My dog Tulo is mouthy while playing with another poodle

he just gets better every day... only one bad habit has arisen... he loves to play each morning with a standard (female) poodle but lately has gotten the habit of opening his mouth around her neck as they race around... not agressively (i know he is just playing and possibly showing his dominance) but i think it annoys the other owner (for good reason) so i have had to forego the playtime and walk him in another area... any suggestions? i hate to see the playtime eliminated.

tulo's size is very unusual for a sheepie... everyone in the neighborhood (except one grouch) loves him and a few have even stopped their cars to come out and greet him... the biggest question i get about him is "what is he? and irish wolfhound?" i actually can see why they ask that as his legs are so long (i know this is supposed to be a flaw for oes but i really like his size)

i will work on pix soon.

If the poodle doesn't like it, she'll let Tulo know. If the owner doesn't like it,
find another playmate that will accept this behavior (as long as there's no
aggression) or an owner that will allow the DOG to tell Tulo that the behavior
isn't acceptable.

Great to hear he's settling in :D
Will watch for pics!
thanks...i felt the same way...apparantly the owner isnt that dog savvy but a very nice guy... and so is his dog...and tulo gets lots of exercise with her so i hate to see it end.
so glad he is doing so well.. i agree the poodle will let him know!
We got our Border Collie mix from the local humane society and took her to puppy classes. I was shocked how rough dogs can play... we only ever had one dog at a time and I was over protective. And when one of the little neutered dogs tried to hump her, OMG 8O

I quickly learned it's all just dog behavior and you have to match dogs that play alike.
we have that issue at dog park. Morgan gets sheepie on a labradoodle and the stage mother freaks out everytime. I usually walk away muttering its a @&^%$ dog for G@(&*^$ sake!

I have two they mouth at each other all the time and if the dog park peole saw them paly together they would probably have a stroke!
Me too, Kerry. If most of the people at the dog park saw my two playing at home together, they'd have a fit.

Jaci - I LOVE the hat on the girl in your avatar!! I've been looking for a really cute one ever since Genevieve's birthday last October. Do you mind if I ask where you found it?
I think that one came from Meijers-
http://www.meijer.com
But from the store, not online.

My poor girls are forever getting hats plopped on
their heads. I'm probably going to be reported
If he's mouthing while running, its probably his herding instinct.

If its not acceptable TO YOU, you have to let him know. Believe me, if he's pissing off Frenchie...she'll let him know!

We don't have Meijers around here. :( Is it a people hat or a doggie hat? Perhaps I could find a people hat and modify it. I liked this one, but I didn't think it was quiet big enough for her head.

It was a little girl's hat that was out a Easter time.
Kaytee's only about 50 pounds so she's easier to fit.
I had one for Emma a few years ago that one was a
little small- http://oesusa.com/Emma3May2005.jpg

Glad to see I'm not the only one afflicted with this hats-on-sheepies condition.
I love the picture! :D I'd look for people hats... maybe you can sneak your
baby into the store so she can try them on! 8)
well, i spoke to the poodles owner about your suggestions that it is just dog play... he said "yeah, i know. my dog does it to some other dogs".

he wasnt worried about it so all is good.

ps. it also got my wife off my back who was demanding i take him to dog school for it. i have nothing against dog school but this dog doesnt need it. he is very obedient, gentle, and loving.

pps . thanks all.

I haven't met a sheepie yet who doesn't need training - with someone else to make sure we aren't falling for the cute head turn, the big eyes - the oh aren't I cute expressions......
well, i think he has already been trained by the previous owner...
he sits, shakes with either hand on command, lies down, stays and comes.

he stays away from our food while we eat and goes to his bed on command.

i dont need a circus dog so good enuf for me is all that matters.
That is great news about the poodle owner - it so nice when other dog owners are realistic about how dogs play, and the different styles of different breeds.

Ditto the above, plus you and your dog are missing fun, bonding time and getting out of the at-home rut. Classes also reinforce that you are the leader of your team, in a fun, enjoyable way. Socialization in multiple settings can head off lots of undesirable behaviors that tend to crop up down the road!

Mine don't have issues either - we go to class to make sure it stays that way.
I can relate to the stroke comment if others saw my two "play". I'm still trying to break Gar from grabbing Simon by the neck and dragging him around. Simon doesn't seem to mind(much) but now he has a lovely brown stain(picture sheepie beard) around his neck.
