but the dog was large and not approachable. It was obvious he had been living out under the bush for some time.

I have been feeding this boy since Aug, dropping off bags of food and treats since that time. Posted flyers and informed the SPCA but no owner could be found. Eventually he always approached and leaned his body against me every time he saw me.

I was so heartsick about this dog especially in the cold winter, he had burrowed and made himself a snow shelter underneath that bush. If you called his name "Max" the huge snow pile would move and out came this old dog. My son built a shelter with blankets under his porch and eventually the old guy started approaching the house more often. Eventually he was able to get him into the house occasionally. However, Max probably had never been in a house and trashed the place in his visits. Ripped garbage, counter surfed ect. Still, my son was able to get him in the house most nights.

Then my son recieved notice the house was being torn down. What to do? I couldn't bring him home with my three existing boys. An big old dog like that would have no chance at my high kill shelter and the senior dog rescue was full. I spent many sleepless nights wondering what to do?

Yesterday, with only 2 weeks left in that house - my son managed to get Max into the house during the day. My sister who lives 75 miles away and has another old dog nobody wanted as well as her menagerie of unwanted cats drove as fast as she could. She managed to get him into her car and drove home.

Yeah!!! Max is saved! It's going to be a long road ahead for all of us but now he's got a forever home.

Apparently, the saintliness is in the family.
Marianne, you should be very proud of your son that you have thought him compasion. You and your sister are my heroes.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the comments but guess we'll see how it works out as many rescues of this type have issues that need months of work to deal with.

We can't save them all but there is one more that I would love to help. An old chained dog (2 1/2) years I've driven past on my way to work. Out in the elements snow and hot sun and never let off the chain. The chain extends to a carport -thus his "shelter". I've reported it numerous times but animal control can not remove him as the owners provide food and water. The laws in our area state if they have food/shelter and water they can't be seized. The laws are changing however and I'm hoping many of the rescues I've contacted will purchase the dog from the owner if necessary. I am unable to bring him here as again I have my 3 so while my sister took Max , I also worry about this other dog as well.

Today broke my heart..his head was downcast, shoulders hunched and appeared to be in pain from his hips. While I never want Ole Blue to pass away ..I've often said I will console myself as with his passing it will allow room to help another..but in this boys case it may be too late. That sadly is the reality of rescue and that wounds the soul. I'm happy for the ones we save ..but heartbreaking to walk away from the others.

Ok Marianne your sister must be as lovely as you. Thanks for saving Max, your tale made me cry. But I told myself it turned out Ok. Then you said about the other chained one....hopefully some day soon his life will be easier.
