Car harnesses for dogs

We bought a car harness which attaches to the seatbelt for Ru, he seems to enjoy travelling like this much better than his crate. He is getting a bit big for his crate now, he can't stand up in it so I can't use it for work as I leave him for 2 hours at one point of the week. Now he enjoys looking out the window and feels the breeze on his face (which seems to make him dribble lol) I think he is much happier like this. BUT I have to leave him in the car usually for 1 hour at a time, so my worries are that he might start barking at passers by which he couldn't see before, and that passers-by can now see him, making him a target for theft :( Also, I'm a bit worried he may get tangled up in the harness somehow? Probably me being paranoid.

Does anyone leave their dog in the harness unattended? He can stand up & lie down easily and I always leave the window open even in the cold weather, when it gets warm I will leave him at home.

My first thought was the car overheating, but you say you leave him at home when it's warm. I know I'd still worry, even in the dead of winter, but then, I'm paranoid.

I'd worry about theft, for certain, or malicious people teasing or harming my dog if left unattended with a window open. Also, some of the nicest dogs can get aggressive when left in a locked vehicle, as I see frequently in the grocery store parking lot. Those would be MY worries, but I obviously don't know your dog.

The harness sounds like it might be a good idea. I'm really interested in learning more about them. We transport our 3 in our van without crates but the distance is really short--few miles, max. Mostly because if we added crates, we'd have to take a second vehicle or leave people behind.
Oscar has traveled in a car harness since he was a puppy, and it certainly calms him down for the ride. However, I would not leave him in the harness unattended, for the reasons listed already. In addition, he could get tangled in it if stressed out, or chew through it (as my friend's GSD did out of anxiety of being left in the car). I think there might have even been a warning label on the harness I bought that stated that animals should not be left in them unattended.

And I may be a protective sheepie mommy, but I never leave Oscar in the car alone, ever. There are just too many things that could happen, not least of all is him getting taken.

Dutch has two different car harness , which are fine but she has learned how to release the seat belt so they are not much use  . I shouldn't be suprised because I also have a hands free gate and she does her best to open it by pounching on the pedal , so far she hasn't been able to pounch hard enough but I'm sure the day is coming :lmt: she does lead me a merry old chase
Hmm she sounds too clever, I hadn't thought of that! I'm only working one day a week and he's been coming with me every week since we got him at 8 weeks old, so he is used to being left in the car, but then I understand that could change at any time, especially with changing from crate to harness. The areas I work in are very quiet, often he will be on the drive of my customers, so not many people passing but a few all the same.

I think I will re-work it somehow. I could keep him in the harness while I'm driving and get a barrier so he will stay in the boot (it's large enough 4x4) while I'm cleaning. That will prob be the best way :lmt:
I would very much like to see a photo of someone's sheepie riding in the car with the harness on. :? I'm having a hard time picturing how that works with big dogs. In the photos, they only ever show small dogs in them. Do they have to sit up the whole time? :?

Mine generally ride something like this:

I keep their gentle leaders and a leash on them while they're in the car, though, in case I need to secure them. :?

I use harnesses in the jeep in preperation for when the top comes off this summer. They can lay down and move around and get out of the harness  :?
I don't have any pics, but Oscar can move around, lay down, etc., with the harness on. Because the back of the harness attaches around the locked seat belt, the harness only comes into play when the car reacts to a sudden stop.

There are a couple of ways to secure the dog. First, you can put the harness on, get the dog into the car, and then put the seat belt through the slot provided on the harness and lock it into place. If you have touchy seat belts that lock at the slightest acceleration, this can be a bit restrictive for the dog. (My hubby's truck is like this, so, as a passenger, I am constantly having to undo the belt to loosen it.)

I have a Batzi belt (lengthener) for Oscar, which is a small lead with clips at both ends, so here is what I do. I lock the seatbelt into the holder, like someone is in that seat. (Since no one ever rides in the back of my car but Oscar, my seat belts in back are permanently locked into place.) I put the harness on Oscar, get him into the backseat and then take the Batzi belt, clip one end on the ring of the harness, loop it around the seatbelt, and clip the other side onto the same ring. Since the seat belt is locked, it will stop Oscar from moving during a sudden stop, but allows him to lay down and generally move around.

When we drive to Florida, we are in the car for 22 hours or so, and he seems to prefer the comfort of the harness.

Ifyou have to leave Ru in the car could he no be out of his harness? Put it back on once you start moving again???

You can get grates to go in the windows so you can leave them open but he won't be able to get out, so he won't get hot.
I don't like the thought of him jumping around inside the car. I have all my cleaning stuff in there & am worried about him chewing stuff up (I only use home-made cleaning agents from essential oils but even so, I don't want him getting into any of it) also he loves to chew my vacuum which I don't take into every house. I'm thinking it's going to be too hot to take him soon anyway
