Dairy food causing diahrrhea with blood?

My Loki Bear gave us all a scare yesterday. I've been giving him a bit of cottage cheese (about 2 tablespoons) of cottage cheese with his breakfast, as well as giving it to Jack and baby Chrissie (my two sheepie wannabes  ). He absolutely INHALES it -- They all do. I'm also giving them Purina One with yogurt (Had a chow mix with arthritis and it was awful -- I'm also terrified of hip problems with Loki). Anyway, while I was at work yesterday my son called and said Loki had diahrrhea all over the house, and when he went to clean it up he found some blood in it! I wasn't too concerned about the diahrrhea -- I figured oh well, too much cottage cheese, but the blood threw me for a loop. I called the vet and they said bland diet and bring in a stool sample, but the stinker hasn't pooped since the explosion yesterday. they didn't think it was obstruction or twisted colon. He was very snuggly all night (slept on the couch with me) and he ate like a horse this morning, wiggled around and sat for two hours while I brushed him out) so he seems fine, but I'm still worried about the blood. I'm thinking maybe he had been a bit constipated and that was the reason for the blood, but not sure. It could also be lactose intolerance.........? When I finally pinned my son down he said the blood spot was about the size of a half dollar and not black or sticky, bright red. Loki's been gaining weight beautifully (Vet says he's perfect at 90 pounds) and he had a lingering ear/surgery incision infection that he just finished antibiotics for 3 days ago. I think that's everything ....... any thoughts on this?

Yikes! I can't wait to see what the stool sample says at the vet's. I seriously doubt it is from the cottage cheese. I am glad he's been acting normal since then but I would keep a sharp eye out and get that sample to the vet as soon as you can. Good luck!!!
Poor Loki. Of course it's never fun to find blood in your puppy's stool, but it could easily be from his intestines straining to pass everything through. Oscar had blood in his stool when he had giardia.

Many dogs are intolerant to dairy, Oscar included, so I can't give him yogurt, but I do give him probiotics in powder form. It could be the dairy causing the diarrhea, and then the straining and inflammation from diarrhea causing the blood.

I wouldn't worry too much about the blood, especially since he's doing fine and the vet is checking into things.

Panda had a bad scare in November....it turns out she has colitis...it went from bad to worse very quickly. There are no more table scraps and tasty human treats for Panda....she sticks to her strick doggie diet..

She has not had even one loose stool since.....
Between the strain of the explosion, the antibiotics and possible colitis as Darcy mentioned, I think that might be the cause. I wouldn't discout some type of unwelcome guest in the gut hence the stool sample request.....like giardia or hookworms.....just mentioning the worse cases of foreign invaders.

Time for basic dog food to see if that solves or continues. Glad the pup is happy and bouncy......that's always a good sign
Thanks everyone for the input. The vet is checking for parasites (eeeuuwww) but that's fixable. He was wormed at the shelter but I suppose they could have missed something. Loki's so laid back it's hard to tell when he's not feeling good -- He'd rather lay on the couch with one his people that anything else. Since he was a rescue we're still getting to know him, but we have found that he isn't a high activity boy (except when he thinks he's going in the car -- Then he turns into a wiggle worm and prances around like a pony  ) Maybe 'worm' was a poor choice of words at the moment :?
So scary...sure you will get sorted out soon.
Since Summers upset she has only had wellbeloved turkey and rice kibble and her tinned from the vets which has almost finished now. No human food, but I put 4 bits of kibble on the table when we are eating. When we have finished yorkie gets our bits and Summer gets kibble. She hasn't noticed please don't anyone tell her...she thinks we are all eating wellbelove kibble.
for a week or so, id feed him either just rice or rice mixed with his food...

when panda was really bad, id make a whole box of instant rice and store in the frigde...when it was time for feeding i scooped out 1 cup of rice, added a little water and nuked it for about 40 sec..then mixed with her food....she thought she was getting gourmet....lol....silly girl...she now loves the microwave

The rice really helped bind her back up.
MO is still getting rice and turkey mixed with some dog food.

As for parasites, they could be really hard to find, hence several poop cultures.....whip worms for example are tough to find the first time. With the unknown history......yeah, she could have some alien in there causing the occassional bleed.

A couch snuggler isn't all bad  I'm surprised about the car, though. Harry won't go near the car maybe fearing we are taking him to the shelter. (we've had him 6 years??) As a pound pup one never knows their history. Glacier is the same way, "Oh, not another home.........."
The other two love the car, jump into it when I get home for the quick ride into the garage......silly kids.
Well, the rice did the trick! :D In fact, baby Chrissie has had some loose stools as well the last couple of days, so I've abandoned the cottage cheese for now (Jack has had no issues, but he has a cast iron stomach). Bummer, because they all loved it, but maybe I can re-introduce a bit at a time. In the meantime, they're all getting rice mixed with boiled hamburger and the rugs are staying clean :cheer:
