Has anyone heard of the DASH Diet?

I was reading Prevention Mag a few weeks ago and they mention a program called DASH, I think its from Kaiser Hospital Foundation. It is supposed to get your BP down and some of your other important numbers.

I have ordered the book and it should have been here, but Dasiy decided to get aquainted with the mail man and he has put a black mark on our house, so we are not getting mail delivery. I had to go this morning and plead Mia Culpa and sign a waiver about the dogs...

Back to my question, has anyone heard anything about this program? I'm looking at some of the recipies from the Mayo Clinic for this program and it sounds pretty doable. I would love to get my BP in control so I didn't have to take meds and if I lost weight in the process, it would be good with me too....

Sorry no - but fess up about the mailman
Yes, actually it's been around for awhile. It is high in grains fruits and VERY in vegies, low in fats, sweets, meats, nuts and dairy products. It is a very sensible diet and recommended by the AHA.

It isn't a rapid weight loss diet but a healthy eating plan.
Yes, my Mom was on it and it was effective in bringing
her slight BP under control.

Here is a site I had bookmarked -hope this is helpful

You still get home delivery????????????????
Good to know about the BP. I'm looking at this for a a life style change and not for a quick fix diet to lose some weight. I'm in it for the long haul. I want to go into my sr years as a healthy person doing the right things regarding exercise and food choices...

Regarding the mail man:    I do get home delivery again, but I had to sign an agreement that if it happens three times, I will have to get a PO Box for my mail.... so one down, two times to go... 8)
Had blood work done this morning. The doc called to tell me that I need to work on it a little harder. My Tryglycerides (sp?) were high, I wonder if that was all the tootsie rolls I have each afternoon... probably. My Potasium (sp? again) was too low, lower than low. I hate bananas darn, but I will eat them every day to get my numbers in line. I will give up the sugar each afternoon and get with the program. No wonder I haven't lost any weight, darn those tootsie rolls.
Hmmmmmmmm, don't think tootsie rolls are considered diet food
You should be having, according to recently published American Heart Association guidelines, 5 to 7 grams of fish oil twice a day to reduce your triglycerides.

Now, that's a ton of fish oil. So might I recommend in addition to cutting down on the sweets that you add 2 grams of fish oil twice a day, then see how your numbers are?

I don't have time to go into why the AHA has recommended this but it is recommending 1 to 2 grams of fish oil per day, preferred source is salmon, fish oil capsules are acceptable.

The quantity may be taken in weekly boluses or anytime in a given week, it is not necessary to spread it out. 1 6oz. portion of salmon per week is roughly equivalent to 1 gram of fish oil capsules per day for 7 days, so you can reduce your daily pill popping by that amount for each 6 oz portion of salmon you consume per week. :D

I don't like the world you live in.
I think I was having a few tootsie rolls cause I think that since I was doing so "good" on other stuff, that I thought I deserved them... Well, I guess will have to give them up.

Ron thanks for the omega 3 heads up. I eat fish (salmon yummo) at least once per week, but will think about the supplement too. I'm determined to get my numbers in line and in the process get some weight off.

I also need all the encouragement I can get, so thanks everyone for the help and tips... Keep them coming!

You can do it, Leslie!! Just keep up the good work. You'll get those numbers in line.
You can do it! It's definitely hard at times to keep on eating right, but it's worth it.

And if you feel like you need something sweet, a small piece of dark chocolate is a good way to go. A little bit goes a long way, and the darker the better it is for you.
I was not one with the DASH this past weekend. Lee and I went to Reno for a bowling thing and I drank Dewars on the rocks alot and ate the finest filet mingon. But I'm back into being one with the DASH and back on my plan as of dinner last night. Fresh steamed veggies, chicken. today I had tuna on whole wheat, Sun Chips and diet cola.... I will be one with the DASH again! I ate only about 3/4 of the sandwich and half of the chips, tossed them away and moved on.... Oh I forgot, breakfast was a banana, yuck! but I have to eat them everyday to get my potasium up.

Back on the wagon again.... and you know, it's not really hard to get back on either. I was thinking about past diet blunders and so often you make a huge blunder and you then say the heck with it, right? but I had been planning for this "blunder" for over a month and it's over and I'm back with the program and have not had a tootsie roll either. So what is different? I think it's that I planned for it. I made reservations for dinner at a casino steak house for my husbands birthday, we celebrated and now we are done and back to reality.... But can it be that simple, plan for the mis-steps, know you are going to do it, and then be done with it? it seems a little too easy to me, but I'm back on the plan and doing fine.
That's actually a great approach to it, IMO, Leslie. You plan for it, know you're going to give yourself a break and indulge for a day or two, and then go back to eating right. :D
I'm getting a little frusterated with the DASH program. Not that I can't sick with it and all. I'm fine with the food and the fish and all that. I'm frusterated because I have not seen any thing move weight wise, in fact I feel fatter or rounder if that is possible. As I was contemplating this fact I was remembering my step daughter used to be this rather round looking young lady, she was over weight, but more she was roundish, bubble boobs, bubble butt if you get what I mean. Then after our grandson was born, she slimmed way down and has maintained it. I has asked her at the time what she was doing and she mentioned that her doctor had discovered that she was Insulin Resistant. I got to thinking about this and wondered if this is what I could have. So I did a little reading and I do believe that I have some very stong symptoms Insulin Resistance.

Has anyone here any experience with this?
