What is a good breeding age for dogs?

I have a couple of dogs and would like to know at what age can I breed them? What would you consider the youngest age a male can breed?

You have come to the right place to get helpful advice on breeding! We have many experienced breeders (I am not one) who can give you invaluable help.

I am sure that one of the first things they will suggest is that you find a mentor, someone who will help you learn the ropes as you start the process of showing your dogs to prove that first and foremost they SHOULD be bred.

AKC guidelines state that breeding should be done to "improve" the breed and you can only do that by starting the process through showing your pups and then moving on to genetic testing to further insure that the pups you are producing are indeed quality pups.

You have alot of hard work and an exciting adventure ahead of you before you even consider breeding your dogs. Welcome to the forum. You will find boatloads of valuable advice and information here, just read away.

A male should be bred once all the genetic testing has been done to clear him of known genetic defaults that he can pass on to puppies. That is not before 2 years of age.

He also should have his championship status, which he can get if shown young enough and wins, at under a year old.

This is for the male. The female is the same thing.

Well said Ginny!

The goal in breeding is to improve the breed, not produce inferior pups that will damage the gene pool for many generations. Sheepdogs are prone to several major medical problems......problems carried from generation to generation by poor breeding.

You have some cuties there, but looks aren't everything.
